General :: Best Choice For Perfect Package Manager?
Apr 6, 2011
Anyone who has been in the world of Linux for more than a minute knows there is a good deal of choice when it comes to package manager. What is your package manager of choice and why? Why do you prefer to use RPM/dpkg/apt-get/yum/pacman/emerge/<insert random package manager here> over others out there?

The more I use openSUSE 11.2, the more I love it. Today, I tried another highly recommended KDE4 distro, and while it was nice, I immediately recognized that the excellent integration and refinements SUSE includes are very much to my liking. openSUSE is nearly perfect for me in every way -- except one. The package management continues to leave me baffled.I was hoping I would eventually learn to like it as much as Synaptic, aptitude/apt-get and the other tools on Debian-based distros. But the more I read, the more I am questioning whether I will ever like it.I'm now fairly convinced that Debian-based package management is the gold standard. (Of course, I'm just going on what I have read. I'm far from expert, and I'm hoping to get educated by posting questions like this one.)
But I doubt I will find a distro that is equal to openSUSE in every way except that it uses Debian-based package management. (I wish such a distro existed.)So, if I have to live with YaST, zypper, RPMs, etc., how can I learn to have the best experience with the least amount of investment? Low investment is important because if I really wanted to invest the time to become more of an expert in operating systems, package management, etc., I would probably just jump to Arch Linux and KDEmod and enjoy a rolling release. Or maybe Gentoo, etc. What I like about openSUSE is that it just works. It works out of the box. Except for package management.
deal with the initial setup of all the stuff on another (Debian-based) distro that isn't to my liking or that just doesn't work, and then thereafter enjoy that distro's good package management..have a great out of the box experience and the overall nicest initial OS experience I ever remember, but live every day with a package management system that isn't up to what I experienced under Ubuntu.Quote from the link above: It is almost unfair to include Red Hat in the same category as Suse because, frankly, Suse makes Red Hat look like geniuses. I don't know why a company which can create arguably the most attractive and professional looking distribution available in the Linux world has such a godawful package manager.

I want to use Gentoo's packages on Fedora. Is this possible?
EDIT: I meant that I want to use Gentoo's portage tree.
UPDATE: How about Ubuntu's packages on Fedora? Or Fedora's on Gentoo? Or any other distribution's packages/package manager on another?

What is your favorite package manager (or lack thereof) and why? I like APT and Pacman. Pacman is nice because it is so simple and sensible. APT is nice to all the GUI frontends and all of it's capabilities.

I just installed kubuntu and am having troubling finding the Adept Package Manager. All the tutorials I've found suggest that it should already be installed. I've looked in the Applications > System, searched for it and tried running it with the command line (kdesu adept). I've looked briefly online didn't see anything that jumped out as the right thing to download. Should it already be installed or where can I find it?

After a discussion we had at my LUG tonight, I wanted to find out where Ubuntu stored that choice so as to make it my default choice.I looked in /etc/gdm, /etc/X11, and in various hidden files and directories in my home directory but could not find a likely suspect for further interrogation.

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

I use ubuntu 9.10 karmic(x86). I was using a wifi network in my college, for which i used a proxy. Now i'm back home and am using a broadband connection. When i try to install packages via ..synaptic package manager , it pops with an error saying.. it cannot connect to the proxy "172.16.1.5:8080". Yes ,of course it should not be able to,as i am not in that vicinity anymore. I have changed the settings to direct connection in preferereces->network in the synaptic package manager secondly, changed the network proxy settings and applied it system wide. thirdly, I configured the /etc/apt/apt.conf file.. changed it to Acquire::http :: proxy "false"; But, nothing will work, still getting that error.

Ok so I having the same issue as everyone else but it still exists despite the solutions other people are experiencing. Update manager, synaptic, and apt-get are not working no aptitude on here. Update manager says: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_ i18n_Translation-en%5fUS, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' apt-get has errors with headers, finding files, and wrong file types. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

This is my first Linux experience so probably at the prenewbie level. I have installed Xubuntu and played with it for a couple weeks. The question is about software download attempts from Ubuntu Software center. When I attempt to use it I get the error messages:
Failed to lock the package manager
Check if you are currently running another software management tool, e.g. Synaptic or aptitude. Only one tool is allowed to make changes at a time. The package indexes are currently changed by apt-get. Does this mean that SPM is active and the Software Center will not function until I change enablement between the two? If so, how do I accomplish the task?

For those of you who have no idea, the original plan for Ubuntu 11.04 was to have only one beta release, but that has changed and there is now a Beta 1 and Beta 2. The Beta 1 has been scheduled for the time the original Beta was scheduled for, and Beta 2 has been scheduled for 20110414. For those of you who have seen my profile, that falls on the day I turn 18! (Just wanted to add my 2 here). However, I plan to be humble about it. Guys (and girls), what would you do if a Linux distro version (alpha, beta, or final) was released on your birthday?

I have used Debian Linux for two years, most recently the seventh or so iteration of Version 5. I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former. In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attachedDebian_error_msg.png? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.
