Aug 29, 2010I have an Ubuntu server with no physical access to it, only via ssh/vnc.
It is stuck on a 1680x1050 resolution and in the system display settings the menus are disabled since there is no detected real display connected.
I need to lower the resolution to e.g. 800x600. code...

Jan 14, 2011i am using putty to connect to the linux server and i am using nano as my text editor to write a bash script.
this is my script:
echo "Please enter your Username"
read userName
userName= grep $USER /etc/passwd | cut -d: -f5
echo "Welcome " $userName | cat >> output.txt
the problem i have is that when i enter my username, the output (my real name) does not display in the output.txt. instead it displays in putty. so when i run my script in putty it shows the message to enter username and after i enter my username my real name appears below it. i want it to show in the output.txt

Jun 2, 2010I am on Lucid 10.04 with Nvidia 9600m (v195.36.24) My TV is 1280x720, my Laptop is 1600x900 (Closest setting to the TV is 1360x768 ). I plug my laptop to my tv via an HDMI cable. I press F1 to get into my presentation mode, and the tv shows most of the desktop, but not all of it. Is there any way to conveniently make it so it automatically sets it to 1280x720?

All of the examples I've found don't see to work with all of the special characters in the line that I need to replace. Then I need to add a line after the above edit like this: types = [ "device-mapper", 253 ]

Feb 16, 2010Here is my situation:I have a series of .plt files that are geared for a device that has it's xy origin at the lower left of the paper however some devices use the center of the paper as it's origin in a piped shell script how can I convert this file to a center origin plot file?Here are some knowns: the existing file always Lower Left 0.0 the existing file max xy is the page upper right x.x the desired output file must have it's 0.0 at the exact center of page (page size will vary). Ideas: Based on the sample files included maybe use PU and PD as the triggers for inputs to be calculated as any other commands have nothing to do with coordinates.

I have been able to use find -type d to list directories and subdirs but I want a numerical value of dirs and subdirs. I know ls -l gives a count but when I try ls -l -d all it shows is "." I also have tried a combination with the -R option but nothing seems to be working for me.Please forgive my ignorance but I am working on a script for class and this is the first step.

May 4, 2009I tried ubuntu for a few weeks, but I couldn't get the nvidia drivers to work, I tried everything. So, I got sick of that, and went to download OpenSuse, which seems to be even nicer (..... ) I downloaded the 11.1 liveCD (gnome) from here. I nicley got the welcome screen, and the option screen (liveCD, check errors etc.). I chose LiveCD and it started booting, I got the splash screen with the loading bar, and after it completely loaded, the screen turns black with a lot of messages and at the end:

Nov 6, 2010Ever since upgrading to Fedora 14, my system has been almost unusable. I can only have a few windows of anything open before I start getting messages about:

I am unable to open any new windows then and lots of programs crash.
