Debian Configuration :: Virtual Server Not Rebooting?
Jul 6, 2015
I have a rented vserver running at Strato [URL]. It came preinstalled with Debian 7. I upgraded it to Debian 8, what seemed to run fine, all services running. The problems came up when I tried to reboot the server to test the init system. It just does not come up, I cannot ping it, nothing. I can boot into the rescue system, mount the system partitions and chroot in to the filesystem. In this state I also can run my services, including apache2 and mysql. In the syslog I find nothing about the reboot. Now I need to reboot ino the normal system. I already tried to resume to sysvinit without success.

I was playing with my debian server when something went totally wrong while i was editing something on my network interface,i removed those crap that i wrote and left the network interface configuration as it was
Like for example after re-editing my network interface,it was like :
As i did a network restart, i get this error saying :
There is already a pid file /var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid with pid 2802 killed old client process, removed PID file.
What is this error and how can i fix it,because every time im re booting my server i lost my network config.

I'm using Debian 5 with Exim 4 on my VPS. My purpose is to make mailboxes for each virtual host on my server. What do I have: 1. Exim is set correctly - receiving mail from [URL]... is successfull. 2. Mail for [URL]... is delivered, and the mail for [URL]... too. But [URL]... is the site written to /etc/hosts (it's localhost), and [URL]... is virtual host. But mail from both boxes writes to /var/mail/mail. Now what do I need: 1. Make mail for [URL]... store in [URL].... and mail for [URL].. store in www/Maildir. 2. Make mailboxes like [URL].... to receive mail by Thunderbird. 3. Set passwords for [URL]... and [URL]... (I don't want to enter my system user/root passwords).

I've installed Nginx-full on a debian jessie server and want to install Wordpress, but for some reason Nginx-full isn't being seen as providing the httpd virtual package, so wordpress insists on installing apache.
According to everything I can find, nginx-full provides the httpd virtual package and this shouldn't happen. Is this a bug?

How to best manage both http and https pages on the same apache-server without conflicts. For example, if i have both 000-default.conf and 000-default-ssl.conf pointing to mydomain.com, and don't want users who visit mydomain.com without specifically type the https-prefix to be redirected to the https-page - how to handle users using browserplugins such as https-everywhere etc?
Another option would be to create a subdomain ssl.mudomain.com and have users who want to reach the ssl site to have to type ssl. I have tested several things with https everywhere enabled in my own browser, and it seems really hard to make this working the way i want, in one way or another i always end up getting redirected to the ssl-site automatically.
The reason i need this to work is because i run one site that i don't care much about SSL, that is the "official" part of that site, and i also host some things for friends and family on the SSL-part. This would not have been a problem if it wasn't that i use self-signed certificates for my ssl-site and the major user become afraid when a certificate-warning pops up in their browser and therefor leave the site.

I installed a new squeeze serverXen Hypervisor runs the server as Dom0 anda virtual Windows XP.The server runs samba, postfix, dovecot, squid, cups and hylafax with a Frritz ISDN card (module fcpci.ko).The used memory of Dom0 rises slowly (about 5MB /h) until the system crashes. As a workaround i installed a reboot every 24 hours.htop shows normal behavior. The system is already in production, so i can't stop services to track this bug.I need some hints how to debug the running system to find out, where the memory gets lots.

I'm having an issue with setting up the virtual hosts on my web server. I have 2 virtual hosts (example1.com, example2.com). example1.com works but example2.com is sent to the index file of example1.com. I did some searching on google and it seems the problem might be with my /etc/hosts file.
First virtual host that the second is also directed to...in sites-available/sites-enabled (note port 80 is blocked by my isp so I use 8080)
Code:
Second virtual host file
Code:
And my hosts file
Code:
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
Also I'm using a dyndns.org...would that make a difference?

I have installed virtualbox because i wanted to run .exe files for my job. After installation and configuration it asked me to reboot. From that moment when reboots it returns the full symbol of fedora and then the screen becomes black with white letters. I couldn't login ever again. I am new in Fedora, i don't have a backup of my files and i cant't work. I think that this could be a command line or something like this. Is there any possibility to login even once to copy my files to another disk and then to setup Fedora again?

How can i get a RAID virtual image disk?
What i need is to mount several directories from any other partiton (or file system) as a new merge file system that can grow or decrease depending on the free space. As if it was a dinamic RAID,so i can work with huge files distributed over the partitions mounted.
Ejemp: /mnt/sda1/dir_raid1 + /home/dir_raid2 + /mnt/sda3/dir_raid3 ---> /mnt/RAID/
mhddfs and unionfs <---- are not the solution im searching (cant use huge files)

I have a debian squeeze box with dual NICs that I'm trying to configure with two virtual hosts. I'd like to have one of these machines act as a router for the 2nd NIC so I can plug in a switch and have a separate subnet.
Something like:
- Openwrt router 192.168.1.1 (firewall/vpn/stats for 192.168.1.0/24 domain)
- KVM machine with 2 NICs (192.168.1.2)
- Virtual machine #1 has a fixed IP of 192.168.1.3 (virtual nic)
- Virtual machine #2 has a fixed IP of 192.168.1.4 (virtual nic) but also controls the 2nd nic and routes 192.168.80.0/24
I'd like to use the 192.168.80.0/24 network for testing equipment without poisoning my existing network.

I want to setup some virtual machines that will use the same architecture and debian-version as my host-machine. I have started to setup VMs with a netinstall-image and now want to add more software using apt-get. As most of the software I will use is already installed on my host-machine I wonder if there is any way to configure apt in such a way that it will not download packages from the internet, but will use the packages from my host-machine to save network-traffic. Is there a good may to populate VMs using the debs from the host-machine.

I now have 2 desktops running debian. I have virtual servers running in desktop 1, and I am hosting my photos using Gallery2. I have copied Gallery2 and the mysql over to desktop 2. I have entered port forward to desktop 1 using port 80 (using my router), and desktop 2 using port 1000. I can only access Gallery2 in desktop1. If I tried to access Gallery2 in desktop 2, I got re-directed to desktop1.
Questions:
1. Are home routers capable of port forward to more than one computers in a home network behind the firewall of the router? It is Belkin N+ router.
2. Can multiple virtual servers be setup in 2 desktops?

I have a ThinkPad W520 with nVidia Quadro 1000M and Nouveau drivers. I use external monitor with extended desktop using XRandR. My beef with this setup is that I get just one virtual desktop of a (1440+1920)x1080 size whereas what I would like to have is being able to have one separate (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my 1440x1080 external monitor with, for example, some reference material open, while have other programs working on another (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my main 1920x1080 screen. I've read that this might be possible with so called zaphod mode, but it looks like it involves static rules in xorg.conf which I would like to avoid since from time to time I need to carry my laptop with me without external monitor.

I'm attempting to use a network bridge to connect my virtual machine, like so:
[Code]...
The issue is that when I type the following command, I get the further following horrible error message that doesn't seem to really point me to anywhere and I can't seem to find any relevant information to my problem on the web:
root@darkstacks:~# qemu-system-i386 -hda test.img -m 128 -curses -net nic -net tap,ifname=tap0 warning: could not configure /dev/net/tun: no virtual network emulation
Does anyone have any idea what I need to do here? My processor does not have the vmx flag, as it's a 2.4GHz P4. I don't know if that might have something to do with it.

I don't know if this should be a followup to my prior topic [URL] ....
Each of the pieces I've installed all have an "Alias" directive in the conf file to link the directory where they live to be present on my server. For instance, DotClear lives in /usr/share/dotclear/web/ and there is a directive
Code: Select allAlias /dotclear /usr/share/dotclear/web
that directs http://myserver/dotclear to that site.
Now, I've set up VirtualHost entries for my DotClear and Owncloud with their own hostnames.
Code: Select all<VirtualHost *:443>
ServerName myowndotclear.com
ServerAlias www.myowndotclear.com
DocumentRoot /usr/share/dotclear/web
[Code] ....
Something similar for Owncloud.
The problem is when I go to [URL] ...., I get to my mythweb site.
This is not so good. So, for the sites that have their own hostnames, I removed the "Alias ..." directive. Of course, now I can't get to the hosts by going to the primary site which is probably fine, but I also still get my mythweb since that doesn't have it's own virtualhost entry.
This doesn't seem like correct behavior. Is there a better place to put the "Alias ..." directive so that it only works from one site and not all of them?
I am also thinking I should just link the directories into /var/www/html, but I'm not sure that's a better solution.

I'm building a Debian Live system, [URL], and I've pared it down to a very light distro. It is using the IceWM, has the basic linux commands, and very very little else.
When I run "top" and "ps aux", I see that I have multiple terminals and logins waiting to be used. It's a small amount, but I'd like to make that RAM usable elsewhere. The indicated commands are: "/bin/login -f" and "-bash", and I have one of each associated with each tty[1-7]. I may want to keep tty1 and tty2, just in case, but I can't imagine wanting 3-7.
So, what I'm looking for is a way to stop tty[3-7] from even starting in the first place.
I saw on one forum the suggestion of modifying the /etc/init/tty[1-7].conf files, but these files aren't present, I presume because it's a "Live" system.

I am *finally* getting around to rebuilding my file-sharing computer. I'll be sharing files with both Linux and Windoze machines. It's a home network, so there's nothing fancy needed. I know I have to tweak my smb.conf file until I'm satisfied with the features and security. I'm using SWAT and I'm starting with a bare-bones conf file. It's not secure but I can see the server and selected files/directories from my other Linux box.
My really dumb question is, do I have to reboot both the server and the client machines every time I change the SAMBA configuration? I thought I just had to stop and restart the SAMBA service in the SWAT software - but then the server disappears from my client. It looks like I need to reboot both machines for the client to see the server.

I am renting a virtual server which is running Linux Debian Etch. I have access through the root account.
I am very new to virtual servers, and also very new to Debian Etch. I am happy I found this forum when trying to research on the Internet.
The things I need to know are:
- Comes Debian Etch with a GUI (graphical user interface) which I can use on the rented virtual server?
- And if not, I would like to ask the community here if there are any GUIs which I could install to that server, and how?
I want to be able to access the server in a much easier way than to have to type each command. I want to use that server to host domains, as soon as I am more self-confident with Debian Etch.

I will be relocating to a permanent residence sometime in the next year or two. I've recently begun thinking about the best way to implement a home-based network. It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible. My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet. The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.
In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. BTW--in case you're wondering why I'm posting here, it's because I run Debian on all my workstations/servers (running VirtualBox as a VM for Windows XP on one workstation).
