Debian Multimedia :: Shutdown Delay Time - How To Change It

I have Linux debian 7.7.0 i386-amd64 under VBox 4.3.20 and here is the problem:::
When I open the menu from Linux's top-right corner and click SHUT DOWN..., it shows the dialog with choices, and that Linux guest will automatically shutdown after 60 seconds and I need to change that delay value to 3 seconds. Of course I could just re-click Shut Down -button again, but I don't want to do it. Period.
By Googling I found these "instructions" for UBUNTU:
None of this worked on my 13.04 system. In the end I re-compiled gnome-session.
In gsm_shell.c and gsm_logout_dialog.c change #define AUTOMATIC_ACTION_TIMEOUT from 60 to 5

I have GRUB "1.98-1ubuntu6", and while I have been using GRUB, I have always wondered how to change the delay time prior to GRUB booting into the default operating system. I would even like to switch it off, if possible. Thanks for any help you may have, as I can't seem to find mention of it anywhere, and I think a 10-second wait is silly, having been accustomed to adjusting LILO to any delay time I liked.

I'm using Debian 8.2 from a very recent download of the latest NetInst (less than 2 weeks). I'm sort of new to Linux - More accurately, I've used Unix and Linux extensively in the past, so most of my knowledge is dated. In particular, the whole systemd / systemctl paradigm is completely new to me.
Problem: I've added an entry to /etc/fstab to mount a NAS drive as CIFS. When I do a system shutdown or reboot, the system hangs for 90 seconds trying to unmount the NAS. If I manually umount the NAS prior to shutdown / reboot everything works fine.
I've done a fair amount of investigation and web searches, but haven't found a fix yet. Apparently several people were encountering similar problems about a year back, and it seems pretty clear that the root cause what ordering of steps in the shutdown process, e.g., WLAN being turned off before unmounting filesystems. This seems to have been resolved for most users (no one is discussing it any more), but I'm now running into the same issue. Ugh.
I tried to add a shell script to /etc/rc0.d to umount the NAS first in the shutdown process. This had no effect. I assume this is because the new systemd / systemctl paradigm supplants the old /etc/rc model of runlevel control, though it is rather baffling (to me, at least) as to why /etc/rc* still exists if the system is no longer using it...?
Here's some things I'd like to try, but how to proceed:
1. In the new systemd / systemctl paradigm, how do I examine and change the ordering of steps in the shutdown process? I've seen a lot of documentation on systemd, but nothing tells me how to do what I used to be able to do with /etc/rc with a simple rename of a symlink. If I knew how to look at the order of shutdown and change that ordering, I'm fairly certain I could identify and resolve this issue.
2. Is there some other way to mount my CIFS NAS other than editing /etc/fstab? Is it possible that my manual edit to /etc/fstab is the cause of this issue? My research into systemd indicates that it IS supposed to be compatible with /etc/fstab. I have not yet found documentation describing how to mount a filesystem at boot WITHOUT editing /etc/fstab ...

I am currently using a Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04
When I press the power button, I see a dialogue box which asks for confirmation and if nothing is confirmed system automatically shuts down in 60 seconds.
I want to change this time of 60 seconds to say 30 seconds. Is it possible? Also is there a way to hide that dialogue box...

I've noticed g-p-m refreshes information extremely delayed. Sometimes it takes many many minutes before it notifies me that I'm running on battery. how I can change this refresh rate? I've drained the batteries once recently believing the icon that said 89% less than a minute before the batteries were completely discharged (my battery lasts for about 15-20 minutes).

When I click logout or shut down I get a countdown saying I will be logged out or shut down in 60 seconds, then it counts down. I can click the "shut down now" button, but I find this behavior incredibly irritating. When I click logout I would like to logout NOW.

I'm trying to change the time stamps on a bunch of pictures in the same directory, because several cameras were used, some of them with the wrong time zone.exiftool seems to be the correct package to use, but it doesn't seem to work.
The following command seems to be the recommended way to subtract 1 hour from all .JPG files in the directory, but the exif data in the file and even the time stamps don't change.

I've got a box with 2 interfaces, with IP1 = 192.168.100.1 and IP2 = 10.1.1.1 respectively on them. I've got an iptables rule that looks like:

If I get 2 consecutive packets from the same address and port from 192.168.100.0/24, they get SNAT-ed and come out of the same port on 10.1.1.1. If then I get another packet from the same address and port 10 minutes later, then it gets SNAT-ed, but comes out of a different port on 10.1.1.1. My question is: how can I set the time delay I would like iptables to remember its incoming address/port to outgoing port mappings?

I set my location, but Debian displays DATE in some messed format. I would expect such neat OS to recognize all those local settings based on my location, but that's not the case. It seems that Debian follows locale settings by set language (which is en_us in my case, as I guess in majority uses) or this format is default in any case
I would like to set date/time to DD.MM.YY. hh:mm:ss, and programs that display date data to follow this setting. Simply put, in Windows there is Control Panel and you set location, then OS uses some regional settings, like currency, separators, date/time format.

I just installed debian unstable with kde 4.4.5 on a new hp desktop. Just about everything is working fine except when I try to logout or shutdown by right clicking on the desktop. No matter which option I choose--logout, shutdown, or restart--the screen goes black and nothing happens. I'm forced to do a hard shutdown or use alt-SysRq-B to reboot. I can reboot or shutdown using the command line when logged into kde.

I have debian 8.2 installed with kde desktop. When I try to shutdown the system sometimes, nothing happens. the desktop stays put. i can continue working though..the system does not freeze. The only option is to log into the terminal as su and shutdown with the shutdown command.

is there a way to configure shutdown on critically low battery to give me a bit of time before actually shutting down?I've set Gnome to shutdown on low battery. Problem is, I don't get any notification about battery running low, and as soon as battery level reaches the critical threshold, the system starts shutdown without me having any possibility to quickly complete some tasks. Of course, I'd increase battery level thresholds accordingly.

Since I've made the switch to Systemd, I've been having various problems with LightDM.
The most interesting and frustrating problem is when I choose Shutdown or Restart from the XFCE4 shutdown menu, the XFCE4 session closes but then the lightDM greeter pops back up. The system doesn't even try to shut down.
Its as if restart and shutdown both act the same as the Logout button.
Im running XFCE4 4.12 (but same behaviour on 4.10). I have the latest LightDM and the latest Systemd.

I know the problem has been partly solved in this old thread [URL] .....
Now we have Jessie as stable, yet LXDE doesn't shutdown properly:
On the same computers, Wheezy LXDE shut down very fast
I installed Jessie from the netinstall image.
On a 2007 computer, it's like the old days with a Pentium II running some version of Puppy Linux or Slitaz. The system shuts down after a while but the computer remains on.
On a 2013 laptop, I added the line init=/bin/systemd in the Grub default file as advised on the old thread above. The laptop shuts down after a while, the system first, then the hard disk goes to sleep, then all the leds are off.
If I run the magic command, the computer shutdowns in a breeze, perhaps even quicker than good old Wheezy:

Now, is this still a systemd bug? Doesn't look like it since the systemctl command works. Is it an LXDE bug? Looks like it in a way - if the LXDE shutdown button enabled the systemctl poweroff command, I suppose the button would work?
Is there a way to make the LXDE shutdown button run the systemctl poweroff command?
I'm glad Wheezy is still with us because I wouldn't install Jessie for newbies — they'd think shutdown (through clicking on a button) is even worse than in Windows.

After GRUB 2 comes up (I'm running Ubuntu 10.10) and I choose the OS to boot, there is about a 5 second delay where nothing appears to happen after I make the selection -- no disk activity. It happens consistently every time I boot. Again, this is after I choose the OS to boot, so it shouldn't have anything to do with the standard delay to allow me to choose the appropriate OS.Is there a good way to troubleshoot this and determine what is causing the delay?

I have a linux (Slackware) machine and the time/date is like, June 23rd 2003, 10:00am (It's 11 here) and I am not able to set the time to have it correct. I change the timezome to Montreal but the time is still wrong.
Is there a way to force it to sync with my domain controler or even another online NTP server?

I have two mice, both are three button (left, right and middle) with scroll, one PS/2 and one wireless. The wireless is working properly and the PS/2 is not. The right button, the middle button and the scroll do not work.# X -configure has detected only one, which one? Do i need to put another Section Mouse1 for the second mouse? Why do i have on the Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7" so many buttons? From what i searched it should have been Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" (that's for the scroll button, up and down).
