While using monofree package, trying to install mono presents a conflict but aptitude just erases monofree and installs mono anyway.Is there a way to force the system to keep monofree and show an error when I try to install something that conflicts?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a pdf file (nasm documentation) that used to be displayed perfectly with xpdf, but now all code example lines remain blank. On the terminal I get repeated lines such as:

I tried to figure out the problem... the same problem occurs with both evince and okular. However it does not occur when opening the same file under root (tested with xpdf), so it seems to be some permission problem. I tried searching on the error message but couldn't find a working solution.
When booting, the grub menu appears and allows me to boot from the internal hard disk (sda) any OS there, such as WHEEZY (sda9). On the external disk (sdb) there is a dd'd copy (not an installation) of SQUEEZE (sdb1), which at one time was on sda but which has different partition assigments listed in its grub.cfg than the current ones shown below for sda.

Can I manually boot the SQUEEZE copy on sdb1 using grub commands (set, linux, initrd, boot) without disturbing the WHEEZY and other OSs on sda? Or will they be disrupted?Alternatively if for example JESSIE is installed in sdb3, for example, can it be booted similarly without affecting the installations on sda? I hesitate to try this by trial and error because of the work and time involved in rebuilding messed-up OSs to their desired configurations.
I have a server with two gig-e ports, eth0 and eth1. When eth0 the only port that is connected to a network it will get online ok. It is the port used to connect to the internet. eth1 is used for PXE / TFTP / DHCP server for a private network. eth1 will serve ip's ok. The issue is when both are connected at the same time. eth0 to our LAN, and eth1 to the private network; eth0 does not ping or load pages in firefox. eth1 will still serve ips'. Is there any reason why eth0 would stop working if eth1 is connected to a switch? eth0 ip is 192.168.10.110, eth1 ip is 192.168.1.1 different subnets.

This created a conflict with the apache webserver on my main server. My router will direct the user requests to only one of them. Is there a way to direct the aspx.net users to the VirtualBox IP and the other users to apache on the same domain? I tried to do that with bind and a php redirect page but failed.

From some searching, I decided that I have the 14e4:4727 broadcom chipset. The driver I need is partially supported by the 2.6.33 kernel. I installed squeeze and downloaded the 2.6.35-7 kernel from kernel.org Then compiled it with the debian 2.6.32 kernel config file. Once it was done I installed the kernel deb files, and restarted it.

I'm running debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 and have spent an interesting day trying to get nvidia-glx running...What appears to be happening, is that installing nvidia-glx uninstalls X.I've tried various installation methods (Synaptic, apt-get, module-assistant) and the final result seems to always be /usr/bin/X not found.Re-installing X blows away nvidia-glx.The symptoms look a lot like this post: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=45188Is it possible that this problem has returned?

If it's not going to be installed, then where is the conflict? I've seen "Depends: X but it is not going to be installed", which makes sense. The only solutions are to remove xfce4-notifyd or to keep most of the KDE stuff uninstalled. apt-get also wants to remove xfce4-notifyd. Edit: Ok, it looks like both plasma-widgets-workspace and xfce4-notifyd provide notification-daemon, but I still don't understand why the aptitude error doesn't tell me that xfce4-notifyd conflicts with plasma-widgets-workspace instead of notification-daemon.
Is there any way to force the system to use swap space instead of RAM? I just upgrade form 512 to 1 gb. And when I installed ubuntu I give the swap space 1gb according to 512mb RAm requirement. Now I have 1 gb. When I use heavy applications i-e firefox, office, any game etc at a time the processing go to 100% and the RAM use 50+% of the memory. No swap memory will be use. Any way to use swap instead of RAM?

I was wondering on the updater service slowly over time installing packages overtop packman packages.
For example, some multimedia guides mention to switch all packages to a certain repository like packman. At some point afterwards system updates will overwrite these.
I don't fully understand how updates work, however, is it needed or possible to set a rule for which repos are used as a reference for system updates?
I am new to ldap. I've installed openldap server in a centos but yet to test it. My question is how to force user to login to the system using ldap instead of non-ldap login? For example, I created some users in the ldap server, these users are exist in /etc/passwd, when ssh login to server as user, it normally authenticates through /etc/passwd file without being forced to use ldap.

Unfortunatly, it seems that I can only use the burner with Nero4Linux or Brasero, but not K3B.DVD-RAM/+RW packet writing seems neither to work out of the box, nor by the setup as suggested in /usr/share/doc/udftools/README.Debian or the media4linux howto(just to name the most promising, i definitly read more on the issue).
I tried to format the DVDs in various udf revisions, as well as ext2 just to check, but without success.As I am close to the point where I would rule out the possibility to obtain package writing capability, I dare to ask for help.I would be very grateful for any hint or reading recommendation on the issue.

View 6 Replies View RelatedFirefox keeps trying to download docx files with my default text editor. Is there a way to get Firefox to just open everything using xdg-open?
There seems to be no way to get this browser to consistently open files with my chosen default applications. My mime-type settings are only obeyed sometimes. The pertinent file type isn't in the Application list of browser preferences, and there's no way to add it. The "Do this automatically..." option in the file download dialog is greyed out, so I have to go through my file system and choose the desired application every time I download a file of that type.
I decided I was going to compile XChat from source today for "fun." What I ended up doing was spending a few hours getting it to compile, then find out everything didn't work the way I thought it did. I was under the impression that after I ran "sudo make install" I was "upgrading", when in reality I'm just installing a seperate version alongside the old one. Apparently I have to keep the old version so every program that was compiled with it will continue to work, so how do I:
1) Force a program to use a specific version of GTK when compiling.
2) Find where my version of GTK installed to.
I've asked some people and I've just been told to "learn LD_PRELOAD". I've googled and can't figure how I could even apply that to my current problem
I am just too tired and am missing something in the man pages for aptitude and not getting my search terms right but I can't seem to find a way to make aptitude ignore a couple of supposed broken packages (they work just fine by the way). The only way I can find to remidy the situation is to remove those couple of packages or upgrade several things to their Squeeze counter parts. I really don't want to try and do the upgrade as at home I am stuck on a 56k connection. Removing the broken packages I guess won't be too bad if I can find the debs again after I install a couple of things I want to add to my system. I would however just like to make aptitude ignore the state of my system and try to install what I want anyway.

Most of the time there are no problems.Occasionally a station's transmission signal disappears, caused by quirky atmospheric conditions, usually at night.Noticing these signal outages is easy by the mencoder error message:dvb_streaming_read, attempt N. %x failed with errno %y when reading %z bytes"Lengthy outages are unbearable because mencoder silently waits forever rather than quit.The significant problem with lengthy signal outages is mencoder continues recording for the time specified by the -endpos parameter. Thus, for example, if the recording is scheduled for 2 hours and there is a 20 minute loss of signal, the recording does not end until 2 hours and 20 minutes after starting.
Generally, when the interruption is lengthy the recording is ruined and I don't care to watch. I would like to programmatically tell mencoder to stop waiting and quit.Is there a way to do this? Say, after ten minutes of no signal, just terminate.I do not notice any parameters that might offer that option, but I could be overlooking something obvious.
