Feb 19, 2011
I am uploading the links of 8 modules of Redhat basic video tutorial in both English and Tamil which I created to all of you because I came to know that you are equally interested in FOSS like I do. YOU ARE FREE TO DISTRIBUTE THIS VIDEO TO ANY ONE WITHOUT GETTING ANY MONEY FROM THEM.
I am unable to install vlc player in my redhat 5.2 box. can anyone suggest me any other good video player for my redhat 5.2 box and from where i can download it with all dependencies .
I am learning japanese and I would like to be able to switch between english and japanese input while keeping an english interface. How would I achieve that? I am using KDE, by the way.
In the Kiten documentation I read that pressing Shift+Space would enable japanese input (built-in in Kiten, according to the documentation). But that does not seem to work in my system.
I'm trying to make Japanese input work with Scim, but when I modify Locale to make it work, all the menu(pulldown menu, title etc.)also becomes Japanese too. Is there anyway to keep English menus/titles while Japanese(or any other language) input method with SCIM is enabled ?
As a strategy for learning linux I have decided to adopt using a lean windows based approach. I want to focus on command line machine system, network basics, and file management knowledge. In other words find out how desktop manager does it's business, so I know how to master my machine, but by and large once I have made my choices, leave it alone to do just that.
I figure I should know how applications are internally configured etc., but I also figure an apps GUI and config choices should take care of installations, and program usage as in M$ windows. Surely taking care of an applications dependencies are the responsibility of the developer, are they not?
I am working my way through "Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition (Version 1.0.0)" right now for an overall viewpoint. Can anyone suggest a specific source for a point by point explanation of the command basis of a generalised "desktop management" application (KDE,LXDE)? Better yet would be if it had some parallel comparison of the varied approaches taken by different distributions of linux.
A secondary question, is that allowed? Up to a certain point in Ms windows, a thorough knowledge of DOS 6.xx would theoreticaly enable one to more or less duplicate the actions of the windows overlay. Is there a basic distribution (or subset in all of them maybe?) of linux that would be consistent with that paradigm? What would be analogous to DOS batch files, or GM-Basic? Oh! that's 3.I am certainly appreciating the depth of this forum, and the breadth of knowledge among you forumite's. Reading it is time well spent.
I cant mount a directory on red hat 5 from red hat 4 using fstab.I keep getting permission denied.I mount directories on the same red hat 5 sys from other red hat 5 and 2 old HPUX systems using fstab. When I try to telnet to it i get "no route to host."
I recently installed language packs for Japanese and changed my system language to it, too. The problem is, now that I try to go back to English, the locale doesn't change back, only the menus are in english. "Apply system wide" in the Language Support didn't do anything; Firefox is in japanese too. Here is my locale output:
I need a tutorial on how to do formatting in the vi editor. I looked in google, but couldn't find much. Formatting as in bold, font, font size, center text, etc.
I have installed Slackware 13 with language support and run it in init 4 mode (GUI, automatically start to KDE). When logout the menu is in arabic or some symbols that I don't understand. I try to set locale to English, but still the same symbols appear.I fix it. How can I delete this thread?
Please recommend me the best book in English Language and the best website in English Language that teach me Linux step by step. The PDFs of the books are better!!I just want to learn LinuxOS as deeper as I can!!!
I have recently loaded Linux Mint on an old IBM Laptop and am very happy with the GUI; however, I would like to learn how to use the Linux shell/terminal. I don't know any of the commands. Is there a good online source for this information--a tutorial or list?
I downloaded Lives. It looks neat. I cannot figure out how to get still images to form like a slide show. I was able to open a short movie I have uploaded onto my pc from my digital camera. Edit -> Multitrack mode seems to be where multiple movies can be placed. I do not seem to be able to place the still images on here. Maybe I can and they just don't show up on the timeline well.
Where to find a plug-in for Firefox that supports the following functions: - Showing translation of a word by a simple shortcut (like Shift + Right click). - Allowing to modify list of dictionaries (by giving links to web dictionaries). - Storing the words into personal vocabulary for later reference. - Allowing to type in the word for translation. There is a large list of plug-ins for Firefox that have some of the functionality above, but after quite a long time I wasn't able to find one that satisfies all of the requirements.
I have now a second post on the work I am doing. I am trying to complete a model for translating English texts into German. My concept is a model using a text editor with only simple executable scripts being written to perform steps in the process. I need to use a language for doing simple things like tagging words and translating using a dictionary I am building. I am beginning to use AWK in conjunction with Bash and need to find some members with whom I can dialog on particular topics; even getting advice. Are there any AWK users in the community, using the language for processing text?
I have downloaded and ran Austrumi-2.1.6 "Live CD" and although the OS booted up and connected to the Internet easily enough I just can't find the option to make the OS boot up using the English language. I must be missing something but can't figure out what?
Very simple question but very frustrating as none of the other threads/bug reports/whatever have had quite the same problem. I want gnome clock to display the time in 12 hour format. The suggested solution is something like right-click the clock -> Preferences and somewhere there will be an option to choose 12/24 hour time. Problem is I don't have that option.
The help has a note that 12 hour time "is not shown if your session language does not use the 12 hour clock" but this really shouldn't be a problem? My language/locale/city, everything I can think of, it's all some variation of en_GB, UK English, Brisbane, Australia: all places which should allow the option of 12 hour clock! So why don't I have that option?
I need a English dictionary to search meaning of words. I have done google searches as well as searched this forum but was unsuccessful in finding one. I am trying to find and install an offline dictionary i.e. it should work even if there is no internet connection. It should not be online dictionary.
when i try to play a video, from internet it is showing the message 'Either javascript turned off or download and install latest adobe flash player'. But eventhough I downloaded and installed adobe flash player I am unable to play any video and still it is giving the above message. what is the reason?
1. I understand you can protect your files or directories in your website by setting file/directory permissions. The meaning of r w x is clear to me, but I'm not sure how to proceed... Starting with the index.html file, if I wanted to make it so that anyone in the world can read it but can't modify it, do I set its permissions to rwxr-xr-x? If I set it to rwxr--r--, would that mean the file couldn't be served? I mean, what does the x setting do on a .html file, how can a .html file be executable?
2. If file permissions work on the lines of owner-group-others, in the context of a website, who is 'group'? As far as I can tell, there's only the owner, which is me, and others, which is the world accessing the site. Am I correct in thinking that by default, say when creating a website on a shared hosting server, there is no group unless I specifically set one up?
3. My ISP allows the DynDNS.org service, meaning that I could serve a website from my home. It's too early to go that route just yet, but for future reference, I would like to ask about the server software called Hiawatha. It is said to be secure, but having read some evaluations of it, it doesn't seem to offer anything that couldn't be accomplished with Apache or Cherokee, it's just that its security settings are simpler and easier to configure. Am I right about this? Or does Hiawatha truly offer something that the other major server packages don't?
I had Windows XP working. I then put in a new hard disk and installed Redhat 5 on it. rom then i could only boot into Redhat. Further, everyting is very slow. Anothe rproblem is that Redhat does not see my netwrok so I cannot get onto the Internet. I need to have the choice of booting into XP or Redhat.
Can someone recommend a good c++ tutorial? I'm not a n00b but i'd prefer something that is directed toward people who have absolutely no experience with coding. code...
