I have a computer I recently uninstalled the operating system from and was wanting to use Linux Ubuntu. After burning the cd and trying to install it to the computer it gives me "Invalid System Disk, Replace then disk and press any key." I am unsure how to start this and I am not even sure if I have all the files, I need to install the Linux Ubuntu 10.04 operating system step by step.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Kubuntu Karmic on my Dell Inspiron laptop - about 200 bug fixes behind because my only available internet is a cellular connection on a crappy wi-fi router - and last night, I suspended it, but it shut down instead. Not a problem, it does this fairly often, figure the RAM gets jostled or something.
But when I go to boot it up, it gets stuck at the pre-loading screen before getting garbled and dropping to the shell, where it says "mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/[insert hex code here] failed: invalid argument". Of course, mounting /root/sys, /root/dev and /root/proc fails, (directory does not exist) and it gives me the busybox initramfs prompt.
I don't know were this goes so I'm just gonna put it here
Basically earlier today i figured i wanted to try out backtrack 4 but I could only have a maximum of 4 partitions on an hd at a time.
So i deleted my partition that contained my arch home directory (didn't really have any data on it and i figured i could just make a new one later) to create an extended partition to put backtrack on. Well all went well except now when I select arch instead of backtrack i get a disk check error.
This is the first part of the error, I can't exactly copy and paste it as its on my laptop. code...

This is the third 9.10 install to do this on two different laptops, so wondering what's up...
In both cases, the goal was to leave a large chunk of unpartitioned disk after the Ubuntu partitions, for a second OS install or a filesystem Ubuntu cannot create like NTFS.
When I install with manual partitions, the system can't boot and asks for me to insert a system disk and press any key. When I reinstall telling Ubuntu to "use the entire disk" it then works.
First laptop, first try:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
First laptop, second try without the /boot partition:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
"use entire disk" works perfectly.
Second laptop, first try:
Same thing, non-system disk or disk error, insert system disk.
Second try "use entire disk" is currently in progress but I expect the same to happen.
I downloaded ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 iso for ps3. I get it to cd with no problem, go through the first phase fine, but then installing the base system I get the error "Warning: Failure while configuring required packages" I press enter it continues then this error comes "failure while configuring base packages. This will b attempted 5 times". Why these errors? I am looking forward to using linux on ps3.

After installation of debian, using the squeeze net-installer, on a HP elitebook 6930P, i get the following error. "non-system disk or disk error"
It is right after boot process, and just when it should load grub. Grub is installed in the MBR. Windows7, is installed as well, and is not an option to remove. (Should not be the problem though).
/ is set with the bootable flag.
The installation went without any issues, and I have actually tried to install twice with the exact same thing.

Not knowing what to do, I've been playing around with it, and copied the files autoconf.h and auto.conf from a folder '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.32-25-generic', but that didn't help, it still says "No rule to make target `code'. Stop."
I have 4 partitions in my system, out of which two(sda1, sda2) have windows on them. I have installed RHEL 4 32 - bit on sda3 and after that , installed installed RHEL 64-bit on to a partition sda 5. Now i am unable to boot into RHEL 32-bit. The error i am getting is Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.
How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?
I can use Ubuntu from my flash drive, but I want to install it in a partition alongside windows. When I try to do this, I come to an 'allocate drive space' window, but whatever I do I get the error message: 'No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu.' I just don't know what this means, or what to do next. I'm loathe to ditch windows, and I don't want to have to use a flashdrive all the time.

If I just copy over a mp3 file it works fine but the when I copy the entire directory I get this error.
I got a HP mini 5102 yesterday and decided that Win7 wasn't doing it for me so I would put ubuntu netbook remix (10.04) on it. Set up a usb stick with the installer (using universal usb creator) and booted from it.
I decided that I would do a full install of ubuntu as I have no need for windows on this machine, hence I left no partition for windows when doing the install. The install went fine but when the machine restarted I was faced with a black screen and the error message "Non-system disk error".
At first I thought that I had messed up the boot order and it was trying to do a network boot as I was getting "PXE-E61: Media Test Failure", so I changed the boot order and fixed that problem but am still getting the non-system disk error.
I figured that I would try and boot from the usb again and see if I could redo the install or just boot from it for the time being but when I tried that I got the non-system disk error again (though, this time if I hit any key when the error message is showing it quickly flashes "geom error" before going back to non-system disk).
Reluctantly I made a temporary install of XP as follows Remove linux drive and install a wiped drive.format ntfs & install windows xp (w/sp3)shift ntfs drive to slave, replace linux drive as master and xp drive as slave. Add it to grub as follows:

I've been playing around with trying to assemble a bare-bones Linux system on a disk.img file through a loop device. I compiled the most recent stable kernel and then copied it onto the root partition in the image. When I try to boot up into the image using qemu, grub gives me this:

I've searched the Net, with little luck. Threads seem to suggest that Centos has this flag compiled into the Berkeley DB RPM by default; whereas SVN doesn't want it. Someone, somewhere, must have got this to work and I'm sure it's something really simple I'm doing wrong.

Booted up system and it stated please insert system disk press any key.So it sounds like my startup got corrupted? I running centos 4.5 on it (old yes) Is there a repair I can perform by a disk? Would it matter if I chose i386 or x86? I cant remeber which version was installed on it.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.10 using wubi (Host system is Win XP). I want to create a symbolic link of a file on the host system (Windows c:abc.doc file) in my Ubuntu home ~/ directory.
When I type command ln /host/abc.doc abc.doc It gives me following error ln: creating hard link `abc.doc' => `/host/abc.doc': Invalid cross-device link
Bottom Line: Dvd Drive died in my toshiba laptop and it was replaced (not before tech for some reason reformatted the Win7 partition... which was 100% un-needed, but thats beside the point now. I redid win7 (the tech installed vista) and am TRYING to "redo grub". Facts: The Slackware AND Ubuntu Partitions ARE STILL THERE and when i use SuperGrub Boot CD (which doesn't restore my grub by itself) to boot into slackware, i can see ALL THE CONTENT of both Linuxes still there including grub on ubuntu partition
(Tri-Boot: Ubuntu, Slackware, and WIn7) I had it working for two years or so, SO i know this "setup" works fine. I am A) Trying to do this as simply as possible. B) Trying to avoid the need to download a 800MB ISO (as seen for this issue on this forum) and trying not to have to reformat Ubuntu Partition (though I have the .Debs I have downloaded for it backed up ... all 1.7GB of them) I have /dev/sda1 as win7, /dev/sda2 as Slack and /dev/sda3 as Ubuntu (which contains Grub Legacy).. Every command I do seems to result in an error like "invalid command" or "invalid Execution format " (i think that second one is right) type errors. I compiled (awhile back) a few kernels for Slackware, but feel goofy that I cant figure what i this out (what i thought was going to be a "2 minute" fix)
