General :: Yum Update - Cannot Retrieve Repository Metadata

Jun 17, 2011

Just starting out to use linux and of course, everytime I first install an OS, I download 2 things, flash and Chrome. Chrome works fine, but flash has been giving me a lot of problems. I've downloaded the yum file from the Adobe website, and unpacked it using the GUI, yet it still didn't work. So I started googling how to use yum. So I followed some directions and tried doing

Code:
yum install flash
this is what I get:
Code:
[root@localhost testpilot]# yum update flash
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Adding en_US to language list
[URL] : [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 6 - ""
Trying other mirror.
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: adobe-linux-i386. Please verify its path and try again
[root@localhost testpilot]#

But thats not the only problem, I think my repo's are messed up or something because look what happens when I type:

Code:
yum update
Code:
[root@localhost testpilot]# yum update flash
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Adding en_US to language list
[URL]: [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 6 - ""
Trying other mirror.
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: adobe-linux-i386. Please verify its path and try again
[root@localhost testpilot]#

As you can see, its still trying to goto the adobe website, even when I type in a completely different command from getting flash. So I guess I have 2 questions:
1) How can I "restore defaults" on yum so that I can actually use it
2) How can I install flash?

If so, are there any linux FLOSS command line tools to add this data?

General :: Properly Extracting Archives With Mac Metadata?

Mar 28, 2011

Someone has sent me a zip file containing some fonts. I extracted it using unzip under Linux, and there are empty files in the top level of the archive, and some files similarly named but beginning with ._ in a __MACOSX subdirectory.

I understand that the __MACOSX contents should be metadata, and normally I'd delete it. In this case, however, all of the data seems to be in there! Is there a tool that I can use to reassemble the original data?

General :: Rename - Extracting Metadata From Flac Header?

Jan 14, 2011

I recently (and accidentally) wiped a hard-drive which should NOT have been formatted. PhotoRec was able to recover some of the most important files from the disk.

Part of those files include a large music collection of flac files. I've placed these in a folder named 'FLAC' that looks like this:

[Start of FLAC Folder]
f11655088.flac
f11698672.flac
... (around 2,000 files total)
f291142600.flac
[End of FLAC Folder]

I'm running a livecd to rescue this data. I have access to a standard terminal in Ubuntu 10.10. I've noticed that the music player in linux will display the song title when I open any of these songs.

My goal is to automatically extract the song title from these files and update their names from f12313512.flac to 'Libera - Rebirth.flac'

General :: Filesystems - Software RAID 1 Without Metadata On The Drives?

Mar 30, 2011

I know I can simply create a degraded raid array and copy the data to the other drive like this: mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 missing /dev/sdb1

But I want the specific disk to keep the raw ext3 filesystem so I can still use it from FreeBSD. When using the command above the disk will be a raid disk and I can't do a mount /dev/sdb1 anymore. A little background info. The drives in question are used as backup drives for a couple of Linux and FreeBSD servers. I am using the Ext3 filesystem to make sure I can quickly recover the data since both FreeBSD and Linux can read from that without problems. If someone has a different solution for that (2 drives in raid 1 that are readable by FreeBSD and writeable by Linux),

General :: Filesystems - Mirror A Directory And Back Up All Metadata?

Aug 20, 2011

I need to backup my home folder (and a few other folders) on an organizational Linux NFS system where my account will be expiring soon, onto a personal hard drive (which is not using a Linux filesystem). I access the account through SSH and SFTP. I want to backup all metadata for these files and directories and everything in them, including dates, owners, groups, UID/GID numbers, CHMOD permissions, etc. How can I go about doing this? Do I need to run the LS command recursively on the directory with certain settings of what information to display, and pipe the results to a file so that the information will be in a file regardless of which filesystem I move it to? Or is there a way to save all the metadata using something like TAR/GZ? If it's with TAR/GZ, then how do I view this metadata on other filesystems that I move the archive to, and will the users/groups stored remain intact as long as it's not extracted?

In addition, do you know how to do this for SELinux metadata and AFS (Andrew File System) metadata too? (These will be for another filesystem later on, but if don't know the answer to either of these, please still answer the above.)

General :: Manage Song Metadata On CentOS From Command Line

Mar 13, 2010

I am making a simple Pandora.com alternative for myself and a few friends where the user can upload his/her songs and listen to them anywhere. My intent is to make a lightweight, simple player in HTML5 so all the user needs is a current Firefox or Chrome to use it. I have set it up so that all uploaded songs get converted to .ogg and added to a database but I also want some metadata (not sure if that is the correct term) for the songs to be stored in the database so the player can tell the user what song he/she is listening too. I know there are several GUI tools for managing the title/artist/album info for songs but I'm having trouble finding any good ones I can use from the command line. If the song has the information already in the file, I think I can use mplayer to retrieve the information but it would be really great if there was one that would look up the song information online.

Latest builds including a few more fixes will hit updates-testing with the next push: [URL]
This time, karma automatism is enabled, so the update will hit the stable updates repo after either +3 votes or after 7 days. Regardless of whether the -freeworld packages are available. Those are being worked on as well, but since RPM Fusion doesn't build their packages against Test Updates, it seems they don't spend the extra effort on pulling the Test Updates into their buildroot and instead wait till those get marked stable.

1] clicking on the icon in the start menu
2] starting it from terminal
3] typing it from run command
I can see the bouncing 'a' for Audacious. It bounces for a few seconds and then disappears and then nothing more happens. I am using Audacious on my 32 bit system [running openSUSE 11.3 KDE 4.4.4 ] and it works just fine.
