Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With XP - 4 Different Partitions - No Success Intalling Ubuntu 10.10?

Nov 22, 2010

For the past 4 days Ive been trying to install ubuntu 10.10 64bit with no success. I am a total newbee when it comes to linux so I will be needing your kind help with it.At first I installed ubuntu to one of my portable drives with no problems, but now I want to install it to my hard drive and have a dual boot between windows XP and Ubuntu.

When I arrive to the manual partitioning part is where I get lost. I have totally destroyed my windows installation 5 times already ( thank god for norton ghost for restoring my windows installation. )

I have read several articles and blog posts regarding a dual boot system with windows and Ubuntu but none of them cover my specific situation so I keep getting lost and screwing things up.

Debian :: Intalling The RTLinux-3.2-wr On 5.0.4?

Jul 27, 2010

My computer has Debian 5.0.4 (with kernel linux-2.6.26-2-AMD) installed. Processor is AMD64 athlon dual-core CPU. I am trying to install RTLinux-3.2-wr. Below is what I did:

1) download a clean kernel : linux-2.6.26.8.tar.gz and patch : patch-2.6.26.8-rt16.gz

2) configure and build the kernel with the patch applied

3) reboot with the new kernel

"uname -r" shows "2.6.26.8-rt16"

4) download and unpack RTLinux-3.2-wr.tar.bz2 into /usr/src/rtlinux-3.2-wr, the execute the following commands:

cd /usr/src/rtlinux-3.2-wr
make menuconfig

I get an error message "Makefile: 66: schedulers/x86/Makefile: No such file or directory", which is caused by line 66 "include schedulers/$(ARCH)/Makefile" in file /usr/src/rtlinux-3.2-wr/Makefile. When I go to directory "/usr/src/rtlinux-3.2-wr/schedulers", I find that there is no "x86" subfolder. The existing four subfolders are "alpha", "i386", "ppc" and "mips" respectively. What should I do to "make menuconfig" successfully?

Ubuntu Networking :: Walkthrough For Intalling A Driver That Is In Tar.gz?

My ubuntu machine has no internet access at all so none of the solutions I'v been able to find that deal with these broadcom drivers will work for me (because they all seem to require internet).

So, maybe someone could point me to a walkthrough for intalling a driver that is in tar.gz?

General :: Grub Boot Loader Installation In Dual Boot Machine After Windows 7 Installation?

Mar 23, 2010

I had a dual boot machine with fedora 12 and windows vista and I could use grub boot-loader to switch between two. Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.

General :: Cannot Boot Window Virtual Machine On OSX

Feb 4, 2010

In order to get the work done I use a Macintosh Macbook Pro (4,1) with a Boot camp partition running Windows 7.This allows me to use my favorite OS (OSX) with my required work environment (Win7 & .Net) when ever I need them.To allow me smooth usage I use Parallels 5 to virtually boot my Win7 machine from within OSX but whenever I want to do some heavy lifting I reboot into Windows 7 (on boot camp) which allows me to use my laptop's entire resources for my work.

My problem is this: I am now about to begin work for a company in Tel Aviv which uses Linux desktops for development and I need to follow suit. So I've given my self a new Quest: Set up the ultimate web development platform. My goal is this-

1. Install the three operating systems one along side the other - OSX, Ubuntu & Windows 7.

2. Set each one of them up in such a way that allows me to boot into it (meaning I can have any one of these OSs running on its own when I want.

3. Use parallels to virtually boot my Win7 partition - this allows me to keep using Office 2007, which I use often.

4. optional! Use parallels to virtually boot the Ubuntu OS also.

I have managed to complete goal 1 & 2.But I simply can't get 3...In theory it isn't a problem to install windows & OSX along side each other and virtually boot the windows under OSX using parallel's bootcamp virtualizer- BUT - the moment I install Linux along side the other two it break's parallel's virtualizer and it can't boot. I think it is due to parallel's in ability to use GRUB but I'm not actually sure about that.

I am considering compromising and going for a system like this:

1. Install OSX and Ubuntu on the laptop - which means I can boot into each of them.

2. Create a virtual machine for Win7 using parallels.

But that will be a real compromise as far as I'm concerned and I hope to find a way to set up the machine as I described earlier (three OSs which can be booted independently and also loaded in VMs).Just to make sure I'm clear - I HAVE MANAGED to install three independent OSs on the same machine - but that always prevents me from booting them as VMs using parallels...

General :: Uninstall Mint 9 From Dual Boot Machine?

Jun 28, 2010

Recently, my Mint update informed me it had an upgraded kernel version of Mint 9 and asked did I want to upgrade. Me, not being an old hand at things Linux, upgraded. Instead of overwriting the older version, it put the upgraded version of Mint 9 BESIDE the older one. So now I have, actually, 4 versions of Mint 9 on my PC,(generic plus recovery mode for each) which is dual booted with Vista Home Premium.

I don't want this. I have had weird problems and hiccups since I upgraded. I want to get rid of the newer kernel version and use only the older one. How do I uninstall the upgraded version of Mint 9? I have tried to boot into the older version, but there is no desktop and I have to type on the boot screen and in the terminal. It wants commands I don't know how to give. How do I restore my older version of Mint 9?

I just want one version on my PC in the dual boot with Windows Vista. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this? If you give me terminal commands, please make sure they are copy and paste ready. lol.

If uninstalling involves deleting partitions and doing a manual partitioning and formatting, I'll need easy instructions for that also.

General :: XORG Freezes Machine In Firefox Right After Boot

Mar 29, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu Intrepid on a Dell laptop. I turn it off at night.Every morning when I turn it back on and open Firefox, I have to wait while the machine is busy/freezes for maybe a minute. This usually happens twice, but sometimes three times. The processor light is on solid when it does this.I've run TOP from the terminal, and it says it's XORG that's running.

This only happens when Firefox is running, and when I first turn on the laptop after it being turned off for a while. Every morning, when I first run Firefox, XORG takes control of the laptop. Not a big deal, but frustrating and worrisome.

General :: Use Kernel To Circumvent Dumb Bios And Get Machine To Boot

Apr 28, 2010

I don't know about you, but I have found the linux kernel to read pretty much any usb drive or sd card, while many bioses, especially, when they are older fail miserably. Now if you got yourself a machine which bios cannot boot from your 16 giga stick, wouldn't it be possible to use linux as kind of a bootstrap, install it on a 1 giga medium, that the bios can boot from and then when the linux kernel is running, give control to the other media that you really want to boot from. This should be doable.

It is basically going from a running kernel and its inird to give control over to another grub or syslinux. Does anybody know if this exists already? Truth is that many bioses are just garbage, old and fail at pretty much all new hardware, so why not use a linux kernel as a crutch, to get away from this old piece of junk? I did similar things already with a software raid, where i had a machine that couldn't boot from a HD that was larger than 150 giga.

I installed a 10 gb HD to put /boot on it and then give control over to some "fancy 21st century technology that can boot from this HUUUGE disks" (as from my dripping from sarcasm voice you can tell that pretty much all BIOSes are a thorn in my side and a P.I.T.A. for me, too often they only do 30% of what I expect them to)

Hardware :: Machine Will Hang Before It Gets To The Ubuntu "boot" Screen With The Dots That Show Progress As The Machine Boots?

Oct 1, 2010

I have a roughly 3-year old PC that I put together from parts (listed below) that has been running great with various flavors of Linux as the sole operating system. It is currently running Ubuntu 10.4. A couple of months ago, it started to have intermittent problems booting. The machine will hang before it gets to the Ubuntu "boot" screen with the dots that show progress as the machine boots. If I look at the power on messages from the BIOS, it fails at different points in the process - sometimes during the memory test, sometimes during the search for IDE drives. It fails about 2 out of every 5 attempts to boot. It sometimes takes 2-3 tries at booting before it actually works. Sometimes when it does boot, the Ethernet jack doesn't work and I see errors in syslog about there not being a carrier.

There are no syslog entries when the machine does not boot. The machine is plugged into a UPS. The UPS indicates that it is running at 13% of capacity at 123V/60Hz. I'm in the US.Once the machine boots normally, it will stay up without issues for days.I've checked the 4GB of RAM (I added 2GB to the original 2GB several months ago) using the memory testing application on the System Rescue CD and no errors were found.I've replaced the motherboard battery, which seemed to help for a few weeks, but then the problem returned.I've checked the hard drive for errors using the SMART diagnostics tool in System -> Administration -> Disk Utility and buy running fsck. The interior of the case is not very dusty and all the fans appear to be working. Are there things I can do to investigate and fix this issue other than starting to replace components - starting with the motherboard and the power supply? The parts of the machine:

When I do the machine gets to the Grub menu, then it starts booting and the text starts moving up the screen. Then it goes to a small blinking cursor at the top left corner and stays there. The T61 had an Nvidia card, the T400 has the switchable Intel/ATI. I went in the BIOS and told it to boot using the Intel only but no go. I'm thinking that Grub needs configging to see my new hard drive but I don't know how to do that.
