I have 4 OSes installed:
Windows XP on sda1
Backtrack on sda5-6
Ubuntu 11.04 on sda7-8
Ubuntu 10.10 on sda9-10
I want to remove Ubuntu 11.04 (partitions sda7-8). I tried using GParted from Ubuntu 10.10, but it says that I have to unmount logical partitions with a number higher than the one being removed.
I have a laptop dual booting to Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. However, I'd like to switch to a different Linux distro (probably Ubuntu, that's what I'm used to)
Is there a way for me to do it without losing the Windows 7 setup/data?
How do I do this at my modem page?

At the moment I have Windows XP professional together with Linux Ubuntu and I want to keep using Ubuntu. When I do the clean install for Windows 7 Professional, does it leave the multi-bootloader in place? If not, what should I do to bring the multiboot-loader back? I have a CD of Ubuntu 9.10.2.6.31.14. My installed Ubuntu is version 9.10.2.6.31.18.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 500G disk and want to setup it as a test machine with many partitions.
The first partition is for Windows XP. It works. I use USB disk to boot Ubuntu, so I can use Ubuntu's command dd to backup my XP partition.
Than I set more than 10 partitions. Then Ubuntu booted from USB does not always work. It always boots, but when I open a terminal, I get funny characters.. It seems the problem is something to do with number or size of partitions.
Is there a limit for number of partitions or size of partitions?
I know this is a familiar looking question, but please hear me out.
I want to dual boot Fedora 15 with Ubuntu 11.04 (to try out GNOME Shell whilst not breaking Unity, which I quite like). As it's mostly to just to try out, I'll probably want to remove Fedora and go back to just Ubuntu, so I wan to ask how to remove the Fedora partition without doing any damage, and how to remove it from the GRUB menu at boot.
I am trying to install a box here where my /storage partition is about 2.5T.I had setup the partitioning with suse, while testing, and all worked well.Now when trying to install CentOs 5.5 it gives me an error, that my boot partition is on a gpt partition and this machine cannot boot that.Also I don't see the option to create XFS partitions from the installer.Can 5.5 support GPT @ install time?

Once I get my system fixed and before consuming alcohol that is.Short version:I thought Id be smart and mount the /home partition I use for openSUSE as /home for Fedora, I mean that why I made /home it own partition right? Well, thatwhen the alcohol took over and I thought I be rilliant(not so much) and just use my SUSE username for Fedora too, since, you know,e already got all my files and settings stored there.

What is the best way to determine in Linux if a multi-processor machine is overloaded? I thought load was a good measure but I run a large number of tasks which don't consume a lot of CPU but which drive up the load. A 4 processor machine has a load of 66 right now according to top for example but mpstat reports that the all CPU idle time is 89%.

For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?

1st partition - Slackware Main OS
2nd partition - Arch Linux

the 120Gb hard drive i intend to do a /home2 for movies, etc. Is that order above the best or i could make swap as 2nd partition
i have been out of the ubuntu loop for several months due to a motherboard problem. i am going to be getting a new 64 laptop for christmas, with a dual core intel processor and windows 7 home premium as the OS.
i am looking forward to having my own computer again will be installing ubuntu on it. but, before i install ubuntu, i would like to know how to remove ubuntu and return the new computer to its original state if it ever becomes necessary.
i was comforatable using programs such as mbrfix along with gparted to accomplish this task with my old computer, but that was a 32 bit windows xp machine.
will i be able to use these programs with my new laptop? i'm unfamiliar with 64 bit systems, windows 7 etc. and how they may differ from the older computer that i was used to.
I downloaded an raw SD card image that has two partitions. It caused some file system errors when I tried to dd it directly into an SD card. I am not sure if the card is defective or the image. Is there a way to examine this image without writing it to a physical card? Like trying to mount the partitions separately or checking the tables?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've done a lot of searching on this but haven't found a concise solution to my issue. Maybe there isn't one. A little history first: I installed using WUBI. I had already shrunk my Windows partition (using Windows disk management) and created a partition for Ubuntu and for swap space. I thought WUBI would give me a chance to choose the partition for installing but I was mistaken (I should mention I'm a bit of a n00b).
Anyway, after running Ubuntu for a while from the WUBI install I did an Ubuntu update and GRUB got corrupted. I had to use my Windows XP disk to repair my MBR. No big deal. But at this point I decided it was time to do a REAL Ubuntu install on the partition I'd created for it.
Now we get to the part where I have issues. I think I need to create a boot partition for GRUB somewhere in the very early part of the drive. This is because my machine is old and has the BIOS issue where the boot sector must be in the first 1024 cylinders of the drive. Of course, Microsoft has taken that space and I don't know how to insert a new partition without hosing my Windows install. I also have a large data partition that I don't want to lose. It's SDA5 in the list below. I think there's also an issue with the number of partitions I have. I think I can only add logical partitions.

I am trying to create a multi-partition USB key to use to kick multiple OS's whenever I need (1 NTFS partition for Windows image and data storage, one ext3 for boot, another ext3 for Linux distros iso storage and the last one as a Fedora live usb with permanent storage).
I am using a Kingston Data Traveler G2 16GB usb key and I have absolutely no problem to create the partitions and all looks fine. The problem I encounter is that although I can format the 1st partition on the usd key to any fs I want, I am unable to do the same on the other partitions. I tried fdisk+mkfs.XXX (ext2, ext3, fat, vfat, ntfs) and gparted, and no luck.
mkfs.XXX gives me no errors when I run it but when I try to mount the partition in Fedora 14 the OS is unable detect the fs. Gparted allows me to format the fs, gives no errors, shows a format successful message, but when it re-scans the device the fs appears as unknown.
I know it is possible to do this as I had a DataTraveler 101 16GB and it was working fine until I lost it.
I have 10.10 installed on a Compaq laptop and want to set it up as a dual boot machine. I'm not sure how to 1) set up another partition 2) set up the dual boot and 3) install my second operating system. I'm sure that this is a pretty vanilla thing to do and am frustrated after trying to find out how to do it for a bit now.

When I restarted my computer, it now gives me the grub rescue> prompt (unknown filesystem). I tried to run the Ubuntu Live CD to fix my problems from the command line, but it will not boot from CD giving me: "Buffer I/O error on device fd0,logical block 0)
View 3 Replies View RelatedProblem: I have installed two Ubuntu servers, 10.04 32-bit and 10.10 64-bit, in a multi-boot environment (also have FDOS and WinXPsp3). The 64-bit will not boot because grub can't find the UUID for the disk with the 64-bit system.
Brief Background: Installed 10.04 LTS two months ago with no problems. 10.04 is in a primary partition on hda with FDOS.
Installed 10.10 (64-bit) in a new primary partition on the same hd. The install seemed to go ok, but the MBR and the fs on the 10.04 were corrupted; could not boot. Restored drive, and rebuilt grub.
Installed 10.10 on separate hd (hdb). In grub step all OS's were recognized so I pointed the grub to hda. Grub failed to boot.
Rebuilt grub from 10.04 on hda. All systems recognized but 10.10 will not boot because it says it cannot locate the UUID specified.
Compared the grub.cfg for both systems, the UUID specified for hdb is the same. Also, when I mount the drive for 10.10 on the 10.04 system the drive UUID is consistent.
I know I must be missing some thing, but I know not what. Have searched and can't find any clues. All other OS's boot ok.
Hardware: AMD64 4GB, 2 internal IDE drives (hda and hdb), 1 internal SATA (hdc WinXP), various USB and Firewire Drives (no bootable systems).
I have windows xp on dual boot, however I do not use it anymore also something happened to the boot sector so now it wont work. I want to remove it so that I can have ubuntu reclaim the partition and have grub removed from startup. How does one do this?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have installed FC12 on a system that previously had FC9, (My dads PC) So far everything is great (except adobe flash ), however when i installed it I erroneously assumed it would use the old /home folder, I think I miss interpreted what I read during install. the old data is still on the disk but I cannot mount it because it contains a boot partition. I tried to use GParted to modify the old partition but was unable to modify LVM???
How can I remove the old boot partition and rename the folder so I can mount it and access the files on it. There was nothing really important lost, it would just save me a lot of time if I could access the files.

I'm trying to get an understanding of( building RPM packages) and how to get a program to run on Linux. The only info I have found is about AutoTools but not what AutoTools actually does. If I knew how to manually install an application I would know how AutoTools works. Putting in environmental variables and configuring an AutoTools program does not explain what it does.

Just installing a dist and then another one after it will replace the GRUB boot screen every time, and some dists might override previous GRUB menus entirely.
On a previous machine I created a GRUB partition which chain-loads GRUB for each dist, but now I can't remember how I did it.
The hard drive is currently empty, since I started playing around with repartitioning. What is the easiest way to install GRUB to a partition? Links are welcome, but please no generic "install GRUB" guides because the ones I've found haven't been relevant to my particular situation (empty hard drive, multi boot environment, no CD/floppy)..
I am currently booting 4 flavors of Linux - Ubuntu 10.04, Xubuntu 10.04, Linux Mint 9 KDE RC and Linux Mint 9 Gnome. There is so little difference between Ubuntu Gnome with the right packages installed and Linux Mint 9 it is redundant and I would like to replace it with Fedora 13 and try that out for a while. I understand that Fedora still uses a legacy Grub while the others are all using Grub2. I also understand that the two bootloaders do not get along. Is there a way to do that? How? If I have Fedora install its legacy Grub to the Fedora partition will Grub2 see Fedora and update itself properly? I'm open to starting clean if that would simplify things.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Linux Mint and Windows 7 installed on my laptop, and recently tried tinkering with EasyBCD, to use the Windows multi-boot loader instead of grub. Well, that didn't work out too well, because I ended up with the Windows boot loader with two options, Windows 7 and Linux Mint, however the Linux Mint entry just redirected me to grub, which wasn't what I intended.
I tried to put things the way they were, with grub as the only boot loader, and figured I'd do so by setting EasyBCD to skip the multi boot screen and going straight to the Linux Mint entry, which corresponds to grub.Well, now when I boot, I get the grub screen, but if I select the Windows 7 entry, it just redirects me back to grub, so I can't access Windows 7 right now. What can I do to fix this? Can I edit the Windows boot loader from within Linux?

I want to remove Virtual Machine and I have deleted VM folder from hd. It's still shown in the VirtualBox GUI but the settings are grayed out.
