View 2 RepliesI had to reformat my hard drive because I was trying to run windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10 on the same drive which caused many problems. After re-installing ubuntu 10.10 alone I noticed that I no longer had access to any of the "Places" sub menus, Home folder through Ubuntu one.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed ubuntu maverick a couple days ago, total newbie. After trying to install some software I no longer can access any of the Places folder and get an error - file not found.
I can open Computer, partitions and devices, just not the first 7 folders which i think are bookmarks.
Thanks for helping, U.
Ok, I eventually solved it. Appears I had inadvertently selected another program as default folder openenr. Just opening any folder with right click - open with - folder openenr reassigned nautilus and opens Places folders ok.
How can I add Home Folder launcher available in the Places menu to the panel?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSuddenly, my "Places --> Desktop" folder is identical to my "Places --> Home Folder". This happened by accident somehow, and the folders and files in my Home Folder "/home/rj" are displayed on my desktop, and I don't want them to be.
When I click on "Places --> Desktop" it's as if I've clicked on "Places --> Home Folder" (the "File Browser" directory opens, the location is set at "/home/rj", and the title at the top is "File Browser").
Elementary stuff for a lot of you, I'm sure, but I'm blanking on how the Desktop folder can be restored to what I'd like it to be (basically empty, except for a "Downloads" folder), and my folders and files kept off the actual desktop (except for the "Downloads" folder).
I am having this odd problem since I did a clean install of Maverick. I installed Exaile music player but after that when I click on 'Home folder' (or any subfolder in it) under 'Places' menu Exaile pops up instead.I uninstalled exaile for a while and everything worked fine but reinstalling it caused the same problem again.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have a problem with th home folder button. When I click the button from the drop down ''PLACES'' menu i get this "Error File not found'' but if i go to places>computer>home folder, then it opens. If i type in ''CWD" i get this "/home/piepie''.so the home folder does exist, and if i type /home/piepie is a directory.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was trying to view a dvd on ubuntu (which works on windows) so I downloaded a few progams from the synapatic manager and software center - nothing made the dvd work but now when I go to "places" and "home folder" movie player opens and has a error message window that is at least 10 deep that says "could not open location; you might not have permission to open file." I can't get to home folder at all!Did I totally ruin Ubuntu? Is this fixable? I rebooted and that didn't help
View 3 Replies View RelatedHiI still have a issue where nautilus occasionally wont show my home folder's contents.
(it has no images or videos or music in the home folder directly (only in sub-folders), only other folders and text files, incl dot files for settings)
I have to reboot to get it to work.
Sometimes it does it right after a reboot, a 2nd reboot then allows nautilus to see contents of the home folder.

I'm setting up a Linux machine thet'll be shared by several users, some of whom will be admins. Is there a way to restrict access to a user's home folder (encrypt or block completely) for other regular/admin users?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try and open any of the files that are in "Places" instead of opening them it opens my Appearance preferences instead. It was happening with everything in the Home folder to start off with (so that's desktop, documents, music, videos, pictures and downloads) and now it's spread to the icons for my windows filesystem and Computer. When I click on the windows filesystem it opens Appearance preferences but it still mounts the drive so I can access my folders by clicking on the desktop icon that appears but I'd prefer if I could access them through "Places" in my top panel.

After installing Fedora next to Ubuntu with a common home-folder, I've had troubles with many different things. When I finally fixed grub2 so I could display all the OSs available, I tried to boot Ubuntu. Then I got three messages, one telling me .ICEauthority wasn't able to upgrade. I've now realized it was because my user in Ubuntu didn't own the home-folder. I typed "sudo chown -R jp:jp /home/jp/" in a shell, and it worked. But when I then logged into fedora, I got the same error messages, so I had to type "su -c chown -R jp:jp /home/jp". Apparently, jp in Fedora isn't the same user as jp in Ubuntu.
How do I make my home folder owned by both?
I can't access the home folder. sudo nautilus in Terminal returned this message:
Quote:
'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error Permission denied.
You do not have permission to create a usershare. Ask your administrator to grant you permissions to create a share.Or something to that effect. When Nautilus opened, the screen showed a generic root folder and the only icon was Desktop. Some research led me to install Samba, which reduced the error message.
I had issues on my last install , I couldn't boot into it cause I accidentally uninstalled python 2.6 and everything it was attached to. View 7 Replies View RelatedI think something is wrong with Nautilus... I have Ubuntu 10.10, and everytime I click on Places on the top bar, and then one of my home folders it opens up a terminal, for every folder. The only way I can access my home folders and such is to open a terminal and type nautilus, I have tried everything, what is going on??
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy latest problem: (Ubuntu 10.04)My "pictures" folder is missing from the "Places" menu. It used to be there....I didn't do anything...but now it's gone. I liked having it there- I can access that folder through "home folder" but it was nice having it where I could get to it with just one click. How can I get it back? (There is no option to edit the places menu in the "edit menus" thingie)
View 5 Replies View RelatedI can't access my home folder using nautilus ( and everything that using gui), but I easily can access to subfolders e.g. "Music", "Downloads" and others. What can cause this trouble?
Also I can retrieve directory listing using terminal.
Ubuntu and am using the 64bit version of Ubuntu 10.04.Now I can access the folders in my home folder through the places GUI, but I can't access them in the terminal. When I begin typing in the terminal and press tab it does not autocomplete, and typing the directory manually says that there is no such file or directory, even though when I type dir or ls they are clearly there.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm still running 9.10, but now would like to install 10.10. Now I'm wondering about how to keep access to my encrypted home folder.
Usually, I don't do an 'upgrade', but a fresh re-install. I have a separate /home partition, so normally this works just fine. However, my home directory is encrypted (a feature that was introduced with 9.10, I believe).
So, if I whack the system partition and do a fresh reinstall there, will the new install still be able to read my home directory? Or do I need to save a key file from somewhere?
I've done something a bit stupid. I've already encrypted my home folder and just set it to log in without requesting my password. When i do log in now, no startup sound plays, several error messages appear but no desktop. I think it's because I now don't have an opportunity to enter my home folder password, and it doesn't work at all. Is there any way to edit account settings from 'root' or anything because this really has crippled my computer.
View 2 Replies View Relatedcomputer running ubuntu 10.10 is failing to boot and I want to access the private data in the home folder in order to recover data onto another disk. How do I go about doing this? As far as I can remember its not encrypted but am still unable to access the data to backup.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't access any of the sub-folders or files in my home folder on Ubuntu. I've checked the folder associations, that doesn't seem to be the issue. I've also opened the mimeapps.list file and the inode/directory association seems fine - inode/directory=nautilus-folder-handler.desktop;
I'm running Intrepid (8.10) (please don't ask me to upgrade! ) and the issue started after using Qtpfsgui 1.9.3 a couple of time to create HDR images. I guess Qtpfsgui broke an association somewhere, but where? I can access other folders, on Computer and Filesystem, but not on my home folder.
I installed Fedora 12 a couple of days ago. This is my secondary operating system. The main one is Mint 8 and in order to have the same documents in both OSs I have a separate /home partition, but for some reason I don't see any of my Documents. In the installation I told fedora that I already had a /home partition and to use it. Also if I mount Mint's disk, while I can browse the folders, I can't see any document .
Finally I can access my Mint's home folder and files but since my username in fedora has a capital A it created another home folder. How can I change my home folder path so it point to the other home folder?
I have a 160gb Hard Drive, I partitioned like this:
1. First partition 16GB, ext4, mounted / I have my Lucid filesystem on this partition and boot flagged.
2. Second partition 112GB (extended- 110gb as /home, and 2gb as swap memory)
My disk list:
Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 1946 15631213+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 1947 15647 110053282+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 1947 2274 2634628+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda6 2275 15647 107418591 83 Linux
I have my system upgraded from Karmic 9.04 (automatic distro upgraded), but I have too many problems with this upgrade, (nvidia video card not working properly, I can't mount my mp3 player (sansa), and another issues with sounds, etc.) Since I have a separate /home partition, and separate / partition, I would like to do a fresh install of lucid on my first partition (/dev/sda1), thinking of maybe it will fix all my problems with a fresh install from a Lucid CD,
My questions are:
1. If I do a fresh install on /, will I be able to access my home folder on the extended partition?.
2. If I do a fresh install on /, the Lucid installer will recognise my /home partition, or will install everything again?. (meaning another home folder), I don't want 2 home folder,
3. Am I going to have a permission problems between the fresh install and all my stuff in /home partition?
I logged in to Recover Mode ("Drop to root shell prompt") this morning to do something. Naturally, I wanted access to my encrypted home folder.
The README file says to run ecryptfs-mount-private. However, that command returns an error:
"ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly."
This cannot be correct, because if I log in normally, I get my home folder without any problem.
How can I access my encrypted home folder when I boot via Recover Mode?
i installed my desktop environment from synaptic manager! so when i restarted my computer i couldn't log into the desktop environment. How can i recover from this? Also, how can i access my home folder from a live cd?
