I'd like to know what solutions do you, people, use to backup a live system that acts as a small home mail/file/irc/web server and some other purposes. For example, right now, to backup the mail, I have to stop fetchmail, kill vixie-cron to avoid any problem and then do the backup. Then restart vixie-cron.I wonder if there's any solution that will leave me do the backup without all this hassle.

I currently have a centos 4.4 I believe running with a 250GB hard drive. I want to make an image of that hard drive. I have tried removing the drive and connecting it to my windows pc using an adapter that would allow my windows machine run the hard drive as it was a regular external hard drive. Of course windows doesn't reconize that drive since it is linux partitioned. I am thinking that I need to have the hard drive inthe box I am wanting to copy and put in a blank drive in the box that I want to copy to. And boot from a live CD and use cat or dd to copy it. I have seen the commands before bust I am thinking this is the only way. Basically I am wanting to have a duplicate of the drive and build a whole new server that is already all setup.I will just change the host name and assign it another Public facing UP. Is this correct? Oh, and the new server will have different hardware. Might even be AMD or intel different from source or destination.

As you can see, total disk usage is about 5GB. I can transfer that to another server on the network.What would be the best way to perform a complete backup without stopping the server and how could I restore that backup in case of emergency ? After browsing the entire Web, I couldn't find the answer that would make my life easy, so I give it a try here
I am looking for a piece of hardware that would be able to run Linux and act as a web, subversion and file server. Ideally it shouldn't have any fans, because it will be in the middle of my living room, the computing power needs are minimal. I would be grateful for recommendations.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThrough the Black Friday shuffle of getting new hardware, I now have a 500TB external drive, a 1TB external drive, and an old computer I want to set up as a home server. My family has a lot of photos that are currently stored on many different computers and are not backed up, I want 500gb of space for photos, and for those photos to be backed up. That would leave the other half of the 1TB drive for assorted things like personal backups, and general file storage. I know enough how to set up Ubuntu server edition on the computer, but the options on how I can set up the storage is stumping me.
To Recap, I have 1.5TB of storage total split 1TB/500GB. I want 500GB to be used for a central storage for the 10+ computers in my house(mostly using Windows) and that 500GB would be automatically backed up. The 500GB that's left would be used for non critical files, and wouldn't be backed up.
What is the best way of backing up the files? (script once a day that copies files? Some backup program?)
Would the 500gb drive be best for backing up to(having the 1TB be where people would put the pictures) or the other way around? Does it really matter?
Any tips on the cleanest way to have this work cleanly with Windows, Linux, and Mac? How well do photo programs(Picasa, Shotwell, iPhoto) like a setup like this? Is it possible to have different programs on different machines all reference the same file system without their automatic sorting(to folders, usually by date) messing each other up?
I'm trying to setup a server at home, it has some practical implications, but largely it is just to take a stab at it. But I need the help of someone with more experience than I in defining exactly what I'm looking to do.
Here's what I have: old PC running Gutsy server connected to router. Several laptops at home connected via wifi to router. All laptops running either Windows or Ubuntu. Here's what I'm looking for: The server centralizes file storage for all clients. I would likely incorporate a RAID and some synchronised imaging of the files. I also want the server to create disk images of the clients hdd, regardless of client OS.There would also be some shares that would be publicly accessible (myself and friends accross the country would be able to access the same drive).
So I was thinking something like what corporate environment would be nice, you log into a profile that exists on the server. Like a dumb client...all data would be stored on the server. But I'm thinking that's more like a network boot and wouldn't work via wifi (or would it?). Also that wouldn't lend itself well to laptops used on the road in areas without net access. now I'm thinking each client would have its own locally installed OS, and they would just access networked shares. I could store sensitive files on the shares, but that wouldn't provide complete backup solution for each client.
Without rambling on anymore, anyone care to throw out some ideas? I'm really just looking to see if I can do what I want. The focus is on centrallizing files, securley backing up data and client OS's and ability to restore said images quickly.

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 server x64 and have got apache running.
I am looking for the simplest more robust solution for smtp, pop3 and imap. I have only ever used qmail before and found it a pain to configure and its getting old so I though I should probably try something new. I have not much experience with running pop3 or imap on linux so would love a suggestion on that.
I would like to create a bash menu script for my home server For instance if i were to type ./script It would then bring up 3 options
a. Create a backup
b. Restore files from a backup
c. Quit
If you were to select a or b it should then ask you were you want to backup or restore from. And if i were to type in an incorrect letter i should get an error and take me back to menu. I have attepmted this a view time now and have magaged to get the menu up using parameters
At work we have a linux based ip phone system. Now this system was buggy for a bit but we now have it working perfectly. As it is we clone this hard drive and on backup I clone it back. This works but if for whatever I'm not in the office the backup can't go through because apparently no one can read the VERY simple instructions. What i would like to do is burn a cd with a copy of the hard drive (this configuration will change once every 6-12 months at maximum) as well as a VERY minimal linux install.
The goal is they stick the cd in and reboot. The system loads the super minimal linux then it runs a batch file that clones the portion of the CD that has the hard drive onto the system then it asks the nice moron....err....person...to remove the cd and reboot All I need is a a bootable system to a bash script that will run live from cd. I can make the nice bash script that puts to the screen a nice ascii graphic telling the lucky sap it's running and to come back in a little bit to make sure it's done.
iam trying to sync file server data into backup server machine by command- rsync -avu path/of/data ipaddress-of-backup-server:/path/where/to/save after running it ask for root password and manually it is successful.but i want to make it automatic.for that i also tried cronjob and also generated authentication key but iam not successful in login automatically..anybody know how to authenticate root to login for storing data in backup server.

The laptop will continue to be used by another member of my family but the desktop will no longer have any use (well I might later build a new desktop but this one has finished his service).

I have access to all Windows Versions since XP/2003 (with the exception of Windows Home Server) and I have some knowledge using both Windows and Linux so that's not a problem on my choice.

This server will have Vsftp, VPN, Samba stuff , many other added packages +many printers, many users + data. I know I can use tar for the data /u no problem. 1. I was testing tar on the /home directory on a few user directories. I then created a new directory and did a restore of the users directories on it. I noticed the /home/user owner and group were root. The files in each directory remained the same. This gave me concern. If I had a crash and had to restore these to a new HD. I would have to change these, what else would I need to change? 2. Since I have many config files, how do I back up them? I know I can do a dump, but then users shouldn't be on the system. The system files will change as they add users, printers, etc, and asking users to not work, is not really an option while dump is running. I thought I could do a tar on whole system. (cron late at night .. not as many users) Then in event of crash of HD.
1. Boot from live cd
2. format the new drive
3. tar back in the whole system
Will this work right? Is there something I am missing?

Does anyone know of any decent enterprise level backup solutions for Linux? I need to backup a few servers and a bunch of desktops onto one backup server. Using rsync/tar.gz won't cut it. I need like bi-monthly full HDD backups, and things such as that, with a nice GUI interface to add/remove systems from the backup list. I need basically something similar to CommVault or Veritas. Veritas I've used before but it has its issues, such as leaving 30GB cache files. CommVault, I have no idea how much it is, and if it supports backing up to a hard drive rather than tape.

It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible.My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet.The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.
In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. My office uses a local Linux server running Red Hat 6.1 for an ancient text-based accounting program. The client computers (about 5 or so) run WinXP pro and use Tinyterm emulator to log in to the server. One of the client computers (we'll call it client1) had a user in Windows configured to do scheduled backups of the Linux server. The office worker for client1 was instructed to log in to xp as the backup user and leave the pc on all night and it would backup the linux server, then it would copy that backup to an external hard drive, attached to client1.
The c: hard drive on client1 died and no backups were available. I have restored the computer with a fresh xp install, but I have no idea what method was used to back the server up. I'm sure samba was used but I cannot find any documentation or instructions left behind by whoever set the system up. I have the ip address of the server and have restored tinyterm to be able to log in from client1. I also have access to the command line on the server. I just need help with being able to back the linux server up from a windows xp client.

Webmin - Check, ftps-fileZilla - Check, Apache -It Works BUT I cant seam to set up Apache as a named server using Bind DSN. Tried most of the help in the fourms and ..... I have one server at home, connected through a router that gives me a static IP:192.168.1.2 - My PC192.168.1.3 - CentOS serverI enabled the port 80 into router forwarding system and I can connect properly to CentOS server, using the IP my internet provider gives me. My router automatically forwards a changed IP to my dyndns.com account so I can also access the server through a domain name (I pay to have it linked to one of my domains).My next step is to configure the mail server (dovecot) , so I can send emails from my local server(192.168.1.3).I was wondering if anyone has any tutorial links or tips to have the mail server configured through a home internet provider + home router.

I have a home DNS server that has been working for some time today. Today I restarted to restarted it to clear the cache on it and now it refuses to answer and requests. Named starts fine with no errors. Here is named config file that worked for about 2 weeks fine and now doesn't want to work.

I installed vsftpd server in one of my servers using "yum install vsftpd" command. NFS server is running in the other server and mounted as "/data" in this FTP server. root in FTP server has also root authority in NFS server. All the files and sub-folders under "/data" in FTP server have 755 or 766 mode. Even I modified vsftpd setting to allow root login.
When I login as root to FTP server with FileZilla client, I can see all the file list in root home directory and move to /data directory. I can download any file in a local HDD but I can not download any file in /data directory.
using Back In Time to backup my home directory to a second hdd that is mounted at /media/backupThe trouble is, I can do this using Back In Time (Root), but not using Back In Time without the root option. This is definitely a permissions issue - it can't write to the folder, but when I checked by right clicking on the backup directory and looking at the permission tab, it said I was the owner
