General :: 10.04 Suitable For Working On For Web Development?

Jun 3, 2010

Im just wondering what everyone's experiences are with the latest Ubuntu 10.04 version? Is it stable enough for a working environment? I require it for web development, so using VMs, IDEs, connecting to VPNs, SSH to servers, etc. Im currently using 9.04 and found 9.10 unstable and problematic at times (such as problems connecting to VPN)

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: VLC Stop Working - No Suitable Decoder Module

Nov 24, 2010

Every time I try to reproduce a MKV file I get the following error:
No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "h264". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

This was working a few days ago with no issues. I think stop working after the last update (not 100% sure). I have tried to uninstall and installed back again, but didn't work.

General :: No Suitable Decoder Modules?

Feb 16, 2010

Okay, so far nothing seems to have worked. I have OpenSuSE 11.0 and due to a failed mother board and hard drive had to reinstall it. Since the reinstall I have not been able to play .wmv files. I can play the same file just fine on my laptop but not on my desktop.I have win32codecs installed as well as libdvdcss and several other packages and still I cannot play these files with the following:

Kaffeine
Mplayer
VLC Player

I have searched and everything points to win32codecs (which are installed and the same version as I have on my laptop). I have tried deleting all the video player files including win32codecs, libdvdcss and their config files then reinstalling and that doesn't seem to have worked at all either. So I don't know what else to do.

General :: Windows - Version For General Use + Interface Development?

Jun 6, 2011

II'm a front-end web developer, I've always developed on Windows with technologies like XHTML, CSS, Javascript and Flash, I've dabbled with PHP and MySQL. I am well used to Windows workflows and tools, from Photoshop to Notepad++, Filezilla and WAMP server stacks to After Effects, and a swathe more - but always on Windows.I'm at a point where I think I need to start seriously developing on a Linux box, specifically at the moment to create web apps based on Node.js, but compiling tools and programs has become a task I'm more frequently required to do.

My question? I need to get my hands on a user-friendly install of Linux, but which one? I need common interface developer tools (lists welcome) to replace... well as many tools I have on Windows as possible.I need to be readily connected to the internet, I need OS updates to not destroy my workflow by crashing the OS, as I've seen Ubuntu do to various friends. I want efficiency, I need to be able to customise what I need to in order to perform development tasks.I guess this could be a long list, but - I don't have practical working knowledge of the Linux OS, nor how it "compares" to Windows (excuse my faux pas). I'm obviously willing to learn, but I'm far, far more keen to just... continue interface development, just on Linux instead of Windows.

General :: Win7 - Tools Required For Web Development Project

Jan 16, 2011

I wanted to design a project in linux which could contain programming languages(C, perl, PHP, HTML, XML etc) basically a web based project. Why I have chosen to build on Linux is because it is Open Source, and lot many things can be automated through scripting languages, which in windows I don't know. So, I have installed linux on a virtual machine(Host-Windows 2007 & Guest Linux CentOS), CentOS(command line interface). Since I am a beginner, so I want to know what all tools can be used to facilitate and ease my development process. Some which I know are listed below:

1) Using Putty so that can access the Linux machine from anywhere within the network.
2) Since I want to develop on Linux, but want to use windows as developing platform. So have downloaded Eclipse Editor (C/PHP) on windows. But want to know how can I access linux files from here?
3) Installed Samba, and still trying to figure out how can I access linux files remotely on Windows.
4) How can I ease my development process and what all tools I can use..??

General :: Best Suited Distro For Hardware - Software Development ?

Apr 26, 2011

I'm looking for some advice on choosing the proper distribution for building a hardware/software development environment.

My main field of interest would be:
- HDL (VHDL mainly)
- FPGA/CPLD (synthesis, simulation etc)
- CSystemC
- Tcl scripting
- network hardware applications development (FPGA-based network processors i.e.)

Key (or nice to have at least) system features would be:
- large, stable and willing to help community (especially the large developer part of which would be welcomed)
- support for wide spectrum of development tools (proprietary and open source)
- bunch of docs, tutorials, guides, hints for devel's

As far as my online research went, I've manage to shorten it down to 3 favorites:
- Debian
- Fedora/CentOS
- Gentoo

General :: Perl Useful In System Administration And Application Development On UNIX?

Sep 11, 2010

It is just a general discussion on "How Can Perl Be Useful in System Administration and Application Development on UNIX and Linux Platforms"? I am doing pretty much well with Bash and PHP. In fact, I am learning and experimenting in depth in those two domains. The project that I am working for these days has several scripts which are written in Perl and Ksh. They interact with Ab Initio graphs and perform extensive jobs. Anyways, my current role doesn't require me to have knowledge of Perl but I don't see any harm in learning something new.

So, before I take it, I want to know how Perl can help me and what I can do with it as a UNIX / Linux System Administrator and Application Developer? I just looked at some of its keywords, functions, and commands. Perl Variables are identical to those of PHP. Conditional Statements, Loops, etc. are also much the same as found in any other computer languages. So, at first glance, I have got this feel that it wouldn't be much difficult for me to learn it. But what do you say? Do I really need Perl when I am focusing on PHP and Bash?

General :: Recommended Directory Structure For Application System Development?

Apr 27, 2010

I have to set up my development environment under OEL 5.4. The internal directory structure is more or less fixed, the question is where to put the whole application tree in standard FHS for the development phase. For production, the system will be deployed on a server where data is kept with an Oracle 11g database. Development goes with JDeveloper which has its own internal application/project directory structure; however, I whould like to be independent from this. Unfortunately, by carefully studying the web for FHS, if I will adhere to it I only find ready-made packages to put under /opt, for example. No development aspects are mentioned. make some proposal, possibly with respect to best practices.
