And also I don't want additional software which takes up lot of space but still would like to have the graphical environment.

I have recently got tired of Windows and now trying to switch to Linux Kubuntu. how to download TCC for Linux, but I'm not able to use it. I used to add two right click menu entries(at WinXP) - Compile, and Compile and Run. Is there a way I can do it with Linux, for the .C format?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been looking around the web and forums for a while for the best way to set up a development office. I havent really found many specifics. I am with a new company is just starting to really take their development services seriously. We've added a couple developers and designers in the last month. I am trying to figure out a the best way to set up our environment.
We have a couple dedicated virtual servers with Media Temple. Currently, we develop everything under a subdomain of a domain we set up for development. When the site is ready to go live we move the site to its own domain. I cant believe this is the best way to go about things. So, what do you guys suggest as a setup? Software, versioning, etc. We have the ability to setup a test server in house and then push out changes to the production server but not really sure if that is needed.
We do mainly Wordpress development. If this should be posted in another area,
I would like to install a very light linux distribution. Light enough to be an host running virtualbox (or vmware player) and then a linux virtual machine of choice on it. Occasionally I could be in needs of running a windows distribution.
The reason why I would like to do this is that I am a developer. I found much convenient to prepare my development environment and run it from machine to machine. Rather than reinstalling a distribution and set it up each time I buy a new laptop.
Do you think it's possible ? The alternative could be to make a kind of linux image and install on a brand new PC, but I don't know how to do that and what are the downside of it.
I was trying to setup a cross-platform development environment with qt, an thus looked for the qt-sdk package I used to install on my 32-bit machine. This package appears to have been deleted from 64-bit ubuntu maverick, but I do not understand the details...
- Has this package been renamed, or is there another one in place of it?
- Is this package going to be available again in the future?
PS: I am aware that one can install the sdk by downloading the installer, but for unattended install I prefer the apt package...
I have a macbook, but I am very much interested in writing device drivers in linux. Currently, I have a debian os installed. I dual booted my mac book. Is there any way, I can work on linux source code in mac book and do the needed development.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to upgrade the infrastructure in our office (small web development shop). I'm going to buy a small floor standing rack and in it we will have a dedicated firewall / VPN box, a web development server and a fileserver (for now). I intend to use Debian squeeze for everything.
My main question is what should I do about RAID? I've not used it myself before, instead relying on backups to removable disks. This time I want to do everything properly, and a measure of disk redundancy is required so I guess we will be going for RAID 1.
I'm looking at this [URL].. server which comes with an Intel ICH10R RAID controller on board, and also has an option to add a 3ware 9650SE-LP. The site says the Intel chipset is Windows only, so I guess the 3ware alternative is the way to go. The server also has two 3.5" hot swap drive bays. Could anybody advise me if the 3ware card is a good choice for use with Debian? Also, how can I monitor the health of the drives with standard Debian tools out of the repos? Any other RAID tips are also interesting for me.

View 1 Replies View RelatedII'm a front-end web developer, I've always developed on Windows with technologies like XHTML, CSS, Javascript and Flash, I've dabbled with PHP and MySQL. I am well used to Windows workflows and tools, from Photoshop to Notepad++, Filezilla and WAMP server stacks to After Effects, and a swathe more - but always on Windows.I'm at a point where I think I need to start seriously developing on a Linux box, specifically at the moment to create web apps based on Node.js, but compiling tools and programs has become a task I'm more frequently required to do.
My question? I need to get my hands on a user-friendly install of Linux, but which one? I need common interface developer tools (lists welcome) to replace... well as many tools I have on Windows as possible.I need to be readily connected to the internet, I need OS updates to not destroy my workflow by crashing the OS, as I've seen Ubuntu do to various friends. I want efficiency, I need to be able to customise what I need to in order to perform development tasks.I guess this could be a long list, but - I don't have practical working knowledge of the Linux OS, nor how it "compares" to Windows (excuse my faux pas). I'm obviously willing to learn, but I'm far, far more keen to just... continue interface development, just on Linux instead of Windows.
I have an old Pentium-4, 2GB RAM, 2X160GB IDE-Hard disk computer. I am learning software development and I need a distribution with support for
(a) Oracle/Sun Glassfish v3 server
(b) Apache web server
(c) MySQL server
(d) Postgres server
(e) Sun virtual-box (headless)
(f) Webmin
For my home use, I need a proxy server and a file-and-print server (e.g. samba) I need to be able to run it headless. It should be easy to configure, but should also be like a real-world linux-distribution.
How to use a personal computer as a Linux web server for development purposes.
Is it possible to have both Windows XP and Linux web server in one computer?
I wanted to design a project in linux which could contain programming languages(C, perl, PHP, HTML, XML etc) basically a web based project. Why I have chosen to build on Linux is because it is Open Source, and lot many things can be automated through scripting languages, which in windows I don't know. So, I have installed linux on a virtual machine(Host-Windows 2007 & Guest Linux CentOS), CentOS(command line interface). Since I am a beginner, so I want to know what all tools can be used to facilitate and ease my development process. Some which I know are listed below:
1) Using Putty so that can access the Linux machine from anywhere within the network.
2) Since I want to develop on Linux, but want to use windows as developing platform. So have downloaded Eclipse Editor (C/PHP) on windows. But want to know how can I access linux files from here?
3) Installed Samba, and still trying to figure out how can I access linux files remotely on Windows.
4) How can I ease my development process and what all tools I can use..??
I'm looking for some advice on choosing the proper distribution for building a hardware/software development environment.
My main field of interest would be:
- HDL (VHDL mainly)
- FPGA/CPLD (synthesis, simulation etc)
- CSystemC
- Tcl scripting
- network hardware applications development (FPGA-based network processors i.e.)
Key (or nice to have at least) system features would be:
- large, stable and willing to help community (especially the large developer part of which would be welcomed)
- support for wide spectrum of development tools (proprietary and open source)
- bunch of docs, tutorials, guides, hints for devel's
As far as my online research went, I've manage to shorten it down to 3 favorites:
- Debian
- Fedora/CentOS
- Gentoo
I inadvertently upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 developmental while trying to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04.1. Can anyone can in downgrading back to a stable release without having to reformat everything?

How do I get these apache threads to stop hanging around?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIt is just a general discussion on "How Can Perl Be Useful in System Administration and Application Development on UNIX and Linux Platforms"? I am doing pretty much well with Bash and PHP. In fact, I am learning and experimenting in depth in those two domains. The project that I am working for these days has several scripts which are written in Perl and Ksh. They interact with Ab Initio graphs and perform extensive jobs. Anyways, my current role doesn't require me to have knowledge of Perl but I don't see any harm in learning something new.
So, before I take it, I want to know how Perl can help me and what I can do with it as a UNIX / Linux System Administrator and Application Developer? I just looked at some of its keywords, functions, and commands. Perl Variables are identical to those of PHP. Conditional Statements, Loops, etc. are also much the same as found in any other computer languages. So, at first glance, I have got this feel that it wouldn't be much difficult for me to learn it. But what do you say? Do I really need Perl when I am focusing on PHP and Bash?
I have to set up my development environment under OEL 5.4. The internal directory structure is more or less fixed, the question is where to put the whole application tree in standard FHS for the development phase. For production, the system will be deployed on a server where data is kept with an Oracle 11g database. Development goes with JDeveloper which has its own internal application/project directory structure; however, I whould like to be independent from this. Unfortunately, by carefully studying the web for FHS, if I will adhere to it I only find ready-made packages to put under /opt, for example. No development aspects are mentioned. make some proposal, possibly with respect to best practices.

Here's what I discovered though, if I change the variable name to LD_LIBRARY_PATK (I change the word "path" into something else) then it works just fine... So how am I supposed to add this variable? I need it to be named just that...
I'm trying to compile Ardour on jessie amd64 using the Debian source code (there's already an ardour package but I want to use different compile options). I've applied the Debian patches and have all the required dependencies installed.
Scons quits with a KeyError message from python2.7 saying that os.environ['DEB_HOST_ARCH_OS'] is not defined.
Checking with 'dpkg-archtecture -l' shows that DEB_HOST_ARCH_OS=linux, but 'print os.environ["DEB_HOST_ARCH_OS"]' in python says that name 'os' is not defined. The scons script has 'import os' at the top so it should be seeing it.
How do I make this visible to python (I'm assuming this problem is specific to the jessie python2.7 installation and not python in general)?
