General :: Distribution For A Home-cum-development Server?

Jun 20, 2010

I have an old Pentium-4, 2GB RAM, 2X160GB IDE-Hard disk computer. I am learning software development and I need a distribution with support for

(a) Oracle/Sun Glassfish v3 server
(b) Apache web server
(c) MySQL server
(d) Postgres server
(e) Sun virtual-box (headless)
(f) Webmin

For my home use, I need a proxy server and a file-and-print server (e.g. samba) I need to be able to run it headless. It should be easy to configure, but should also be like a real-world linux-distribution.

I was trying a virtualhost, but since that is name based, the web browsers don't know what to do with it. I know the safest way is to develop on this machine then move to web server but I'm just seeing if what I was trying to do is possible.

Fedora Servers :: Web Development Server & SVN?

Mar 18, 2009

I'm in charge of setting up svn on a Fedora Core 9 server running cpanel for a company website. The company currently has 4 developers working on the site which isn't live yet. The server currently has one user and the site is located in ~/public_html

My question is what is the best way to set up subversion for all the developers? Should I create the svn directory in ~/ or should I create a new user and put it in their ~/public_html and create a virtual host to it so I can have www.dev.site.com point to the svn version of the site? And then create a group for all the users so everyone can access it?

Server :: Web Development Environment Setup?

Feb 21, 2010

I have been looking around the web and forums for a while for the best way to set up a development office. I havent really found many specifics. I am with a new company is just starting to really take their development services seriously. We've added a couple developers and designers in the last month. I am trying to figure out a the best way to set up our environment.

We have a couple dedicated virtual servers with Media Temple. Currently, we develop everything under a subdomain of a domain we set up for development. When the site is ready to go live we move the site to its own domain. I cant believe this is the best way to go about things. So, what do you guys suggest as a setup? Software, versioning, etc. We have the ability to setup a test server in house and then push out changes to the production server but not really sure if that is needed.

We do mainly Wordpress development. If this should be posted in another area,

Server :: Choosing A Distribution For NAS?

Jan 15, 2010

I'm planning to build a NAS using spare bits of PC. I'm hoping to run the OS from a CF card. I want the machine to host music and also general files. I'm planning to install TwonkyMedia Server for the music.

1. I'd like to choose a small distribution, but one that is easy for me to deploy and manage (I'm new to Linux, but I am an IT professional). What shall I use?

2. I'd like to understand the implications of using Compact Flash. Will the OS need to write to disk? Can I configure my installation so that the CF card is read-only and provide a small writeable partition on my hard drive for any required IO? Should I not bother, and put it all on HD? (My motivation for using CF was to limit power-consumption/noise/heat).

Server :: Fast Distribution For Web Server?

Apr 19, 2010

We use Magento for our online shopping cart, and one of the things we've been focusing on is how to make it faster. Magento is known for being slow sometimes, although there are things that can be done to help with that. One thing I'm wondering is whether the Linux distribution we're using can help speed things up a bit. Right now we're using Ubuntu. I've been wondering if Gentoo could help, since it can compile everything and allows for good optimization when compiling and installing software. I had used Gentoo myself for a little while about 6 years ago and noticed it seemed a bit faster than other distros. My question is, what would be the fastest Linux distro for a web server?

General :: Getting A New Server Form Home?

Jan 20, 2010

So a family member was very nice and got me a killer server for my house. Not sure what I will do with it just yet. I will post spects shortly. Its Intel raided 2 750G drive 2G CPU and I believe 2 or 4 G memory. Rack mount with a KVM on it.

I have narrowed it down to 3 OS choices. Ubuntu : I run this on my LT and find it very nice for that. Some nice Media server Sw out there for it. I do some side work on RedHat and for my current employer so I was thinking CentOS or Fedora so I have a system running a similar OS on it.

At home this may be a www or media server for me long term. Or I may just use it as a test system initially to work on these Linux versions. I know this is all subjective and depends on what I plan to do with the server in the long run.

But out of the Fedora and CentOS release which is better knowing I am doing work in Red Hat for my current employer?

General :: Server - Can't Access Home Directory Over SMB

Feb 26, 2011

I have a server running Ubuntu server edition with SMB server all set up and running. I've set up the main root of the drive to be shared and I've set up a user in /etc/samba/smbusers to say root = "joeflood" so I can sign in as root using the username "joeflood". This works and I have read/write access to the filesystem (yay!). However, if I browse to /home/javawag (my main user home directory), I no longer have write permissions! I can see all the files in there and read them no problem, but writing is a no-go. I'm logged in as root though?! Btw, I can login via SSH and create folders/etc as root in the /home/javawag folder, and they showed up in the SMB mount on my mac too.

General :: Home Media And Storage Server?

Jun 2, 2010

i have a spare computer and 4 hds and was planning to make this computer a storage server with a media place aswell... i do have some linux knowledge but never used it for this and am not sure how good it will be initially the media files are in an HD with ntfs format which i want to keep as is... but i was wondering what options i had to make a media folder over network where i could browse and watch from any computer in my network ? is it samba my only options or is there a more media like solution for this ? There will aswell other features i was planning to use on it which made me think of linux, for example, svn server, websever with mysql to testing my applications, connection manager, all these i am sure on how to make and setup... but i am not very familiar with samba hence i am not sure if it is the best options for file sharing aswell as media sharing and/or my only option.i also heard that ntfs might be trouble some for linux in some cases
