General :: Recommendations For A Suitable Replacement?
Mar 21, 2011
I noticed over the weekend that there don't appear to be any new stories showing up at linuxtoday.com. Does anyone know what's up? Any recommendations for a suitable replacement?

Im just wondering what everyone's experiences are with the latest Ubuntu 10.04 version? Is it stable enough for a working environment? I require it for web development, so using VMs, IDEs, connecting to VPNs, SSH to servers, etc. Im currently using 9.04 and found 9.10 unstable and problematic at times (such as problems connecting to VPN)

Okay, so far nothing seems to have worked. I have OpenSuSE 11.0 and due to a failed mother board and hard drive had to reinstall it. Since the reinstall I have not been able to play .wmv files. I can play the same file just fine on my laptop but not on my desktop.I have win32codecs installed as well as libdvdcss and several other packages and still I cannot play these files with the following:
Kaffeine
Mplayer
VLC Player
I have searched and everything points to win32codecs (which are installed and the same version as I have on my laptop). I have tried deleting all the video player files including win32codecs, libdvdcss and their config files then reinstalling and that doesn't seem to have worked at all either. So I don't know what else to do.

I'm semi new to Linux, I use ubuntu for a little while. I'm tired of Windows and looking for something new, I've been aware of linux for some time now but not sure what distro is for me.
-I'm a gamer
-Photo Editor (GIMP)
-Video Maker (Screen Recorder)
-Firefox person (I hear Firefox comes pre-installed)
-Messenger Person (Aim, Skype, MSN)
And there are so many distributions I just am not sure.. I did try Guild Wars on Wine on Ubuntu but it just didn't seem like it was working right, I think I did it wrong.

I am so fed up with my Sony HDR that is already obsolete. As I am a linux geek, I have been thinking on building my own media central. Reading various hardware support list gives some information about if a card works or not, but not if its good. Also, I would like to buy a card from a vendor that actively supports linux. Can someone recommend a really good DVB-T card?
I would need: DVB-T support.Radio as an option. Two or more channels, three seems like the maximum that I would ever need, but who knows. Doesn't matter if its one or two cards, as long as it works. CAM support. Additional card or built in. I have no idea of how this works actually, but I think the CA module must support mpeg4 too? HDTV/Mpeg4 support (Software is fine, I guess.) I would also need a good remote control (bluetooth) that not neccesarily needs to come with the card, and a decent fanless graphics card that handles hdtv on linux...

Assistance in choosing a no frills rolling Linux Distro. Over the past few months have gotten my feet wet with Mepis, Linux Mint, Ubuntu and other distros. I really like these Linux distros. However, I dislike the need to frequently "reinstall" a distro as often as every 6 months just to keep it updated.
My computer:
PC with 1.4 GHz Athlon
512 RAM
320 Gig hard drive partitioned equally between Windows XP and a Linux Distro.
My computer is used primarily as a jukebox connected to my stereo system, and for email, browsing, etc. I am not a gamer.I'm tired of Windows and its problems; malware, viruses, and currently if I upgrade to Windows 7, I'll need a new computer just to meet the hardware requirements when what I have works for my needs, but the XP operating system is becoming obsolete.

I'm sure this is possible but I can't figure it out. I have a file formatted like this:
Code:
>SEQUENCE1
FGFD665:?@663:BBBBAA?A@<<4!1004699<7444399>???888455555?AAA?AABBB@@@<<<34
>SEQUENCE2
>&<4!1004699<7444399>???888455555?AAA?AABBB@@@<<<34BBB@@
>SEQUENCE3
???888455555?AAA?AABBB@@@<<<341004699<7444399>???888BBB@@
The odd-numbered lines containing >SEQUENCE# are the headers and the even-numbered lines containing a variety of characters represent DNA sequence read quality scores.
I want to replace all of the greater-than (">") symbols in the quality scores (even-numbered lines) with a "0" but I want to leave the greater-than symbols on the odd-numbered lines alone. I would just use sed -i '/^>/! s/>/0/g' $FileName but sometimes the quality scores begin with a ">" as well.
I'm sure there is a simple modification of a normal sed command with an "n" inserted somewhere but I can't figure it out.

I'm still kinda new to linux. I've been learning my way around the command line and been experimenting with linux on a couple computers of mine. Occasionally after trying a few things, grub or linux won't load right. I've done some research on possible tools to help but I was wondering if any of the more experienced users had some recommendations for boot disk or tools to help repair grub and/or linux desktop/server editions.
p.s. I would also be interested in any fun and interesting tools, programs, and/or repository's that other users have found beneficial.

My foray into Linux is one of hopeful necessity:I have a friend who doesn't have any comp & whose son is leaving for the military. I have an old pc I was planning to recycle but instead would like to see if it can be put back into use.She has wireless service in her apt building which she would like to access. I don't know if the versions of Linux that are light duty enough to operate on such a low end machine still suwifi networking... (I will have to download it at home to a mac, burn it to cd & install from there)? Is it possible to install a wireless card into an old P3/128mb ram (IBM 6564/GL300) and get it working?

I know on Windows boxes you can defrag and run disk checks on large file shares to find and fix errors. What would be the equivolent to those for an ext3 800GB samba share containing pictures, documents, and videos? Is their online vs. offline (during a reboot) things that should be done?

So far I have been using 32 bit ubuntu in my IBM ThinkCentre - 2.5 GB RAM, Intel Pentium Dual Core inside (1.60 GHz X 2) machine. Now I am coming to Debian soon. As a student I am involved in processing lot of satellite imagery for my project work. Therefore a friend recommended me to use 64 bit OS as it would make image processing faster. Is my hardware sufficient for that?

I've been using an old Logitech Quickcam Express with the qc-usb drivers for years. It functions fairly well on older kernels with the patches that became available. Works on a Slackware 11 box with a 2.6.15.1 kernel, but I can't get the driver to compile on newer kernels, and I don't want to spend days trying to find patches that may or may not work.
I'd like to get a cam that I can use without too much difficulty on a Slackware64 13.1 box with a >2.6.36 kernel.

I have agreed to set up a server to run an existing website from a hosted solution. This is no problem I have setup Centos 5.5 64 bit, all running OK. The existing site is single directory HTML with a very small amount of Java script. The user has no technical knowledge and would like to be able to go in and modify their site, sadly vim is not an option
Has anyone got any suggestion of single or multi site CMS solutions that are easy to set up and use. I would also need to import the existing site. I do not have weeks to spend learning a new product at the moment though I would love to do so.

I am going to be given an old "piece of junk" and would like to turn it into a speedy little "toy" to use for things, along with my os x and xp.The computer has windows 98 installed and only has 32MB RAM (could be 64, not sure until im given it) and a 1gig HDD. It also has a CD drive and a Floppy.I would like to speed it to the max, to make it perform (in comparison) as nearly as good as my mac. eg. when apps are opened, they only take a few seconds to pop up. I am looking at Linux distros but am struggling to find one suitable.
I was thinking of Puppy but DSL would probably be more suitable.I would like some recommendations to whether I should give windows a fresh install and try to delete whatever is unnecessary, or just clear it and download a linux and use WINE.

present we have a folder shared between branches (Approx 10G of data) and we're using Windows 2003 with DFS but this has had a number of issues and thus is scheduled to be replaced with a Linux solution for various reasons.I would need a scalable system that will allow me to start off with 5 servers each having a samba?hare to Windows pc's. The 5 servers though must replicate any changes made to the folder. So if server 1 received a new file, it should replicate the change to servers 2-5 etc... Ideally I would also like the shares to allow for AD based permissions. Can anyone recommend a way forward with this? I am currently looking into GlusterFS and lsyncd as two options for the replication
