Anyone know of a script to do the usual stuff to Fedora that you may want to do following a fresh installation? Such as... install rpmfusion, install the real adobe flash, install sun's java, etc etc. There's plenty of guides/howto's out there, but I'm about to start working on something like 'winetricks', but for fedora. Thought I'd ask to see if anyone has seen something like that first.
View 1 RepliesI've been looking for a while, a way to customize my gdm screen under the new gnome 3 (fedora 15). As of now the touchpad click of my laptop is disabled under the gdm screen but not when I log into my session. I figure the gnome settings must be different under gdm so I need to find a way to change said settings but up until now I wasn't successful. Does anyone have an idea on how to activate the touchpad click under gdm ? And more generally how to customize the gdm screen in gnome 3 (change the themes, etc) ?
N.B : Already know how to change the background of the gdm screen. All you have to do is put the background you want in the folder fitting your screen resolution under "/usr/share/backgrounds/lovelock/default-stripes" then by editing the file "/usr/share/backgrounds/lovelock/default-stripes/lovelock.xml" so that the name of the new background is up to date within that file
I just upgraded from Fedora F11 to F15. Before making this transition, I backed up my system using my Mac's DVD burn hardware and tested the disk on my F11 system. Ok.After F15 install, the DVD backup won't mount. I've tested a generic DVD from a tech book and this will mount. Ok.What else can I do? hfs-tools is installed. I don't know how to go about troubleshooting this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo, my second real attempt at getting the 64 bit F11 up and running. I just started adding stuff before all the updates. Crash. So, I'm in the post install phase. Before anything else I installled akmod-nvidia manually, rebooted, and I'm doing yum update right now. I'm hoping many dependencies are solved in the update. There are about 209 line items to update after the initial install. Been updated all afternoon.
So, after the updates are done, I'm heading over to download the different repos I need for the fun stuff. Did you know Java is installed with this first yum update? Wasn't like that in F10. I think I tried 5 times on F10 before I got it right.
I am loving the opensource driver as I don't have to switch to "discrete" mode in BIOS to get 3D support as I would have to with Ubuntu. (M11x has switchable graphics which is not supported by the nvidia proprietary driver for linux) I need some help with the audio though. It works. I just realized that sound is heard when the laptop is connected to an external speaker. Internal speakers still don't work. I don't know how to fix this (probably fix the switches somewhere another mixer gui or via command line) and I don't really care as the internal speakers aren't that great and I almost never use them.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu customization kit on 8.04. However whenever I try to install it from the .deb file (it's not in the repos) it returns "Error: Dependancy not satisfyable: Python" I tried sudo apt-get install update, sudo apt-get install python and installing python through synaptic but it says it's the latest version of python already.

I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

Witch packages do i have to install to have a FULL KDE enviroment as if i would have selected KDE when i installed suse? Not just the desktop, but kde apps, themes, etc. Or even better. Is there a "Meta package" that installs everything?

I'm getting a "failed to download /suse/setup/descr/packages.DU.gz from [URL] It seems to get about 48% and just hangs there. This happens both if I try downloading updates during the install or if I try doing an on-line update after the system is up.

The install auto-config has always worked for me. On this laptop, I needed some firmware, however. I think I've got the firmware installed, but I now need to get the wireless set up. The post-install network configuration tools I've seen thus far are intimidating, unlike the simple during-install config.

With very little tweaking, I got everything to run right including wireless, but now I notice that I can't run any new (post-install) programs that I install through Ubuntu Software Center. In fact, I haven't tried installing any other way, but all software that was part of the default installation works fine, but these programs won't run:VLC Media PlayerSkypeStarsWhen I click on the programs to run them, the other apps slow or freeze for 30-45 seconds as if the computer is contemplating starting them, and then nothing. No errors, no shell or blank window - nothing. They just don't run.I only created one user account at O/S install and as far as I can tell is the SU, so I can't see it being a permissions issue.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've seen that some guy here in this forum has installed Code_Aster and Salome-Meca on his Slackware. There is also a nice howto for installing CA on Slackware13 64bit. I already managed to install the two softwares and make them working without big troubles. I would like to create the slackware pakages from the sources in order to make easy uninstalling and upgrading the packages. Unfortunately I'm not so skilled, the installation procedure is a bit different from the usual one so I cannot start from some existing slackbuild. They must be installed launching a post_install.py script after uncompressing the archive. I'm unable to understand what this python script does but I think they are installed as a stand-alone programs with all the dependencies and configuration files in the destination folder. I wonder if you think it's worth to create the package and ask for some tips on how to do this.

I wanted my final install of openSuse 11.3 to be, and I had chosen Gnome. Well, after a few days, I got bored with it again since I've done so much with it on other Distros, so I installed openSuse 11.3 with KDE last night lol. (Reinstalling Linux distros is just so much fun lol).Anyways, I'm currently running my KDE 4.4 Suse desktop and would like to know what some of you guys have for customizations. I'd like to make my computer real nice with cool themes, icons, widgets and whatever else I can change.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on a MSI CX620. Installation went fine but trying to boot it up the first time nothing but a black screen shows up. I've tried:
Holding shift on startup - Nothing
Press down all keys - Not much, only ctrl+alt+delete makes the screen turn off and then on again.
I'm thinking that I had secure boot on which I now after installation see could be a problem, but I didn't think it would be a problem as I could just go into bios and turn it off, but seeing now that I can't even go into bios it may be a problem.
I have been running OpenSuSE 11.1 with the proprietary VNIDIA driver for a year or so and recently upgraded my internet connection from slow old dialup. I installed some software upgrades this made possible but the process failed on some point (I didn't make a note of the details) and the next time I tried to log on it booted up to the CLI. I tried startx and got the message;

I'm trying to relocate my home directory which currently resides at the default, root location /home/user.
My Systems Specs:
Karmic64
Root resides on a Raid0 LVM MD0
NEW Drive resides on Raid0 LVM MD1
I installed a new disk on a LVM(Logical Volume Manager), and now want to move my default home directory to the new location. I did rsync my home directory from the OLD to the NEW. When I do update my /etc/fstab with the NEW home location, I recieve errors upon rebooting, that certainly relate to permission issues, including some from Nautilus that mentions permissions issues...
I also tried to update the USERS/GROUP Manager with the NEW location but after reopening the USERS/GROUP manager, I can see the original location has been reverted back. I can create a new user and succesfully map their home directory to the NEW home location on my MD1 LVM. Any links on home to remap their existing HOME directory to a new location?
I run a live cd I downloaded, right? Everything goes fine - it installs with no real issues whatsoever, when all of a sudden after the install it boots to nothing but the famous black screen with a white, blinking dash.So, what do I do? I downloaded the lastest x86 stable release of openfiler and installed it on VBOX durring the install I selected to manually do the partitions and added a
/boot
swap (x2 ram)

Partition scheme. I selected DHCP client on the network configuration. Now from what I understand once I have done that I should be able to point my browser to https:<IP>:446 and login as root and configure everything within the GUI. But when I log in there is nothing to configure. My host system is Ubuntu x86_64 4GB Ram amd dual core processor.
As the title says, I'm building a kickstart for a RedHat installation.I'm trying to incorporate the firegl driver rpm installation and its halfway working, not completly. What I've tried so far is to place the rpm in the --nochroot and in the normal chroot enviornment and neither one works. In the --nochroot, install it with rpm --root /mnt/sysimage/ and in the normal post i just do an rpm -ivh. In either case the fglrx folder is built within /lib/modules, however everything thats supposed to be installed never makes it to the newly installed root. I'm thinking that its actually getting installed to the installation / as opposed to the new /.

For example the dock that appears at the bottom of the screen, I don't dig it but it isn't under System ---> Preferences ---> Startup applications. Also when I connect/disconnect my modem, can I change the size of the notification window and how long it stays on the screen? Another is how to stop everything I plug in appearing on the desktop. I prefer an uncluttered desktop and would like to open plug-in devices through Places.

The fun part of this all is that once you know how to work in Bash. Linux isn't all so frightening and confusing anymore ! So I've decided to finally take the shot on switching from Windows to Ubuntu Desktop and I must say I'm quite amazed with the customization you can do in Ubuntu.I just installed Docky and I installed Gnome Do. Now it has come to my attention that Gnome Do can integrate with Docky however I do have a small question concerning the customization of the Dock bar. In Gnome Do I would really like to have the panel look from Docky and I was wondering if this is possible. To me it seems that it's only possible to use the 3D look which looks a lot like Mac OSx. I'm aiming for a bit of a Windows 7 interface however.
