Fedora :: Plasma Dock Doesn't Catch Clicks With Compiz?

Nov 9, 2010

I just decided to go with Compiz rather than Kwin for my window manager. I have everything working beautifully aside from one little problem... The plasma dock won't pick up clicks any more. The mouse focuses on whatever is underneath the dock, rather than the dock itself. I'm sure there is a setting I can alter to override this behavior, I just can't figure it out to save my life.

Upon further investigation I found that it only behaves this way if I set the dock to auto-hide.

OpenSUSE :: Plasma No Longer Registers Mouse Clicks After Unlocking The Cursor From DOSBox

Jun 18, 2011

I'm currently running openSuSE 11.4 (kde v 4.6.4), and after unlocking the mouse cursor from the DOSBox (v 0.74) window, none of the Plasma Desktop Widgets or Components will register mouse clicks until I reboot.

Is there something config-wise I might change to prevent this from happening, or is there an otherwise quick way to restart only plasma using the terminal? Yakuake still drops down, and works, fortunately, so doing this is not a problem.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that all of said applications were installed from openSuSE repos using YaST2.

Fedora :: Plasma Has Gone Crazy And Avahi Daemon Doesn't Work On F12?

Mar 28, 2010

As mentioned in the title something is terribly wrong with my system. After some updates in the last 2 days Plasma keeps on crashing like a jackhammer. Kwin reports bugs and siece to work. That said I have no borders of any window I have opened and no Kickstart menu. (I am using KDE 4.4.1.) On top of it all when I rebooted the system it just hangs when it is supposed to start X and KDM. When I switch to verbose boot I see that Avahi Daemon has a "Failed" sign. I have tried with older kernels, but that did not solve anything. To be honest I am clueless on how to fix Avahi. The easiest way is to reinstall Fedora, but I would have stuck with Windows for that and where is the learning opportunity in that?

Ubuntu :: Compiz "smart" Window Placement And Cairo-dock?

Aug 23, 2010

I have cairo-dock 2.2 set to auto-hide when it overlaps the current window, allowing me to maximize windows to fill the entire screen or view two windows side by side with grid without having the dock taking up space (but still accessible by going to the bottom of the screen). My only problem is that this way I can't effectively use the Smart mode in the Place Windows plugins of compiz because new windows get placed over the dock and hide it when I don't want to. So I'm stuck using Cascade.

Is there any way to make it so a window will not appear on top of the dock without using panel mode or some other space-wasting feature, or any kind of "keep below" arrangement making the dock inaccessible when a window is over it?

Fedora :: NVidia And Compiz Installed And Working But Screen Doesn't Refresh Correctly?

Oct 30, 2010

What it does is, if you do something to change anything on the screen, for example, highlighting text, or switching from one tab/menu in an application to another. The screen doesn't show the change. The only way to SEE the change is to do something else to the screen, like grabbing and moving the application around, or scrolling the page of a website, etc. If you don't do that, you won't see what's really on the screen, but rather what WAS on the screen.

Another example:

*) say you have an application open with 3 tabs: tab1, tab2, and tab3.
*) Switch from tab1 to tab2 and you see no change on the screen.
*) Switch from tab2 to tab3 and you see tab 2 on the screen, NOT tab 3.
*) Switch from tab3 to tab 2 and you see tab3 on the screen, and NOT tab2.

Or, if you're typing in this box to make a post, and you hit ctrl+a to select all, you see no change. If you click in the box to deselect all, then it looks like you've selected all text still. The only way to see what's currently on the screen is to scroll the text box or page just a bit, or, if you're using an application, then you'd have to move it around on the screen a bit.

As i've said, the nVidia drivers are installed and working, as well as compiz, etc.

Code:
[=v=]$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RD890 Northbridge only single slot PCI-e GFX Hydra part (rev 02)
00:02.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RD890 PCI to PCI bridge (PCI express gpp port B)

[Code]....

Also, i did BOTH the dracut thing, and the extra kernel paramter in the grub.conf. So, nouveau is blacklisted. Oddly enough though, i do NOT have this problem when using the nouveau driver...

Also, fwiw, i think that i should mention that i'm not using the "Desktop Settings > Enable Desktop Effects" method, because i always seem to have problems with getting certain features to work, like the background for the cube skydome, etc. How i do it is that i install a package called compiz-manager, and i have it set to run at session start. This makes all of the compiz features work fine. One thing that i've noticed though, is that on my other workstation, i haven't set that up yet, and it seems that is is NOT having the same issue. While compiz-manager was running, i tried to use the "desktop settings" method, and it crapped out and reverted back to the old school desktop. I then tried it again, and it reloaded compiz, and there is no screen update issues now. So it seems that you have to have both of them running in order to get all of the compiz options to work, and not have the screen refresh issue?

Ubuntu :: Sleep.d Script Doesn't Call Cairo-dock?

Jan 19, 2011

Cairo-Dock corrupts on suspend resume.My problem is that cairo-dock gets corrupted after I resume from suspend. I've tried to solve this problem but can't find anything more than others suffering from the same dilemma. So I came to conclusion that the easiest way ist to restart cairo-dock. I now have made the working scripts to shut it off and to start it but now the trash applet and home -directory applet won't workIt says :warning : (/build/buildd/cairo-dock-plug-ins-2.2.0~4/shortcuts/src/applet-.c:cd_shortcuts_list_drives:306) and same for rest apps.I am exporting $HOME variable and I have made sure $HOME works so I don't understand. The problem seems to be cairo-dock can't be started with su -m USER -c "exec /home/USER/ohjelmointi/shell/cairo-dock-on.sh &"it just doesn't know how to load something for the applets. But otherwise the settings load fine

Whether it is vi or gvim, you can view the current non-default settings by writing ":set" and pressing <ENTER>. However, in FC15, vim clears the settings screen really quickly, not allowing me enough time to catch it. Normally it should pause at the settings screen, and clear it only when I press any key. If others see the same problem, I will file a bug.

Fedora :: Mouse Clicks Not Being Handled

Dec 30, 2010

I'm using Fedora 14. I used pre-upgrade from Fedora 12. I'm using KDE and the nvidia driver.

My problem has to do with the mouse. Basically, only mouse clicks on one window at a time are being handled. If I have Chrome and Thunderbird both open then the mouse will behave normally on Chrome but clicking anywhere on Thunderbird will have no effect. By clicking I mean both left and right mouse button.

To get clicking on Thunderbird to work I have to right-click anywhere on the active window (Chrome in this case), then right-click on the window I want to be active next (Thunderbird). This will allow me to use Thunderbird normally but then Chrome becomes inactive. Typing works even if the window is inactive if the cursor is on the window.

I've found that if I log out and then log back in, the problem disappears. I also tried creating a new user and logging in with that user but the problem still persisted.

Fedora :: Plasma Hangs For A Long Time?

The desktop stops working, the panel stops working.. but compositing, desktop cube etc all work fine.I can still launch a program with Alt-F2.When I try and kill it (to restart) using 'killall plasma' / 'kill -9 <pid> / 'kill -15 pid' from a terminal, nothing happens, the process keeps running. If I leave it for about 30 mins it suddenly dies, allowing me to run 'plasma' from a terminal - then everything is back to normal.

If I log out and try to log back in again, I get a black screen. Only way to fix it is either to kill it and wait for 30 mins or so, or totally reboot the computer.Tail of the xsessions error file:

Fedora X86/64bit :: F11 - Plasma-desktop Eating RAM ?

Nov 25, 2009

I have Fedora 11 64bit installed and using KDE with all the updates . I noticed that after a few days of work the plasma-desktop process is eating abnormal quantities of memory - resident size can grow up to 1 GB, by then KDE gets so unresponsive that you have to restart the session anyway.

I don't use desktop effects and no plasmoids either (even got rid of the folder view of desktop), the graphics are Intel 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller with the default (intel) driver. I have dual monitor setup (1600x1200 and 1024x786), to get them work correctly I had to come up with a custom xorg.conf and xrandr (if someone thinks xorg.conf contents can be relevant, I can post them, too).

I've seen reports of memory leaks in versions 4.2, but none so severe as is my case.

Below is the top command (sorted by RSS) after just 5 days of usage, showing plasma-desktop consuming growing towards 500MB:

How to stop it consuming so much RAM? This is a real annoyance, since it slows down the whole machine because of induced swapping.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Fusion Set To Load On Boot It Doesn't?

Mar 27, 2011

Compiz Fusion set to load on boot; it doesn't. Settings checked as start on boot, it just doesn't and has to be loaded manually from desktop 2.) Desktop Drapes (wallpaper changer) also set to load on boot; also doesn't do so, even though checked to do so, and also must be loaded manually from desktop. 3.) Something is hogging CPU cycles something awful; if I have more than a few tabs in Firefox open, it takes forever to scroll or reload, and the entire system just bogs almost to the point of unusability. This same behavior exists offline when using any graphic capability (Shotwell or even just Nautilus file manager, if viewing graphics as thumbnails.

I realize this is kind of all over the place and all-inclusive, but although my experience USING Ubuntu goes on several years, it's been generally so trouble-free that I've not had to dig around under the hood much, and I'm kind of at a loss as to where to begin troubleshooting this mess. Would it be easier to just back-up and nuke/reinstall the OS?
