Fedora :: Run Script That Automatically Opens Nautilus As Root

Aug 19, 2010

I am trying to run a script that automatically opens Nautilus as root for a certain directory.

# cd /home/abby/Desktop
# gedit go2html.sh
cd /var/www/html
su -c "nautilus ./ &"
# chmod u+x go2html.sh
# ./go2html

The script appears to run but the foreground process closes unexpectedly.

Fedora :: Beesu Nautilus Window Never Opens (VNC Via Xinetd)

Feb 23, 2011

I have setup a vnc server using the "every imagineable server" thread which setups up VPN using xinetd. I have also installed Beesu and its associated scripts so I can easily open root privileged nautilus windows.

beesu works a treat on the actual display. However whilst vnc'd into the box I get prompted for my root password (which it accepts) but a nautilus window never opens. No errors, it just doesn't open.

Fedora Installation :: Nautilus Opens Only Through Dropbox Folder

Aug 25, 2011

I just did a clean install and started with the software installation. After I installed dropbox, a window popped up asking me for administrator's password....I put in my user password and it said wrong password (i just now remembered not adding myself to administrator's group while creating my user...ouch!) after which a notficiation came and went too fast for me to read it properly....it said something like unable to set user /etc/x something something.....I know it sounds completely vague but that is all I could before it disappeared.

Now, nautilus won't open unless I click on the dropbox icon below in the taskbar.I guess I can manage for a while but I'm hoping to find a solution to the problem.

Fedora :: Places Menu In Gnome Opens Dolphin (KDE) Instead Of Nautilus

Feb 26, 2010

I'm having a strange problem in my gnome installation. I have about a dozen window managers installed, and just to test the new KDE 4.4 update I used kde for one day (use gnome mostly) and now the gnome places menu opens up the kde file manager dolphin instead of nautilus. How can I change it. It doesn't even appear in the edit menus item on right clicking the menu.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Automatically Re-activate/connect Wireless When Laptop Opens?

Mar 28, 2010

I've got my Lenovo T60 laptop wireless running without too much trouble, the only problem is when i close my laptop lid and open it again the wirelessconnection is down and i simply cant click on the network icon in the notification area to re-connect as wlan0 is inactive. If i go to System>admin>network i cant activate the interface either as the 'active' button is greyed out, the only way to get the thing to come alive again (other than a full reboot) is to toggle the wireless switch on my laptop off and then back on.Not sure this should be required, i've got the interface configured to start automatically but it doesnt seem to care.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Always Opens An Extra Directory?

May 22, 2010

When I open a directory from the Places menu on the Gnome panel, two Nautilus windows open up. One is the location I asked for. The other is always "/media/Data/ZZZMaint/PC/R stats pkg". I think it may be to do with the fact that some time earlier I had created a launcher in the Main Menu - called "R documentation"', with command "nautilus --no-desktop '/media/Data/ZZZMaint/PC/R stats pkg' " (the idea was to have a menu item that opened up a folder containing a set of documents I refer to). I have since disabled that menu item but the problem remains. I would very much like to stop Nautilus opening this extra window.I've tried looking through gconf-editor but haven't seen anything that looks relevant. The extra window doesn't get opened when I run Nautilus from other places, but it always happens when Nautilus is opened from the Places Menu, regardless of whether I'm opening a drive or a bookmark.

Slackware :: Firefox 4 Opens As Root

Mar 27, 2011

I got the mozilla FF4, extracted, copied to /usr/lib/firefox, changed the old one to /usr/lib/firefox-3 (I had the 3.03 or something like it) Now,I just can make it work... but just as root! If I am in Konqueror, super user, and click over the firefox it opens Firefox 4, as root. If I open another X, as root, I just need to click the old firefox icon and it opens. As user, there is no way I compared the files from /usr/lib/firefox, the new ones with the old ones in /usr/lib/firefox-3, and the permissions are THE SAME. I even tried to replace the firefox and the run-mozilla.sh, the only difference is that then I can get the update window to appear, but it does nothing and just crash. I didn't touched the /usr/bin/firefox, since it just point to the /usr/lib, and in fact, since it is working as root, in user space and in root KDE,it is OK. I tries first,of course, to get a slack one, but at linuxpackages there is only the FF4 for the newest slacks.

Ubuntu :: Click On The File System Icon In The Launcher To Open A Nautilus Window The Window Opens, But Is Unresponsive?

Aug 8, 2011

My system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.

If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.

I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Automatically Re-mounts Pendrive After Unmount / But Only Once

Apr 24, 2011

What happens on my computer is this: when I insert my Walletex business card-shaped pendrive into any USB port, everything works fine, and so does unmounting using the right-click "Eject" option. However, when I try to unmount the device using the other context menu option, "Remove device safely" (or something like that; sorry, I'm using a localized version of GNOME), it does unmount it, but then mounts it right back on. The weird thing is that after it does it, if you try using that same unmount option again ("Remove safely"), it actually works! And I can replicate this issue every time: the "Eject" context menu option works the first time every time I try it, but the "Remove safely" one, when used for the first time per device insertion causes an unmount and then a re-mount, and works the second time you try it

Ubuntu :: Nautilus As Root Does Not Work On Laptop

Jul 20, 2010

Two screenshots are attached. On my laptop (a Toshiba Satellite A105) when I open nautilus as root the window that opens is screwed up. If I type [code] "gksudo nautilus" at a terminal prompt, screenshot-1 is what I see. Screenshot-1.png

The title bar has the word "root" instead of "root - File Browser" as it should be. There is no main toolbar, location bar, and no side bar. The next line beneath the title bar shows File, Edit, View, Places, Help instead of File, Edit, View, Go, Bookmarks, Help. If I click on View there are no checkboxes for Main Toolbar, Side Pane, Location Bar, and Status Bar. If I click on anything and then slightly move my mouse the nautilus window immediately closes. Therefore, I can't use nautilus at all to do anything.

This strange behavior only happens when I open nautilus as root. If I open nautilus normally, there are no problems. Screenshot-2 shows the window that opens if I run nautilus as root on my desktop computer. Screenshot-2.png

General :: Gnome/nautilus Mounting And Unmounting Without Root?

Feb 28, 2010

Gnome version 2.28.1 with kernel 2.6.31-14 on an Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic box.I'm wondering how usb drives, etc get automounted in gnome now days. Thought it might be fusermount, but no.Gnome-mount is not installed. Perhaps it is via AL or udev, but what commands control it? I've found posts that talk about using gnome-mount, but these are outdated as this package isn't even installed by default anymore.I would like to unmount certain volumes via the command line, but without having root privileges as gnome is doing by clicking in nautilus. I would like to do the equivalent from the command line.

Are there any command lines commands that will allow me to do this (not talking about pmount which is not installed)? Also, is there a way to prevent automounting of just certain devices, but not all? I have a USB with 7 different things on it (a "built-in" CD for some reason for windoz users, the original NTFS, and 5 linux partitions). I really only want one of the linux partitions (an XFS for DVD isos) to automount but not all the others. I would like not to have to disable ALL automounting as in:
Code:

$ gconftool-2 -s /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount --type=bool false
$ gconftool-2 -s /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount_open --type=bool false

Ubuntu Security :: Anyway To Get Nautilus To Give Root Permissions On Server?

Mar 30, 2010

I have recently secured a server by preventing root from logging in via SSH. Now I log in with a non-root account and use 'su' when necessary. However, now I can't do something I used to do, which is open 'sftp://user@ipaddress' in nautilus and be able to edit files as root. Is there anyway to get nautilus to give me root permissions on the server? Or at least end up with root permissions in a GUI text editor on my computer? I don't mind if I have to use bash to start the process, once I can get a GUI for editing files.

Note 1: Yes, I realize I could ssh in and use nano/vi etc, but I'd rather use my graphical text editor.
Note 2: The server does not run X, so I can't just forward it.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Requires Root Permission Even Without Gksudo, sudo, etc

Aug 15, 2010

Every time I try to open Nautilus it requires root permission even if I don't use commands like gksudo.

I launch it from docky's bookmarks applet, requires root.

Use a command like "nautilus /home/harvey" it still requires root.

Adding the file browser launcher to docky doesn't even LAUNCH nautilus.

But launching file browser from gnome-panel works O_O.

But I never use gnome-panel, so I'd like to be able to launch it from docky and commands and stuff without root permission.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: IPod Automatically Mounted But Can Only Write As Root?

Jan 30, 2010

I don't know why but every time I plug my iPod it gets mounted automatically as root and therefore I can't write anything in it. I mentioned this issue on the #suse irc channel posting mount output:

eugenio@openSUSE:~> mount
/dev/sda7 on / type ext4 (rw,acl,user_xattr)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
debugfs on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw)

[Code]....

I read some posts about editing the fstab file but I'm not really sure how to do this (if this is the solution) and I believe this could have worked on earlier versions (where HAL was used) Is there anything I can do to make opensuse mount my ipod automatically with full access to normal users?
