Fedora :: Dialog Box Opens When Closing Gnome-terminal?

Jun 30, 2009

When closing the gnome-terminal a dialogue box opens that says:

Close This Window?
There is a process still running in this terminal.
Closing this terminal will kill it.

Nothing is running it's complete, so I have to close the box then the terminal closes. I know I'm a perfectionist. how to get rid of this?

Debian :: Gnome Hangs After Closing Root Terminal

Apr 21, 2015

Running Gnome on Jessie. Have had Gnome hang a few times over the past few months. The hangs seem to be related to having open and / or closing a root terminal. It has happened on a Gateway AMD Phenom II tower and on my Gateway NV59 lappy with Pentium P6200.

Ubuntu :: Function With Closing Only Applicable Gnome-terminal?

Oct 26, 2010

I wrote this little function that I use from my '~/.bashrc' (from a script I also made, with help) to run a program on a timer, however there is one small issue I'm having.

Code:
##### Run program on a timer
# Usage: program-timer <program> <runlength (in secs)>
function program-timer()
{
$1 &
mypid=`eval ps ax|grep "$1"|grep -iv "grep"| awk '{print $1}'`

[Code]...

Basically, it works just fine, but the issue I'd love to get help with is when the timer runs out, it doesn't shutdown the program. That is, not until I close gnome-terminal. I've tried 'exit' in several places, but it doesn't seem to close it.

Now, the above script does what I want, but using 'killall gnome-terminal' not only closes the gnome-terminal window I am running the function on, but ALL gnome-terminal windows I may have open.

Does anybody see a simple way to fix my small dilemma, to have it close only the gnome-terminal window I'm running the function on?

Fedora :: Gnome 3 Open File Dialog Not Talking To Browser?

Aug 25, 2011

I suspect this is a Gnome 3 problem and not a Fedora problem, but I have no way to separate the two here. I cannot upload an image from my computer to Weebly or to Google Plus, but strangely enough, I can upload one to Picasa. The sequence of actions goes something like this:

1. Open Weebly editing interface, add a picture element, click on the element to edit/add a picture. It then gives you a choice: from your local computer, from the web, etc.

2. Click on 'from local computer' and my computer opens the Open File Dialog Window.I am guessing that is its name, it is the same window you get when opening a file in any other application, like Gedit or LibreOffice.

3. Navigate to the image I want to upload and double click on it or select 'Open'.

4. Nothing happens.

I am able to upload images from my laptop, running Linux Mint 11 with Gnome 2.

It sounds to me like the Open File Window is not passing on the necessary information to the browser. I have no idea why it works in Picasa and not in Google+ or Weebly.

I don't really expect anyone to have a solution just yet, but I wanted to mention it somewhere, and I didn't see any Gnome.org forums. On the other hand, if someone does have a solution, great.

This is by no means a knock on Gnome 3, it is fine with me and I Iike it a lot more than I thought I would.

Fedora :: Places Menu In Gnome Opens Dolphin (KDE) Instead Of Nautilus

I'm having a strange problem in my gnome installation. I have about a dozen window managers installed, and just to test the new KDE 4.4 update I used kde for one day (use gnome mostly) and now the gnome places menu opens up the kde file manager dolphin instead of nautilus. How can I change it. It doesn't even appear in the edit menus item on right clicking the menu.

Software :: GUI Dialog Box With Embedded Terminal Window?

Jun 22, 2011

I've been doing some work with BASH over the past few months, building scripts and config files, and quite happy with BASH for the purpose of building and installing distros and packages.

Now though, I'd like to go a little further than gTerm, and have a terminal window within a dialog box so I can click on buttons and set config parameters with a mouse, and watch the progress and send status messages from the script running in BASH in the terminal window back to the dialog box.

Quite a few GUI packages seem to offer the choice to open a terminal window to watch the progress. I am probably working in reverse, in wanting a terminal window to open a containing dialog box, but I'm sure it can be done if I want to go back and adapt my old MS-DOS 286 C skills to Linux.

What I'd prefer is a quick and easy way: to just find a tool like whiptail or zenity or dialog, setup a couple of buttons and a message / progress bar, and dump my BASH script terminal output into a window inside the dialog box.

Can anybody suggest offhand which of these mentioned dialog packages (ie. whiptail dialog zenity) or any others, provide an option to open a terminal window inside a dialog box? Then pass fairly simple variables between the two?

Ubuntu :: Avoiding Terminal Closing After Running Script

May 7, 2010

[using Ubuntu 10.04 - Gnome] I know this is probably a dumb question, but after few years of not using linux i'm back to it and trying to catch up what i already forgot... i'm trying to make a shell script were when all the commands end or when i interrupt it (using ctrl+c) it wont close my terminal window.

i made a test scrip like this:

#!/bin/sh
echo hi there

and created a launcher by right clicking create launcher, selected console application, naming it and putting in the command field: sh "<path to file>/test.sh". (without sh at start it wont work)

so how can i avoid shell window closing after running/terminating the script? and is there any way i can do this by doing something like right click>add new link... i think that in kde it works like that...

OpenSUSE Network :: GNOME 3 SSH Passphrase Dialog Does Not Allow Pasting Or Dropping

Jul 19, 2011

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.4 and the GNOME 3 packages in the GNOME:STABLE repository. I maintain an application and have a remote Mercurial repo hosted at BitBucket, which requires SSH to do any push/pull operation.

My passphrase is just that -- a phrase, not a word -- and it's too long to type accurately without seeing it. I cut and paste it from a web page. When I'm asked by a console app for the passphrase, I can do that. The GNOME SSH passphrase dialog does not allow pasting or dropping, so I can either try to type it or hit cancel. Normally, ssh-add provided a way around this; it would ask you for the phrase on the console, and I could paste it.

This doesn't work in GNOME 3. ssh-add still asks me for the passphrase, but when I try any operation that requires the key, the dialog pops up again. How is it possible to get ssh-add to work, or (preferably) get rid of the dialog?

Debian Multimedia :: System Freezes When Closing The Lid With GNOME

Jul 5, 2015

I have configured my system to suspend whenever I close the lid, by using the Power Management applet provided by my desktop manager (see my later comment). However, sometimes, when I reopen the lid, I see that the laptop is switched on but it won't resume, while the CPU heats up. I must shutdown forcefully. What could be causing this?

I have found this thread [URL] .... in regard to OpenSUSE. Is it relevant for Debian as well?

System info:
- Debian GNU/Linux: 8.1
- Linux Kernel 3.16.0-4-amd64
- MATE desktop 1.8.1
- GNOME Shell 3.14.4

Clarified that the suspend is a user-level setting.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-panel Has Gone Berserk - Keeps Closing And Re-opening?

Feb 20, 2010

I have an older Gateway P4 computer running Ubuntu 9.10. I had removed the nm-applet from the systray because I wanted the system to have a static IP. That was several months ago. Today, unthinkingly, I tried to re-add the icon by going into System -> Preferences -> Start-up Applications. I put check in the box next to "Network Manager", then re-started my system. However, when my system came back up, instead of the Network Manager icon, I had two System Audio icons in the tray. One was actually for the audio; the other one just said "Notification Icon" when I put my mouse over it. Again, without thinking, I clicked on "remove from panel". That's where my problems have begun. As soon as I did that, the top and bottom bars disappeared, then reappeared. Except now they're doing that constantly. My machine has become totally unusable. I did manage to turn it off and re-start it, but it comes right back to doing this again.

I can remotely log in from another system (which is where I'm typing this message from) and see that, according to "top", the "gnome-panel" is running at anywhere from 30 - 50% of my CPU. I can provide any logs or other information necessary since I can access the system remotely.

Ubuntu :: Gnome / XORG Freezes When Closing Laptop Lid

May 17, 2011

Gnome (or XORG, I'm not sure which name to give it) freezes up not always, but about once every 24 hours after I close the laptop's cover/lid. I know this happens when I close the lid rather than open it judging by the time the clock is locked at. The cursor will move around on the screen, but noting will react to it in any way. Other services such as FTP and Samba still work just fine when the computer is "locked down". Without more details to why the problem is occurring, I have no idea what to search for or where to get started solving the problem. I have attached the XORG logs (found in var/log) in case they are of any use.

General :: Single Click To Activate Items - Gnome - File Locate Dialog

I have changed the preference in the Nautilus file manager/browser to "Single click to activate items" and it works.

However, when I run an application, say Totem Movie Player, and select Movie/Open I am presented with a Nautilus like file navigation dialog. This is a common dialog to most Gnome applications - probably part of Gnome. Problem is, the dialog does not respect my "single click..." preference.

I have tested this in Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04 alpha 2 and CentOS 5.4 - I do not think it is distribution related.

Fedora :: ANSI BBS In Gnome Terminal ?

Sep 24, 2010

I am a former Sysop of a BBS and currently resurrecting the BBS. I have been looking for a way to get Gnome Terminal in Fedora 13 configured to support ANSI BBS emulation.

Back in the DOS days, we just loaded ANSI.SYS and ran our terminal software (like Procomm Plus or Qmodem), but I am hoping someone has done this and can help me set it up.

I have already tried Qterrm and the "latest" syncterm. Neither of these worked right. Syncterm hasn't been updated since 2009, so I really don't want to mess too much with that one.

I know you can terminal.app in Mac OS X to do it, so I figure we can too. I REALLY want gnome terminal to be the way to do it.
