I used the search feature first to try and find the same issue, and found nothing that truly matches what I'm experiencing.
Here's the current issue:
I'm supposed to run this dbgl file (front end for dosbox) in terminal like the tutorial i'm viewing says, but everytime i click "Run in Terminal", the Terminal shows up for a split-second and then disappears. Nothing else shows up. Nothing else opens.
I have Fedora 12(Constantine) i686 installed on my PC as my O.S. i got a porblem that when i was trying to install the a bundle(NetBeans IDE 6.8 with JDK 6 update 20) after sometime my PC restarted itself due to electricity problem. When it was started i saw the icon of NetBeans IDE 6.8, then I tried to open it, but all in vain. A screen opens for a few seconds and then it disappears. I think it is the problem of improper installation. And now I m totally unable to uninstall that bundle.

i already set up a shortcut to open the traditional terminal Window, also i know of the full screen terminal window by pressing ATL+F1 but as I am reading a tutorial I would find it convenient to simply type above the screen while reading the bottom

I've been using Ubuntu 10.04 for almost a year now...and I'm still an ignorant noob! (....a testament to the simplicity of modern Linux- it's made me lazy) I downloaded a driver for my new scanner- see here: [URL] I extracted the tar.gz, and double clicked the "install.sh." and got it to run in terminal.....then selected my options (i.e. "stand alone" and "Ubuntu"....but instead of the terminal showing that the driver was installed or anything, the terminal just disappears!

There is a process still running in this terminal.
Closing this terminal will kill it.
Nothing is running it's complete, so I have to close the box then the terminal closes. I know I'm a perfectionist. how to get rid of this?

All it shows is a flashing cursor, and I have to press ctrl+c to get that command prompt prefix to show up. I'd like to know how to fix this. xsession-errors shows nothing useful regarding the gnome-terminal.

But when i write "sudo nautilus" it open the nautilus with new config settings. This means there is a problem on my system ? (when i open the firefox with "gksudo", it is using as new user (root user's) config files but nautilus is opening with the root user's files also with "sudo").

With 'ps' I can see that the Conky process is still running, it just isn't drawing itself anymore. I don't know what exactly triggers Conky to disappear. Does this have something to do with Unity?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy family uses Ubuntu on two separate laptops. What happened on each of those laptops with the last ~10 days was that the top panel disappeared. I don't know what lead up to the disappearance on the first one, but this is what happened on the second one:The user closed the lid while Ubuntu was running. I don't know whether Ubuntu is set to sleep or to hibernate when the lid is closed, but regardless of that doing this never caused problems before. Yesterday when the lid was closed and then opened and the user logged back in, the top panel was missing. Still missing after a reboot. Had to be rebuilt.
Both laptops on which this happened are running 11.04 using the classic interface.Perhaps related is that on the first laptop the sound volume adjustment icon disappeared. I tried to add it back in but it's not in the list of widgets or applets or whatever Gnome calls them. How do I add the volume slider back into the panel?Is this a known problem?Is there a fix or a way of preventing this from happening again?I don't use Ubuntu, but I have direct access to these machines so I can run things and get info if you need such.
every time i play a file, vlc opens a new window for that file and does not close the already running file... I find it inconvenient to close the previous window in order to listen to a new song.
Is there any way to automatically close the previous file as soon as another is played?

However after a second or two the window closes and then will only let me vew the files.Does anyone know how I can fix this so that the SD card is able to be written to?The lock is not on the SD card, and under permissions it states that I have permission to create and delete files.I am using an up to date version of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04I have tried searching for a solution but cannot find anything relevant that works

I've just allowed Ghostery to update to version 2.3. Now every time I open my browser (Firefox), a Ghostery tab opens after my homepage tab opens. How do/can I prevent this (the opening of a Ghostery tab in Firefox) from happening?
Edit: what is popping up is a "Ghostery Configuration Walkthrough", a setup wizard. I've looked on the Ghostery forum; some are seeking ways to get around this wizard; but, so far, no answers. A Google search didn't produce anything either. So, I guess I'll run the wizard and see what happens; even though there are no settings that I would change.
When clicking on the Home Folder, K3B opens up. This also occurs on all icons under Places.
We have tried uninstalling K3B and the system is ok. But when you install K3B the problem comes back.
I have a win7 laptop and installed a dual-boot ubuntu 10.10. I'm using firefox & thunderbird, shared between windows and ubuntu (default profiles are on a fat32 disk that is shared between the two OSs). I can mount the fat32 disk as usual, but I can't get firefox OR thunderbird to start unless I start them from a terminal using 'sudo'. This is kinda strange. I used to do this all the time and never had a problem before.
I installed firefox, then did:
cd /etc/firefox
sudo firefox -P
in the profile manager, I set the profile file etc, but when I open firefox without doing 'sudo firefox', it hangs up and cannot find the profile. Why do I have to use 'sudo' to open firefox or thunderbird?
It works fine on my other laptop, but I've deleted & reinstalled ubuntu 3 times on this laptop and still have the same problem.
If Skype is already running, pressing its shortcut starts a new sequence rather than opening the one already running. Is there a way to change it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using rsync to create rotating snapshot style backups of my web files and sending them via SSH to a remote location in order to burn them for offsite storage. This is all working perfect. The remote machine is a Windows Server 2003 which has data that I combine with my web files before burning. I have cygwin installed on the remote server in order to archive and compress the entire backup using tar. (This is not a post about cygwin, I just thought I would mention it in case anyone was wondering how I was running Linux commands after transferring it to the Windows box). After compression, the backup is over 12gb. The next step in my process is to split this tar.gz file into smaller chunks in order to burn them to DVDs. I use dual layer DVDs which are 8.5gb storage size.
I also use cygwin to split the tar.gz into multiple 2gb files using the split command. When I burn them, I only put 3 files on each disk totaling 6gb to leave some padding in case this was a problem. The burn completes and says successful, although it errors out when in verification. I have tried this multiple times and it seems to fail verification at the same point every time which leads me to believe that it has something to do with the data. I have also done tests such as creating smaller backups with completely different data and brning that to a CD-R which worked fine, so I'm convinced this process can work, I just cant get it to work in the right situation. I have also tried burning one of the 7 split files to a dual DVD which also worked fine. I'm wondering if their is a chunk of data that is causing this problem in one of the other split files?

After rebooting the computer the USB external HDD I use for backup appears and is accessible at /media/OneTouch 4
A few minutes later I check and it's unmounted itself (apparently) because it's no longer there.
Restart the computer and it appears for a while once again, then disappears.
