I've got Ubuntu 10.10 loaded on my HP mini, and haven't had any problem with wireless connection before. But since I've started going to my local community college, I've been completely unable to connect to the campus-wide wireless network save for once. I don't know anything about the network other than that it has no encryption.
I have only attempted to connect, thus far, using Ubuntu's built-in autoconnector. Is there a way that I can see what issue it's having, maybe get an error output? The auto connector can't seem to negotiate a DHCP lease, it just times out trying to talk to 255.255.255.255 on port 67. I can't think of why this would be, no one else I've talked to with a laptop has any problem connecting. Is there some, more sophisticated method of working out an IP address that Windows/Macintosh knows to do and Ubuntu doesn't?

discover HOWTO for an on-the-fly "campus" wireless network? I will be part of a large youth sports event spread over several acres of grassy fields. I need a wireless network for the event operations and administration. I want to operate a private wireless lan, "under the stars" with a few puddles of kiosks participating.
Some of my thoughts:I need some sort of antenna for outside use with wifi.
I need a primary wifi access point.I could use a wifi router & access point to connect with the primary for each kiosk puddle.I could use a pair of wifi router & access point boxes, with directional antennae, as point to point.phone and tablet and pda and laptop boxes, in the hands of staff, could use this private wifi lan for event operations.I could put a LAMPP or XAMPP server someone on this lan for event operations
The server could have a connection to the public internet somehow
If I used one of the linux open-source wifi box, hotspot images or similar, I could manage this lan as a group of steamer-trunk, drop and setup stations.

My workplace recently switched to Active Directory for our netdisk space (I work at a University in the US). The "only way" (recommended) by our IT department is to use a cifs protocol. I've had absolutely no luck with that at all. However, it turns out that there is secure WebDAV protocol setup which works well on campus. If I'm off campus I have to connect via a VPN connection; our school uses Cisco Anyconnect 2.3.0254. It works well for me to connect to a printer, etc on campus.
Here's my problem: I can't connect to my netdisk space from off-campus using the Secure WebDAV bookmark that was working oncampus, even when I am connected via the VPN connection. I am using UFW. Is there a port I need to open up, or am I missing something else?

I have a problem which is connecting automatically to my spwireless. On my windows, my schools provide me the disc which contains several .cer files and a automated batch files to copy the .cer files to the root folders. I can choose to use the other network but in using that, i have to manually connect compared to using the spwireless. Anyway, my problem is that, how do i add the .cer files and to where so when i connect to the network it will look there for the cert. Because when i manually connect, only one cer can be chosen.

I recently went back to Linux on my netbook because Windows 7 was too laggy (1gb of RAM, go figure). I've never been able to connect to the protected wireless network on my campus without using Windows, though, so I was hoping someone could help me finally get that figured out.
The school has a how-to for connecting to the network using various operating systems, including Linux, here (scroll down to the bottom to choose OS). After following the guide through the CA certificate it mentions, the network manager tries to connect for a while then just sort of times out and asks me to enter the information again. Using Wicd, I noticed that this timeout appears to happen when trying to obtain an IP (after authentication).
My system: Acer Aspire One AOA150 with an Intel 4965AGN wireless card (installed by me a few months back, have had no problems with the card itself not working). I've installed Kubuntu 9.10 Netbook edition and done all available updates. My campus offers an unprotected "Visitor" network that I can connect to without issue, but they limit what you can access using the unprotected network so I need to be able to connect to the WPA2 one.
I've tried getting help from on-campus IT but keep getting told that none of them know how to use Linux, which makes me wonder who exactly wrote the how-to on their website... The guides on the website are for older versions of Ubuntu, but I figured they would remain applicable on a later-version Kubuntu install.

The more I use Windows, the more disgusted I get with it lol. So I would really enjoy using Ubuntu on campus instead of Windows, but I can't seem to get it to work. They have PDF files explaining how to connect with Windows XP - Windows 7 and Mac OS X, but nothing for a Linux distro. Here is the link to the PDFs [URL], and here are the settings I've tried to use to connect [URL] . I know that the CA is right (unless I need to us the Ubuntu version).

I upgraded to Maverick over the weekend from Lucid, and at school yesterday, I could no longer connect to the campus wifi network in my office. I have no problem connecting to the wifi network at home, and my phone still sees and connects to the campus wifi network, so I think the problem is with my laptop (Gateway T-6345u), which doesn't even detect the campus network. As of last week, it connected automatically, and now it can't even see the network.

I am trying to connect to the college campus wifi network, but having difficulties in Linux.I am dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10, and I use Google Chrome web browser on both. When I boot into Windows, my laptop connects to the network (as I can see from the taskbar icon) and I can (and currently am) connect in Chrome. However, in Ubuntu, it connects (or so the icon indicates) but Chrome doesn't load any pages. The campus network is unsecured, but once you open the browser, you are prompted with a log-in page (student ID and password) to actually connect. Here is my output for iwconfig:
Code:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"sjsu_campus"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 00:24:6C:BC:D3:E0
Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm

I'm unable to connect to a particular home wireless network under Fedora 9, although I can connect to it using WinXP on the same machine. My Fedora installation is able to connect to my college's unsecured wireless network, so it's not a driver issue I think. It seems to be an authorisation issue, as I'll describe below, but there's one other thing that's bothering me. The SSID for the network I have problems with is for some reason not listed in Network Manager's drop-down list, nor is it in the output of iwlist wlan0 scan. But I'm pretty sure it's not a "hidden" network - I don't know exactly how those work, but I helped the owner of the wifi network in setting it up, and don't remember doing anything that would make it hidden. As far as I can remember, Windows found the network automatically without having to be told the SSID. What's the best way to confirm whether it's a hidden network or not?
Anyway, I try to connect by selecting connect to other wireless network in Network Manager, and entering the SSID. As far as I can tell from the error messages below, the machine does contact the network and attempt to connect, but I'm not authorising myself properly. That may be a completely wrong diagnosis, but hopefully someone can see from the below info whether it's correct or not.I'm not sure which option to use for "Wireless Security": at the time we set up the network, it gave us a Hex WEP key of 26 characters, which is 104 bits. But none of the options in Network Manager's list match that. Here are the options it has, and the error message I get with each one:None - if I select this, it fails to connect, with no error message.
WEP 128-bit passphrase - if I select this and attempt to use my 26-character WEP key, it brings up a new dialog, saying "Passwords or encryption keys are required to access the wireless network [SSID]." It has a drop-down box labelled "Wireless Security", but this time the only option is "None", and the connect button is disabled, I can only click cancel.
WEP 40/128-bit hex - as above.
WEP 40/128-bit ASCII - The connect button is disabled when I try to use the WEP key, as the string is too long. Despite the fact that it says 40/128-bit, it actually accepts 5 and 13-character strings (40 or 104-bit). Since I've got a 104-bit hex key, I tried converting it to ASCII, but it consists of mostly unprintable characters, so I'm not sure there's any way to actually enter it into the textfield. I might have done something wrong here, so I've put my code below to see if anyone can point out a mistake.
LEAP - requires a username, not applicable here I think. Windows doesn't need one, and we don't have one from when we set the network up.Dynamic WEP (802.1x) - requires username, private key and various other things, all N/A WPA & WPA2 Personal - Brings up a dialog with the same text as for "128-bit passphrase", but this time "WPA & WPA2 Personal" is the only option in the drop-down list, instead of "None". It asks for a password, so I just enter the hex key again - now it asks for the password for the Gnome Default Keyring, which I don't think I've ever set up. Don't know if I can go any further with that, but my understanding is that since we were given a WEP key when we set up the network, WPA will be N/A.WPA & WPA2 Enterprise - as Dynamic WEP. N/A.Hopefully that's enough info that someone can help diagnose the problem. Some of the behaviour of Network Manager described above doesn't make sense to me, and I'm wondering if it's buggy.

I'm running ubuntu lucid and i was thinking in purchasing one or more extra wifi cards to try to configure my computer to manage different conections at the same time, with different isp's. The thing is that I'm not quite sure if what i want to do is actually possible.
The easiest way that crossed my mind was to try to configure a / multiple virtual machines that are redirected threw proxies to ubuntu and try to configure that each proxie port goes threw a different internet gateaway. This way i might be able to divide threw different sessions of JDownloader, installed on each virtual machine, the things i want to download. The negative aspect of this idea is having multiple jdownloader sessions will make my laptop work to almost 100% for sure...
Another thought i have was to make JDownloader manage its downloads in only one session redirecting them to my internet conections; the negative thing is that i think i will have to try to modify its source and learn java...
And well my last possible configuration i had in mind was to try to make ubuntu directly add up all my internet conections manage as if it was one. the negative thing here is that i might not be able to get multiple downloads from some sites
Well, all this where just thoughts, im struggling whether to buy another card or not to try to setup any of this configurations but im not really sure if any of them are actually possible. Is there an easy way to manage this?
I just want to take the most out of my internet conections... if i'm at college i have to options that are quite slow, adding them up with two cards would be great, i might also be able to add a third and a fourth conection. Also if i'm on a coffe and i need some bandwith i could try to make it go with an open network arround, etc.

How can I make iptables allow my windows client to see my PC / smb shares? When I turn off the fedora firewall it just works fine, but how can I manage smb in a more secure way via iptables to work?
Code:
iptables -A INPUT -s 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 -j ACCEPT
But where do I get the correct address from? Will this example allow only 192.168.0.0 (is this a valid IP at all, usable by any PC? ) or anyone in the network (aka 192.168.0.*) to access my share?

I'm using Fedora 14 with gnome as my GUI.As you know , there's gui tool which manages network adapter , either wireless or wired. After every login into fedora , I should click on network manager icon on taskbar and choose System eth0 to establish and enable eth0. I want it to be done automatically.
Previously , I used opensuse 11.4.It has a tool in yast which allows you to choose how to configure your network adapters , traditional or knetworkmanager mode.I can't find this like tool in gnome on fedora.
how I can configure network adapters to start or not during startup?

I got myself into some trouble this afternoon when I thought I would give xmonad a try on my HP mini 210 that runs f14 lxde spin. so, after installing xmonad and dmenu and playig around a bit I found out that my wifi doesn't work. I tried ifup but I get the 'usage: .." response which I have read means that the programm can't find a configuration file for the device (and I am pretty sure that some programm was managing these files for me up until now).
I have tried to run system-config-network, which defaults to the tui version for some reason, I guess at this point that the normal gui is based on the gnome backend or something? Anyway, the terminal version just outputs a bunch of info about the devices that exist on the system (eth1 the broadcom wifi device is also listed) and then exits.
Anyway, in the normal lxde desktop you could use the gnome network manager, I guess this is not the case when running xmonad. So how do I do this? Links to documentation are welcomed. EDIT: some info about how I get to xmonad, the machine uses the standard LXDM login and from there I just select the xnomad window manger before logging in. I mean I am not trying to use it on top of anything else (eg. xmonad/gnome or xmonad/lxde etc.)
