Fedora :: Entire HDD Erased At The Beginning Of Installation?
Mar 3, 2010
I just tried installing Fedora 12 and at the beggining of the install i got this message about my disk which cannot be read until it is initialized, and if i initialize it all data on the disk will be lost. Disk was formated using GUID, and had one HFS+ partition on it. I accidentaly clicked "yes" on that error message, and after realising what I just did (some 2sec later) i pulled out my computer's power cord out.
Now my entire disk is erased, it has no partitions on it, and all data is lost...
How do i retrieve my data from the erased disk, and why did Fedora want to do this to my disk?

Kernel 2.6.21.5, Slackware 12.0
I saved a page from Linuxquestions. It was saved under a filename beginning with '[' (left square bracket). And I now can't delete the file. Unfortunately I cannot send you a screenshot because opening a terminal in the GUI makes ls behave differently. I shall try to describe, assuming the file is in dir '.'. Also let '[SOLVED]foo.html' be the file in question:
Code:
$ ls
<the file is listed>
$ ls [*
/bin/ls: cannot access [*: No such file or directory
$
If I want the hdd to get rid of this file, what should I do? Any hint will be welcome.

I deleted my hd from an ubuntu 10.10 liveCD system by trying to create a new partition table with gparted. I just wanted to restore the partition table and clicked on "create partition table"apply.Now the hole hd is an unallocated file system, so without any partitions. There had been 3 ext4 partitions.
Because I did it from an liveCD, all data should be save? Is there a way to search for partitions on the hard disk and get a new old partition table and write it to the mbr?I searched a lot already (with a very slow mobile internet connection)..

I recently installed Fedora 14 on an old computer which was already a dual boot Windows XP/Ubuntu machine. As there weren't many problems I felt encouraged to install it on a newer dual boot (Windows 7/Ubuntu 10.10) machine. Apart from a lot of bother with the wiFi card, all appeared to be well. However, I decided to boot into Ubuntu to make sure that it worked as before and was disagreeably surprised to get a message saying that Ubuntu only had 12.5 Mb disc space left when previously it was installed on an 80 Gb hard drive.
I have had a look at the drive, using gparted and found that there are two ext4 file systems, one on /dev/sdb1 and one on /dev/sdb3 which have used 2.93 Gb and 500 mb respectively. /dev/sdb4 has an exclamation mark (!) beside it and is lvm2 and occupies 68.15 Gb and appears to be unused.
Would it be possible to shrink this lvm2 file system and expand the one that contains Ubuntu. If so, how can I identify where Ubuntu is located? there is also /dev/sdb2 which is an extended partition of 2.93 Gb as well as /dev/sdb5 which is a Linux swap of 2.93 Gb

I had no problems installing the F13 DVD, but when I chose to install it across a 160 GB and 250 GB hard drives, it happily used both of them for the system and left me 40 GB of storage to play with.... at least I think that is what happened. I kind of had the opposite in mind. I know I could have installed it on one and used the other drive for a separate storage location, but for me, it's just easier to have one big storage/system volume and not have to worry about paths and /dev/sdb/images stuff

I've been using Ubuntu since 7.04 and I've never had this happen. I was at 10.04 and I downloaded the torrent iso of 11.04 and burned it to a CD and used that to upgrade. I don't know if that was the problem, but doing the upgrade that way erased my fstab. When I tried to recreate it, I was getting errors mapping to the fileshares. Turned out the upgrade uninstalled cifs/smbfs as well. In addition to uninstalling wine. After reinstalling, everything is ok.... so far. This was NOT the smoothest upgrade.

I am new to Fedora 12 and was trying to setup a FTP server using VSFTP. I have it installed, but not sure where to go from there. I ultimately would like to have all of my PC( that are on the same subnet to be able to access the ftp server) and possible be able to access the server from outside of my local network.

I burned a copy of Ubuntu 9.10 and decided to use it to build up my little server. All was well initially. The CD booted, the language selection came up (I selected English), then there was the option to Try, Install, boot from first hard-drive, etc. I chose install and figured I'd nuke the original drive since everything that I need is off there. The little Ubuntu logo came up (it was shining/pulsating) for about 5 minutes. This went on for some time (the DVD-ROM spinning the entire time furiously) and then..The screen went black and there was a message saying that there was no input to the monitor (as some monitors are prone to do if you unplug/loosen the cable.) I rebooted, burned new CDs, etc. To no avail!
I have an HP (quite reliable in the past.)
* 2.80 Ghz
* 1 gig RAM

I have downloaded the latest version of Debian for PPC to run on my iMac G3 600MHz 1GB ram. The problem is, is when it is partitioning the HD the computer just shuts down and restarts from the beginning. I don't understand this. I chose it to erase and use the entire disk. The HD is 80GB. I really want to install this OS!

I have a hdd with several partitions.
sda1 - Fedora
sda2 - windows xp
sda3 - win 7
sda4 - ubuntu
I know how to mount each partition, but what I want is to mount sda, not sda1 or sda3. Just sda.So later, I want to make a copy of MBR of sda.As I know first 512 bytes from sda1 are not the same like first 512 bytes from sda.Thats why I want to mount sda and with dd, copy the first 512 bytes.The problem is how to mount sda, if some partition are ntfs and other are ext3?

is there a way to actually download the entire fedora repo? i've a friend with dialup who cannot install big things and i want to just downlaod the repository for him. i know ubuntu has some sort of way of doing this. i tried the following:
Code:
sudo yum --downloadonly --downladdir=~/fedora_repo install *.i?86
but this seems to, aside from all sorts of conflicting packages only get the things i dont have installed.

I was relieved to read online that I'm not the only first-time Ubuntu user to destroy their system beyond repair and wish to uninstall and reinstall Ubuntu. However, all the tutorials I can find on how to do it are for users who have a dual operating system on their computer, especially XP and Vista. Ubuntu is my sole operating system (I decided to give it a try when my computer crashed and needed to be rebooted with a new operating system).
Is there a way to just remove my entire Ubuntu operating system from my laptop and reinstall it? I've already downloaded Ubuntu onto my jump drive and it's all set to reinstall. Tutorials claim that restarting my laptop with the jump drive inserted in my laptop will automatically startup the Ubuntu installation process but it doesn't, and I'm sure it's because I still have Ubuntu on my laptop.
Stats:
Gateway NV52
Formerly Windows Vista, but that was removed and Ubuntu (Linux) is now the sole operating system
Gnome
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

I installed a new 11.04 on my Thinkpad in place of the old 10.10 system, so it replaced the old /home with a new empty one. But I had previously done a partition copy of the original 10.10, complete with /home to a spare HDD so now I can copy that /home in place of the new empty /home. What's the best way to do that? Should I use 'dd'? Should I use Nautilus? Or should I partition-copy that copy of the 10.10 onto available space on the thinkpad 11.04, then manipulate the partitions to consolidate? Maybe create a separate /home partition?

I've just logged in to the desktop and I can't see my old desktop background picture and the plasmoids which were on it (clock, folder view). As far as I can tell nothing in my system has changed.
I'm using KDE 4.5.2 version 9 and been using it since it was released in the KDE stable repo. My system is openSUSE 11.3 upgraded from 11.2 32 bit. I don't have any other non standard repositories except for the KDE stable repo.

What are the possible causes of this?
