View 14 RepliesI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a brand new HP EliteBook 8540w with an Nvidia card. To get the machine to work at all I have to use the proprietary nvidia driver. The downside is that when I use this driver gnome-settings-daemon seems to crash when I start the machine which results in a ugly theme. To fix this I have to run the following command:

After this the theme is re-applied. If I try to run gnome-settings-daemon as my regular user I get the following messages:

I've installed last Debian Stable with Gnome 3 environment and after added my enterprise account into the Gnome Online Accounts it apear into Evolution (but only after i've manually installed evolution-ews package) the problem is that i can't change any adevanced settings like "local synchronisation" into Evolution.
It's like Gnome Online Accounts revert back the settings each time i change it.
is there some wiki page on GNOME or Fedora that list which graphics cards work without problems on Fedora 15 with GNOME Shell? I have tried 3 older cards and they all failed, so I would like to share this info with others so people know which cards to avoid if they want to use full features of GNOME 3 via GNOME Shell.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe gnome-settings daemon was updated today on my Fedora 11 machine and it's now performing all kinds of interesting activities. It's using my CPU a ton. And it's generating lots of network traffic. This appears to be a massive bug of some sort. Anyone know any more details? I haven't found anything yet.

noticed that Fedora 12 made some odd design decisions for default GNOME settings, and I couldn't locate the System->Preferences->Windows menu item to change them back. The design options I'm talking about:
* No icons in menus (System menu for instance has no icons, though there are icons under the Preferences and Administration sub-menus... the root System menu though has none)
* Icons on toolbars are configured so the label text appears to the right of the buttons, so this makes File Explorer in Nautilus look funny to me. I like the text appearing beneath the icons like it has always been up until now.
why the Windows configuration has been removed from Fedora 12? The control-center package provides the bins for all the preferences items except for gnome-window-settings; so is it upstream that did this? Anyway, I had to dig around in the gconf-editor to find where the window settings are kept so I could change them "manually", since the Windows tool is gone now. For anyone else who wants to know, it's under /desktop/gnome/interface in the gconf-editor (namely, keys toolbar_style, buttons_have_icons, and menus_have_icons are the ones I changed).
I have a problem with my Fedora system. Whilst I was messing around with my graphics drivers I managed to totally screw up the system, now my desktop won't start, leaving me with just the command prompt. In order to fix it I will need to get my wireless adapter connected to my home network, this is proving tricky. I understand that NetworkManager is responsible for bringing up the network but unfortunately without starting GNOME I don't have the settings available to me (through the nm-cli) or a way to configure it.
Is there a way to bring up whatever service holds the network settings without GNOME? In the meantime I am looking into alternative ways of configuring NM, perhaps through the DBUS interface? Even so, I suspect that I will still need a settings ervice at the end of it..
Not sure if others have noticed this. When I go into sound settings, click the output tab, select the sound device I want to edit and change the bass levels etc, close the window and go back in all the settings are reset to default and no changes are saved.
If I leave the window open and make the changes they are reflected in VLC for example, but if I close the window it again resets to defaults and my Bass is back at Maximum....
Is this a BUG I should report or is there something I can download to get this configured elsewhere or to fix this issue? I seem to recall something similar in Fedora 14 that was fixed, but I cant remember how I did it now
I am running F11 and would like to use ccsm to modify compiz settings. However; when I modify any settings in ccsm they do not seem to take effect at all. I have tried rebooting etc. I have checked the file /home/*username*/.config/compiz/compizconfig and all that's in there is:

When I log in there are no panels, no menus and lots of other things have gone awry.

I have read lots of articles, deleted various .gconf files, problem remains...
Previously (on Lenny) I would boot my computer and it would happily boot through to the Gnome login page (the pretty graphical one). Now (on Squeeze) I get the plain old text login prompt. So I login normally and try running "startx". It comes up with a black screen and a mouse pointer. Nothing else. Ctrl+shift commands seem to work so I am able to get to another terminal. When I switch back to the first terminal there are just come Gnome startup messages.
I really need to have this working in order to do some "work". give me a sure fire way of either fixing this, even if it means instructions on re-installing Gnome? Normally I could copy log files from my Linux machine to my email computer but with no desktop I find this too difficult and really don't have the time to spend working out how to do it. (I have "work" to do as well). So, just briefly I will summarise the Xorg.0.log file:

I can't get Gnome's Web(browser) (ver 3.4.2) working with flash. I see only a kind of blue box, when I click on it, audio playback starts but not video. I tried this on two machines, one with Intel graphics, second with radeon.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to kubuntu 10.10 and now I can't play songs and sync my ipod outside of gnome. Before the upgrade I was able to access the ipod using rhythm box, it wouldn't be detected at first but if I would click music and then import folder and then click ipod touch under places rhythm box would recognise it and it would be mounted at /home/linux/.gvfs/iPod touch. But now unlike before on kubuntu 10.04, when I plug in my ipod it is actually recognised by the device notifier, but it only recognises it as a camera it has no access to the rest of the file system where the music is located, and their is no eject button in the device notifier to unmount. And because of this I can't mount gvfs unless I unplug the ipod, logout, and log back in into gnome. I tried mounting with ifuse before on 10.04 but it didn't work right, now when i try it in kde I get a whole new error message.

No device found, is it connected? If it is make sure that your user has permissions to access the raw usb device. If you're still having issues try unplugging the device and reconnecting it.

I didn't think that command would work but I tried it because I have no idea where the hell the ipod is mounted or if it's even mounted at all. Is their any way to keep kde from detecting my ipod touch? Or anything I can do in the terminal so I can use my ipod with gtkpod or rhythmbox while in kde.
Giving Gnome DO a try but haven't been able to get any of the plugin's I selected to work. Also, any opinions on Cairo Dock vs DO in Docky mode? Which is more MAC like? Cairo has lots of settings and options seem like too many?

I recently switched my desktop environment from KDE-4.3.4 to GNOME-2.28-2 and I did that by installing most of the gnome-packages and uninstalling pretty much all of the kde-ones. After reboot everything worked fine except the file browser that doesn't seem to care about my feelings. It launches and when I try to kill the process the status changes from sleeping to uninterruptible and then back to sleeping. The only way is to reboot but that isn't a solution.Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am using Fedora 13 x86_64 on a Acer Aspire 7730ZG laptop with: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G98 [GeForce 9300M GS] (rev a1) I have kmod-nvidia-2.6.33.6-147.2.4.fc13.x86_64-195.36.31-1.fc13.2.x86_64 installed from rpmfuison when I plug in the hdmi cable to the tv, my tv says the resoultion is at 720p, and I can not get any of the resolutions settings to look right on seperate x screen with the nvidia X server settings gui. my tv is a vizo 42inch. also another question is their a way to set the video card to output at 1080? this might be part of my problem?

After several releases fighting with pulseaudio, F11 finally worked almost OBO, after going to system->preferences->advanced sound configuration and setting all the input volumes to the maximum. But now there's no advanced sound configuration tool, and I just can't find anything to make it work. Skype isn't working, nor is gnome-sound-recorder. I do record some static, but nothing more. By the way, I'm on an Acer Timeline 3810T.

Instead I get: "help, remove from panel, lock panel". I dont have this problem with anything else on the top bar.

Turns out I have to install package alacarte and then go to System > Preferences > Main Menu
I just installed Fedora 13 on a new computer and the timed login for gnome does not work unless you manually select it. This surprised me as I upgraded a separate computer to Fedora 13 and the timed login feature still correctly functions and does not require user interaction.

Adding the above to /etc/gdm/custom.conf only adds an Automatic Login option that you have to manually select and then the computer will login. I would deem this less than useful.

I know you can substitute the timed login with the automatic login and it will instantly login, but this provides no option to select another user. I have been unable to find any information why this feature no longer works and wanted to know if there is a new way or if anyone knows why the timed login feature was crippled.
Editing the profile in gnome-terminal has absolutely no effect on the appearance. I can change background color, transparency, image, etc. in the profile edit window, save changes,and the _actual_ terminal appearance does not change at all. I did make sure to switch to the edited profile after editing -- to no avail.The default navy-on-light-blue isn't bad, but the light-green default for executables is effectively completely invisible on the light blue background.Is this a bug? View 3 Replies View RelatedSetting up CentOS 5.5 on my laptop. After installing the synaptics driver, I am able to get a functioning X session without any problems (I'm using startx for testing). There are however two problems: 0/ mouse cursor is slow as snails and 1/ GNOME is fouled up.
- I've tried enabling SHMConfig in my xorg.conf file, and have also tried the HAL thing here. Either way synclient tells me to jump in a lack. I should be able to set suitable adjustments in xorg.conf, but running synclient -l to see what it's currently using would be much faster than hours of trial end error. As Google totally fails to provide anything helpful and I see nothing handy in documentation beyond the 1-line edit to xorg.conf I've already done, how in the universe do I actually enable SHMConfig to synclient's satisfaction? EDIT: scrolling doesn't work either, so access to synclient is even more important; on the upside I have manually tuned the mouse speed by T&E.
- GNOME was installed through the "GNOME Desktop Environment" and "GNOME Software Development" groups (yum groupinstall GNOME*) after net' installing CentOS. It has been startx'd through gnome-session. On startup I get a string of Windows: one is a dialog saying that there was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon with a last error message of "Failed to execute dbus-launch to autolaunch D-Bus session". The other two are dialog windows gripe about mail notification. Several icons are missing but gnome otherwise works fine, as long as I do nothing that requires SETTINGS. Searching the web and documentation hasn't helped here either, so how the flub do I fix that?
I expect to be using blackbox or something lighter most of the time, but as GNOME is the default.... it better be working!
