Fedora Installation :: Exclude Remote Admin Tools
Mar 30, 2011Sorry if this is the wrong place to inquire. I was wondering if it is possible to install fedora without any remote administration tools in particular SSH?

View 5 RepliesIn F11 the administration menu had more things in it IIRC. Seems that in F12 a lot of tools are missing.Specifically the SELinux config tool is missing, but getting the rest of the menu back would be nice. I can't remember what it had but I'm sure I'll need them at some point.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI login as normal user. I can 'su root' fine - password authenticates. However, If I try to run System->Administration->Users/Groups, when it asks for root password, it is rejected. When I run updater, it reports failure to authenticate, but doesn't even ask for root password beforehand. Is there a cached password someplace?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed the VNC server by following [URL] (Remote login with vnc-ltsp-config). Everything works great for normal user but when I try to access admin tools in the GUI, nothing appends. If there is a way to authorize the root to log via VNC viewer.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had to uninstall f10 from my system because it would lock up my system anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes into using it and noone could tell me why.
NOW, I put 9 back on my system and after it updates everything, it locks up again. it does give me the option of the new kernel and the original install's kernel and if I choose the original to boot with, I don't have any problems.
SO, is there any way to fix it, OR to exclude the kernel and initrd from being updated?
we have 2 mbps broadband link for our internet connection configured on redhat 9 linux which acts as a proxy server with static ip.i had done dmz for the 2 pc's and given access of the 2 pc's to our client. The client use the remote admin software installed on their pc and connects to our static ip and from the static ip the request goes to inside our lan pc's which is configured with diffrent port and ip address for the remote admin.basically my question is that when they connects our internet goes slow and when they are not connected the internet works fine so i want to know how much bandwidth they are using or what command to check the bandwidth of this connection?

I have an SSH server running on my netbook on port 2222 and a VNC server running on 5901. The router only has port 2222 open to the laptop.
I use Connectbot on the Droid to connect t my Ubuntu via 2222 with a local port forward enabled 5901 to 192.168.1.111 (laptop IP) port 5901.
Once the conenction is established, I use VNC viewer on the Droid and have it go to 127.0.0.1 port 5901 (to be forwarded by Connectbot over the SSH pipe).
I want to take it a step further. I want to administer my DGL-4500 router without having to remote control the laptop and open firefox. My router doesn't allow SSH.
An obvious solution (in my small mind) would be to install a simple web server process on say port 8080 and do a port forward on the phone to 8080. Then whenever that port is hit, I would want some process that would take the request and pop that person over to 192.168.1.1...
Any ideas on how I could do this OR a better idea on how to do it better without opening the router to the outside world?
I am theorizing I could do a VPN server instead and then find a VPN app. With a VPN, I am theorizing once again I owuld assume an IP address in my home network and then just type 192.168.1.1 on my phone and connect in that way?
I have Linux computers that are often on client networks inside firewalls . They have access to the internet but I can't access them directly. I don't want to have to get the client to mess with NATing , etc . I have written a system that uses XMPP to allow me to send commands to the computers and run simple console commands which often time is enough. These are things like run a report and ftp up to server, restart a process, give me a process list. It works OK, but some networks even block this (Googletalk is not universally loved for some reason)
I am wondering if there is a prebuilt system that allows me a computer inside one firewall (say a standard adsl modem created one) communicate in some way with a computer inside a network created by another adsl modem. I could see some sort of console like logmein or pc anywhere but as much as I have looked I can't find anything. I have considered writing a cheap and cheerful system in http or even a TCP system using asyncore in python but there must be something existent. I have a server on the web that could be used as an intermediary, relay type thing. Basically some sort of chat server for consoles is what I am thinking about. Is there some sort of SSH voodoo that I could bridge/tunnel/vpn through.
I have Fedora Directory Server with SSL running on my Linux Machine. I can see th output:
Code...
This shows that 636 port is open. But When I am attempting to this Linux Server from one of Windows Desktop it says "LDAP is Down".
I selected LDAPv3 and LDAPv3, hostname and SSL/TLS tried fetching base DN but it dint work.
i have created on folder in my server to upload some regular states. I want that user can modify or upload already stored files. but, should not upload any unwanted files orfolders.for that i want to use "rm" command as auto scheduler (putting this in cron tab.so that all files will be removed except some required files / folders for which this upload facility is activated. users are using secure-shell for uploading data.

I have icu and libicu installed. I've done a find across the whole filesystem and sure enough I don't have an icu-config file. There doesn't seem to be an icu-devel package - at least I can't find it if there is.
I installed Fedora 10 on an 8 GB USB-stick using the creator-software for windows. Sadly I am not so familiar with linux but as I am now trying Fedora on a friend's advice I really start to like it
Unfortunatels there ist a problem: I wanted to compile a driver for my wlan-card but got the known error "make: command not found". So I searched this forum and found in this thread that I need to install the development tools. But when I try to do so by typing yum groupinstall "Development Tools" it first starts but then cancels with an error message claiming missing dependencies to a perl package:
Quote:
Fehler: Fehlende Abhngigkeit: perl = 4:5.10.0-49.fc10 wird bentigt von Paket 1erl-Pod-Escapes-1.04-49.fc10.i386 (installed)
Due to my ignorance I tried yum install perl but this also fails with the same error message I am sure it is just a bite for you but I don't hava a clue right now By the way I already can call the command make install now for the wlan-card driver. It also starts but fails and says:
I have Vmware Fusion 2.0.6 (196839) running on my MacBook Pro. I installed Fedora 11 on the fusion and it works fine. The only problem that I am having is that when I try to install vmware tools, by runnning ./vmware-install.pl in the terminal, I am prompted with this message: What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
If I press Enter, the same message pops up. I am fairly new to linux, and I am just setting this up so I can set up a web server on this virtual machine for testing purposes.
the kernel that I have running is:
root@box1 include# uname -r
2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i686.PAE
I'm trying to install VMware Tools for the sake of the SVGA driver alone. For the life of me, I cannot get it to work. I'm able to run ./vmware-install.pl but when it comes to configuring it that's where I've run into trouble. I've been trying and trying and trying and trying all morning to get this to work and I'm getting very frustrated now. It keeps asking me, "What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?" I've Googled this and read several threads on the issue, tried every conceivable path I think it might be and it keeps coming back again and again saying "The path "<path>" is not valid. Would you like to change it?" WTF!? Can somebody please tell me what the default location of the C header files is under Fedora 14? Geez Louise I just want to install VMware Tools, for Christ's sake! It shouldn't be this difficult. BTW,

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my Fedora 11 x86_64 computer I have installed OOo 3.1.1 from www.openoffice.org because I need features that Fedora disabled in the repository version. And the latter also shows up in Software Update. Now, I went around and around with this and I know that installing the 1.3.1.1 package will break my OOo. I don't want Software Update even to list the 1.3.1.1 package because sooner or later I will slip up and install it on accident.
Side note: Why does Software Update think 1.3.1.1 is newer than 1.5.1? If it really is newer, someone at OOo needs to learn arithmetic.I think I can add an exclude line to /etc/yum.conf. But I can't figure out the syntax, and I don't know which package to exclude - the one I don't want updated or the alleged update package? Both? Or just the first part "openoffice.org-ure"?
I would like to be able to exclude a certain user name from the list presented by the Greeter. Is that possible? I tried adding:
In the custom.conf file, but it didn't work.
If you need to to exclude one or mode user from your gdm login window you must edit "/etc/gdm/gdm.schemas" and add the user you want exclude from the <key> "greeter/Exclude" (near the other user in <default></default>)
When Fedora could have a gdm config again?

What I'm trying to do at this point is setup VNC so I can remote into the system via my windows xp systems. I have VNC installed on those computer and I was able to get GNOME's remote desktop operating when I log in on level 5 and actually logged into my user account. However, when I'm not logged in on level 5 it will reject connections entirely. Ultimately I want to remote into the system using tightVNC and view the level 3 (command line only) thing, and allow me to telinit - 5 to switch to gui if I need it from VNC on the windows system. This way I don't need a monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged into the server. Right now that's what I'm having to do.
The problem is that it doesn't run in level 3 at all and level 5 (gui mode) doesn't work if i'm not logged into an account. So how can I get this to work at as a constant running server no matter what level and login point i'm at? Ultimately for this Linux admin class I have to setup a working server and I figured I'd get a base setup with VNC support that I could log into from school to work off of instead of having to use the local connection. Once I get VNC working on my network i'm pretty sure I can get it working beyond my local network.
Here's some commandline stuff that may diagnose my issues:
Code:
As you can see I'm having issues with the libstdc++ lib being detected. I have it installed, but apparently not everything is setup properly. I also have an RPM file for VNC and I've tried to install it with the gnome shell but it gives me an error: "Can't install /home/[user]/Download/vnc-4_1_3-x86_linux.rpm as no transaction" I'm not sure what that means. When I use the command line I get this:
Code:

But when again it asked to register a user, I didn't registered any user (left all fields blank) and pressed on "next".After a reboot, now its asking to log in but there is no username except the "other" option. When I'm clicking on other option its showing a field to put a Username (I tried to leave it blank, used root, admin, etc etc etc but no luck) then another box is coming and asking for password, its not taking that password which I set as root password.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhat is the easiest way to make it so that these transferred files will not be completely locked out and require me to go and change them one by one sohat i can access them without having to go root. Also the "apply to all subfolders and files" doesn't work. Also trying to set the SELinux rule to "userspace" doesn't do anything else. Basically i was trying to do just that transfer my $home folder over to fedora but now it's being a bit odd towards me with making everything require root access and not letting me read/write all files and folders within them.
