From the GUI, there is an option in the network settings "Automatically obtain DNS information from provider", just wondering how do we set or disable the same option through the command line, which files do we have to modify?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI need to disable the automatic power-off on shutdown so I can just withdraw the power myself. The reason for this is that the machine should power on itself when it gets power (which is accomplished by Resume on Power Failure in BIOS). I learned that I can turn off ACPI and APM by using the corresponding boot command options. Does this have any negative effect other than disabling standby etc.? Is there another easy to accomplish solution for this problem (maybe using linux from a readonly partition and make sure all programs are closed before I withdraw the power)?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 insists on automatically logging me in without asking for my password. The only thing is, I've disabled auto login and it shouldn't be doing that.
When I first boot up Ubuntu all I have to do is select my username, no password required to log in. I want the login screen to prompt me for my password for better security.
Here are the settings I already have:
System - Administration - Login screenSet to "show the screen for choosing who will log in"
System - Administration - Users and GroupsI am the only user I have an Administrator level account "Don't ask for password on login" is unchecked, i.e. it should ask for my password on login. If I create a new user with the same settings, that user gets asked for its password. But I don't.
Surely this should be enough to disable automatic login.
I have enabled automatic login in Lubuntu, and have now added a second user, I want to DISABLE the automatic login, or perhaps change the default login. The usual Ubuntu admin window for this does not appear to be available. Where in the conf files this setting is, and or whether there is a GUI that controls this.

I have explicitly disabled this function in (KDE) System Settings --> Advanced --> Removable devices. It doesn't matter - as soon as a USB device is plugged in the system mounts it as root.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. I've created two user accounts, one for admin purposes and the other for standard users. At boot up, I have the option to pick one of the created accounts or select "automatic login." When I select automatic login, it logs me into the admin account. I've double checked that the "don't ask for password" option is not selected on either account.
The only thing unusual that I did was select the "don't ask for password" option during the install, and then later (after the install was complete) decided that's not what I wanted and unchecked it.
I need to accomplish one of two things. Either change it so the auto login applies to the standard user account, or remove the auto login option from the login screen altogether.
ubuntu 10.04. My computer is left on all the time. My computer's screensaver comes on 10 minutes after last keystroke. Which is fine. However, when I return to use the computer and disengage the screensaver, ubuntu ALWAYS requires my password to continue. How do I stop ubuntu from asking me my password everytime I wake my computer up?

- DHCP is in use to give machines IPs
- Machines go up and down all the time
- All IPs are on a certain subnet
- VMs update DNS (we don't go by IP)
- SSH is in use
I would like to disable StrictHostKeyChecking only for this subnet, because IPs change all the time and editing known_hosts usually only works for a few days before the IP changes again, and once I get enough entries, there are tons of conflicts.
I tried the following in ~/.ssh/config:

View 3 Replies View RelatedDuring installation I set eth0 to use dhcp to get an IP address. I then installed gnome and networkmanger which handles my interfaces and works fine. But during bootup the system pauses for 5 seconds or so while it polls for dhcp. It then times out and gives me a 169.254.xx which is then replaced when networkmanager starts up at the end of bootup.
How do I stop the polling to cut out the 5 seconds?
I've been using slackware for many years. I think I started with Slack 8. I know how to configure the network, I've had this same POS Dell computer for a few years now but the other day I tried to go to a different distro (first mistake) everything worked fine but it was not for me. Once you go slack you never go back! Anyway I had slack on here prior to the change and it all worked fine. I'm running slack 13 and all of a sudden my network is slow as balls! I set it up as I always have so I did some research and tried a few things, nothing worked. So i enabled DHCP and its fine now.. I have a dell xps 420. onboard intel nic. worked fine when i first installed slack 13. Anyone have any clue what to do? I would like my static IP on this machine.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having mysterious wired network problem with my Karmic/9.10 machine. It hasn't been in network a while, but now I finally got the cabling done. I can't get the IP from dhcp server (TW-EA510), and static settings doesn't work either. Fresh cabling showed OK 1Gb connection on tester, and win7 laptop works fine. I even tried with long cable though the rooms, but it doesn't help, so it definately isn't the new cabling.

Motherboard is some old Lanparty with two ethernet ports, NVidia CK804 and Marvell 88E800 rev 13 Gigabit netwok adapters, neither of them works. At least another of them has been worked earlier when I last got it wired. It's been a while, so I'm not sure which one of them and with different router if that matters.
I've stopped/killed/uninstalled all power related stuff like powernow, powerd, upowerd, acpid, gnome powermanager also turned off APM and ACPI support in bios. And after that I still have a problem: My display's backlight turned off after a long period of inactivity and there is no way turn it on. (Sometimes kill of Xorg helps, sometimes alt-ctrl-f1/atl-control-f7 however I need about half hour to get my backligh back). How to check I indeed removed all power related stuff.

alt tab doesnt allow tabbing into the sub-groups..you CAN although use the arrow keys combined with alt-tab, and eventually find your way down into the hierarchy, and to the right email. this is much too much work compared to a simple alt-tab once, like most other situations.i did notice an option to disable touchpad while youre typing in the settings. is there a gconf entry to adjust the delay? or how many keys need to be typed before its disabled?
problem there, is that if i hit return, or esc, or delete, or pretty much anything that should just be a QUICK one button press, and back to the touch pad, results in waiting 2-3 SECONDS.

Want I want to do is a quick simple way of disabling my secondary monitor when playing video games or using xbmc to watch movies, etc. I've tried a few applets but they require the xandr function which I think Nvidia doesn't support.
Is there a way to disable this quickly other than loading up nvidia-settings and disabling the monitor everytime. I don't really want to use two seperate x sessions and xinerama due to the fact you can't use compositing.

I built out the new network and everything worked great except our AD server would never get an IP address from the DHCP server (static reservation) and even if I set the IP statically on the AD server it couldn't ping the gateway and noone could log in. After several attempts to resolve this, including bringing in outside help, we where never able to figure out what the problem was.
Now 6 months later I have time to revisit the issue without effecting the live network. I used Acronis and imaged the AD server last Friday, cloned it on to another box with the same hardware, and put it up on the new network that's been sitting unused for the last 6 months. Today when I statically set the IP on the AD server (which is what I want) it connects and I can ping it's gateway 192.168.1.1 and all the way across vlans to a test sales agent workstation at 192.168.8.xxx on vlan 800 but only if I statically assign the agents station an IP address. When I try to get an IP address via DHCP it fails as destination unreachable. Nothing has changed in the last 6 months on the DHCP server but now it for some reason can't ping its default gateway 192.168.1.1. All of the config files are the same as they where left from the post linked above aside from the vlan id's used where changed from 1's to 100's (i.e. vlan 3 is now vlan 300) /etc/network/interfaces

I interpret this as the server receives the request and the client accepting it but the lease does not last long and the connection breaks. what this could be and why the connection breaks? Or my undestanding is totally wrong on how it works and should work? And BTW, where is that README file that's referenced in the message I receive on the client?
