I recently discovered that I could not get gnome-dictionary to perform word look-up on ANY of my Ubuntu systems. I discovered that the problem is not with the app at all, but with the default source; dict.org has stopped functioning as gnome-dictionary expects (and trying to get to the web site just brings up a blank web page; page source is empty). One of the threads I saw in my search provided a different source that is working. It is not as extensive as dict.org's service, but it does work.
Open the Dictionary app, then open the Preferences dialog.
Go to the "Sources" Tab and click on the "Add" button.
In the dialog that opens, change the Description to "Chemnitz Server" (at least this is what I did).
Change the hostname to "dict.tu-chemnitz.de".
I did not mess with the other options.
Once you have done this you can click the "Close" button in that dialog.
In the remaining dialog, you will see a new option for "Chemnitz Server".
Select that, and you will have a working dictionary.
dict.org can soon be returned to its proper functionality.
I was just trying to install some packages at the gpk-application 2.27.2, but they are not compatible. For some reason I can't install anyting. I have Fedora Leonidas. In another forum they told me that my package installer is not the proper for this version
I have downloaded an application for the sake of Monte Carlo simulation calculations from this link [url] and i discovered that i it didn't work in fedora 14 and it worked in knoppix , and i need it in fedora since my simulation software only works under fedora platform , How to make this tar source installed in fedora 14.
I'm running OpenOffice.Org 3.1.1 out of the Fedora repositories. I'm using the UK locales and settings where possible. I can't seem to get the interface in en-gb, and my dictionary keeps recommending the Americanisation of words to me.
Also finally, is there not a grammar checker in OpenOffice.Org? I'm looking in the Language Settings - > Writing Aids and there isn't anything listed under grammar?
Finally, I might as well ask this in case anyone knows why. In the Writer settings I changed the default fonts to the Liberation font family however OpenOffice keeps attaching the Windows equivalents to the end e.g. 'Liberation Sans; Arial' it's really annoying and I don't know why it's doing this.
When I'm typing something on a site the spell checkers (dictionary or whatever) leaves a lot to be desired. Sometimes I am forced to type the word into google's search engine & having it give me the correct spelling. So, is there a way of making this thing "smarter"?
To clarify, say I type in goverment, the checker isn't smart enough to know that I need the "n" - government - (this is just an example word & is not actually the case with it as I can't think of any right now that is) & gives me a bunch of meaningless, non-related words to choose from.
Quote: 8.5.3. Spell Checking To choose a spell-checking language, select it here. You must install gnome-spell, aspell, and an aspell language package (like for example aspell-en for english language) for spell-checking to be available in Evolution. Additional dictionaries are available through your package manager and are detected automatically if you have installed them. To have the composer automatically check your spelling while you type, select Check Spelling While I Type. You can set the color for misspelled words.
i had just installed fedora 12 and my architecture is x86_64. i add dictionary widget on my plasma desktop. in my office i am using internet via proxy. now how can i configure dictionary widget to use the same proxy settings? in my shell i have export http_proxy variables, where else i am suppose to set proxy?
I know probably not so many people here need a English dictionary on Fedora box. But it's worth to documented since the other guides are Ubuntu specific and not usable on Fedora. Due to the old Flash 9 embedded in the Linux version of ldoce5, various problems happen. I came across the following from F11 to F13:
1. Chunky sound (F11) 2. Hang down the pulseaudio server (F12) 3. Completely silent (F13)
I tried installing the legacy libflashsupport with pulseaudio patch however it was deprecated from F10. The simplest and probably ultimate solution is to install the alsa-oss wrapper to re-direct the sound stream to alsa emulated by pulseaudio.
I installed Oxford dictionary by running a .sh script But The application does not appear in the Applications List to be used.I inserted the CD-Rom, logged in as root and executed the setup.sh file. The installation was done into /root/OALD7 folder. The installation processes was completed as successful! How Do I get this Application working?
I installed Fedora 12 64 bit on my HP dx2255 Desktop. The audio was working fine until I ran "Sound Preferences" application to test Microphone, the audio stopped working and the "Output" tab in "Sound Preferences" application showed "Dummy Output". After restarting the Computer audio started working. All of a sudden it stopped working when I tried to run "Sound Preferences" application to test the Microphone. This happens the same way all the time. I am able to get my audio back without restarting the Computer by running the command "pulseaudio --kill", but still the issue persists. I mean when I try to run "Sound Preferences" application to test Microphone, audio stops working and I have to run the "pulseaudio --kill" command or restart my Computer to get the audio back.
I am getting no packages listed in Gnome application manager gpk-application 2.27.2. I have tried 'yum clean all' and get the following error messages.
So I am using Komodo edit, and it thinks that my current directory is /home/username1/ Yet my files are in /home/username1/workspaces/ruby/project1
Why won't Komodo recognize that my working directy is that of the current file? Same with situation when I use Komodo Edit to launch a command ("ruby [complete path+file name]"), ruby can't find its require dependencies unless I give a complete path because it too seems to think it is working out of /home/username1/
I installed 11.4 and it seems to be working fine. To run few windows application I need WINE. I installed WINE using YAST Software Manager. But when I install application in WINE it's not working correctly. The same application is working fine in MINT/WINE.
I have searched the net but can't seem to find answer for this issue. I am using Opensuse 11.4 with KDE Version 4.7.1 and kernel 2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop on an Acer TravelMate 4200.I updated my system yesterday and since that update the default Application Launcher for KDE is not working, when you click on the launch icon you get the "Kickoff Application launcher" balloon dialog but nothing else happens. A sort of a work around for this issue is that I have found when the application launcher is switched to Classic Menu Style then the classic menu works without any problems. I would however like to use the default launcher and not the classic one as it has so much more functionality and is easier to use and navigate
I use a small application called bendometer.jnlp. On my desktop running 10.04 it runs fine after opening with "OpenJDK Java 6 Web Start".
I have installed the same application on my brand new laptop running Ubuntu 11.04 and it was running perfectly until yesterday. Yesterday it hung during the startup and since I killed the hung process it has refused to start again. If I now run it in a terminal using the command
Code: javaws "/home/steve/Music/Bendo/bendometer.jnlp" I get the following errors Code: Unable to use Firefox's proxy settings. Using "DIRECT" as proxy type. Exception in thread "Thread-2" java.lang.InternalError: Corrupt LRU file entries at net.sourceforge.jnlp.cache.CacheLRUWrapper$1.compare(CacheLRUWrapper.java:184) at net.sourceforge.jnlp.cache.CacheLRUWrapper$1.compare(CacheLRUWrapper.java:172)
I am using OMAP-L138 chip which has ARM 9 core and runs linux. The device which I am making stores some data. I have to retirve that data using USB interface. For this, I have to make an application which communicates with the device drivers provided by the ARM linux(which comes with the OMAP L-138 *) so that we can transfer the data stored in the device to a computer.
My question: Suppose I make such an application which makes the host Linux computer detect my device connected at its USB port and then transfer the stored data to the computer. Will windows computers be able to detect my device? What should I do so that my device can transfer data to both Linux and Windows pc?
Well I want install Picasa on ubuntu. I downloaded the deb file and installed it and picasa is also showing in application-graphics, but when i click it nothing happens. And when I right click any image there is no option for open with picasa. And also in ubuntu software center when I searched for picasa in installed program to remove it I found nothing. I cant figure it out how to do this. So as you can see picasa is showing as it is installed but nothing happens.
Just installed 10.04. When I'm using empathy, the spell checker says all sorts of correctly spelled words are incorrect, such as "eventually" and "examples".Does empathy use the system's dictionary or it's own? Is there a way to download a better dictionary?
I'm running Ubuntu 11.4. I've played with different versions of Picasa, installing the Linux version via Ubuntu Software Center and also using Wine. At a certain point I had several versions of the application installed and things were getting. When I search for Picasa in the Unity application search field (clicking the button with the dot in the centre at the top left of my screen) I got several results for Picasa, some of which when clicked would start Picasa and some which wouldn't. When I remove all versions of Picasa both from Wine and native I still get some results for Picasa which don't start Picasa when clicked.
I've got a bit of a problem. I'm looking for a English wordpower dictionary, which is up to date. I am already using Stardict (CZ-EN, CZ-RU, acronyms). I have tried google, but he didn't show anything specific.
I did a previous search before coming here, and I found some alternatives but in very old threads. Though, one of the most mentioned was one called StarDict. What do you think about this one? Is it still good nowadays or are there other alternatives?
