Fedora :: Audio Not Working After Running "Sound Preferences" Application?

I installed Fedora 12 64 bit on my HP dx2255 Desktop. The audio was working fine until I ran "Sound Preferences" application to test Microphone, the audio stopped working and the "Output" tab in "Sound Preferences" application showed "Dummy Output". After restarting the Computer audio started working. All of a sudden it stopped working when I tried to run "Sound Preferences" application to test the Microphone. This happens the same way all the time. I am able to get my audio back without restarting the Computer by running the command "pulseaudio --kill", but still the issue persists. I mean when I try to run "Sound Preferences" application to test Microphone, audio stops working and I have to run the "pulseaudio --kill" command or restart my Computer to get the audio back.
I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.
My wife is reluctant to move from WinXP so I started my own personal campain to promote fedora at home but my wife complains that I "spend too much time fidling with the thing(PC)" and that "it wasn't the case with WinXP" so I =was looking for ways to impress my wife with fedora's capabilities so I flashed her with compiz and dual screen using our old 52" projection tv as a DVR but rhe problem is that my daughter want to watch her DVDs and my wife want to watch a ..... video.I have a system with two Sound card one embedded on the main board and one on a PCI slot and what I am trying to achive is haveing two applications, like two instances of VLC play their sound on the souncard I select per instance, or one Sound card playing VLC and the other playing a ..... video's sound.
I have looked at pulse audio properties and it detects both of my sound cards just fine and it plays wonderfully on either but that is just it... it will pay on either but not both.I have read that you can configure pulse audio to use your second sound card as sorround or duplicate audio but the idea is dicrete audio from dicrete application. Is there such an use case already supported by pulseaudio?So there might be a solution if I disable Pulse Audio but I rather not but I'm open to either.
Strange one. Just upgraded my mother-in-law's computer from 8.04 to 10.04 via the update manager. All seems to be working beautifully except ...
* When I run gstreamer-properties and do an output test I get a test sound through the headphones plugged into the front audio socket of the machine using the 'Analogue Headphones' setting in Sound Preferences. (This rules out dead headphones.)
* When I try to play audio through any app I get no sound through the headphones, but if I change the setting to 'Analogue Output' in Sound Preferences I get audio loud and clear through the speakers which are plugged into the audio socket at the rear of the machine. how the gstreamer-properties test is getting audio to the front socket I guess I'd be getting somewhere.
Every time I open "sound preferences" from either the sound applet or the preferences menu pulseaudio CPU usage goes right up to 100% and proceeds to lock up the entire computer. pavucontrol, paman, and all the other pulseaudio utils work fine, except for ubuntu's sound preferences. It affects a new account.This is my 10.04 desktop that is affected. I have just the default pulseaudio config.
My audio worked completely perfectly running Fedora 14. I upgraded to Fedora 15 and discovered my audio no longer worked. As far as I know I didn't change anything. I do hear random pops and clicks from my speakers every few seconds. It's a bummer because this worked out of the box on Fedora 14 without any screwing around, and now it's totally broken in fedora 15. Everything else about my upgrade has been going pretty well, but life without sound is not nearly as fun and it's frustrating to have something not work that used to work just fine.
Here is some information and things I've tried:
- Just for grins I booted from the Fedora 15 live CD and observe the exact same issue as I see when I boot from my HD (just pops and clicks out of the audio.) - motherboard: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 (using onboard audio) - lspci reports: 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40) - cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep -i codec reports: Codec: Realtek ALC892 (this is what the motherboard manual lists as the audio hardware.) - I've run pavumeter as some have suggested and I see outputs on both left/right channels when audio is playing (but still hear nothing but clicks and pops.) - I've run "alsamixer -c 0" and verified all my levels are maxed out. - I've opened up the sound settings dialog box and made sure the correct hardware device is selected, tried different profiles, tested left/right speakers, still no progress at all. - I know I have the speakers on and plugged into the correct output jack, but just for fun I tried plugging the speakers into each of the other possible jacks, but that didn't help.
I'm trying to get 5.1 surround sound working on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop running Fedora 13 (64 bit), but there is no option for it under "Sound Preferences - Hardware - Profile". There is an option for "Analog Surround 4.0 Output", which does as it says and uses four of the speakers (front and rear left and right) correctly (and the subwoofer as well I think, though not sure if this is done correctly).Running "aplay -L" gives the following:

it looks like it should be possible to set 5.1 surround sound (i.e. I don't think it's a driver issue).Though running "speaker-test -c 6" doesn't quite work as it should - it outputs via the subwoofer on "Center" and doesn't produce any sound on "LFE". But to start with at least - is there a way of manually forcing "Analog Surround 5.1 Output" to be a choice under "Sound Preferences"?
as audacity comes without MP3 support I tried to compile audacity for Fedora 13 myself. The compilation works fine (configure/make/make install) but there is no sound system to choose at preferences/devives/host.
Does anyone ahve an idea what went wrong with compilation or where I can finde rpm files including MP3 support?
I have a toshiba netbook, and I'm running linux slackware 13.The sound card is an HDA intel.So far I've ran alsaconf and configured the above mentioned sound card. I've also gone into the alsamixer and unmuted everything and turn the volume up.I get absolutely no audio.
When I change the "Put display to sleep when in active for" it seems to make no difference. The screen goes to sleep when it wants. Some times in the middle of watching a dvd (after about 10 mins when it is set to 1 hour).Could this be done by terminal, perhaps there is a problem between entering in the GUI and actually telling the machine.
On my system, System->Preferences->Software Updates, as best I can determine, completely ignores the "Check for updates: " setting. It looks as if, regardless of what I set, I get daily checks. Is anybody else experiencing this? Anybody got a fix? I like the idea of having the system check for me, so I don't want to just pitch the program.
I have no problems with the sound card, however, when I connect a PD552 USB sound adapter into a 4 port hub in order to use headphones it simply doesn't work. I posted the problem on the Ubuntu site and received a suggestion to run lsusb from a terminal. I did this but never received any other replies addressing the issue. This is what I receive from the command. It shows up as device 7 but I have no idea of what my next steps are to insure it will work.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10, but so far I've been unable to get sound to work. I know my sound card is Realtek, because I've had to install the HD Audio Codec Driver when I was on Windows. I downloaded the driver for Linux and it is currently sitting in my home folder. When I tried to Code:sudo ./installthe driver, it failed for the following reason:

i recently installed ubuntu 10.4 lucid, and i have no sound. also, the sound preferences will not open so i cannot see if anything is muted. there is a sound preferences icon in the pannle, which has a slider that is doing nothing. videos will not work, and there is no splash sound when i start up my computer.
i am also 15 and new at computers, so a simple, or step by step answer or test would be appreciated.
1) the volume preferences is back, i was logged in as root, and now as my account, and preferences are here, but still no sound. it was also not on mute.

I was tinkering with sound preferences, assuming that there would be something like "Reset to defaults" button, but there isnt. Earlier the sound was fine (not great quality, but it was there), but now its gone. I am attaching the status of my sound preference's hardware, input and output tab as a screenshot.
P.S. I know that most probably earlier in the hardware--->Profile option, "Analog stereo duplex" was selected. But selecting that doesnt work now. Also, isnt digital better than analog ? (why wasnt it something like digital stereo duplex, when I seem to have that ability in my sound card ?)
I have this problem that whenever java is running (eg. Runescape), sound works only in the Java window, and I don't get sound from flash, mp3s or anywhere else.I found several similar threads but most of them were unsolved, and the few solutions didn't work.Note: Earlier, I used to use IcedTea browser plugin for java, which didn't seem to give any sound problems, though was a bit glitchy otherwise. This problem started only after switching to the Java plugin found
The problem is that banshee mutes sound for other apps like flash, the solution is to select alsa for the devices in audio preferences... but don't have that in the list, only "internal audio analog stereo".
This wasn't a problem until i made some updates and got broken sound, to fix it i used the AlsaUpgrade script. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 by the way.
Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 using standard Update Manager procedure. Now I get a sound (thump) in my speakers for almost every button click. The sound theme in System / Preferences / Sound is "No sounds". I would like to completely disable any "activity" sounds from the OS, but nothing works.
I have an Ubuntu 10.10 OS in a VMware player in which I am unable to get any sound at all. The host windows os plays sound so it can't be the sound card.
The default player is rythymbox and I also have VLC media player installed. Neither will produce any sound. When I press the "test speakers" button on the sound preferences hardware tab, there is no sound.
I am having sound issues with iBook G4 running Debain Jessie. I am dual booting Ubuntu_MATE 15.04 and Jessie on the same HD. For PowerpC iBooks and PowerBooks you need to manully load the snd-aoa-i2sbus module in order to open alsamisxer so you can set you PCM Channel. I have done this when I ran Jessie on my PowerBook and sound worked with no issues. Now on this iBook I have ran both Lubuntu and Ubuntu-MATE with sound working by using this method. However when I installed Jessie I loaded the module, got aslmixer to load and set my PCM Channel but no sound.
I installed the latest version of real player in F 12, however when i checked in the Application/sound list not able to get the icon of the real player,
When I tried to install again got confirmation as the application is already installed, nothing to do more.
How to get the icon and get to use the application to play audio and video
Something broke recently on my Fedora 14 system. Up until several weeks ago, the mic worked fine, but now it is no longer recognized.
That is to say, if I tap on the mic, sound comes out of the speakers, so the hardware is working, but it doesn't work under Skupe nor does it show up as an input device under Gnome.
Thinking something may have broke in a recent kernel, I went back to an earlier, but the problem remains (now running 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64, but I have the following installed).
how to get Skype and Gnome to see my mic again?

i got a problem with my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS the sound was working just fine before but now i can't find the hardware (sound card) in preferences.the sound is working just fine in my profile but not in other two.
I have a zoom H2 and I intend to use its usb microphone function.I connected it and it seems to work with xvidcap if I declare /dev/audio1 as the input device. Well.I want to go further and use it for other purposes and before installing jack and other applications I would like to understand why it does no longer appear in the "Sound preferences" under the 'input" and "hardware" tabs as it was the case the day before.
the sound preferences menu, the one that's achieved by system>preferences>sound is completely gone, and so is the volume control that amarok/rhythmnbox connect too, that has that shortcut link to the sound preferences?
I recently manage to make my microphone "work". I open the alsamixer and i unmuted the mic. Easy!!! But as i can hear my voice through the speakers i can't record. Actually i compare the alsamixer with the sound preferences. And what I notice is:
i)When i mute the output volume from the sound icon in the alsamixer is also muted.
ii)The same when I increase or decrease the volume.
iii)But in the input tab if I mute increase or decrease the volume nothing happens!
I can only mute unmute and change volume trhough the alsa mixer!
I use an Fujitsu siemens amilo pa 1510 with ubuntu 10.10 which I install from a pendrive.
