Ubuntu :: Unity Application Search Results Include Non-working Shortcuts?

Jul 12, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 11.4. I've played with different versions of Picasa, installing the Linux version via Ubuntu Software Center and also using Wine. At a certain point I had several versions of the application installed and things were getting. When I search for Picasa in the Unity application search field (clicking the button with the dot in the centre at the top left of my screen) I got several results for Picasa, some of which when clicked would start Picasa and some which wouldn't. When I remove all versions of Picasa both from Wine and native I still get some results for Picasa which don't start Picasa when clicked.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Unity Dash Menu Not Showing Search Results / Buttons Not Working

Apr 29, 2011

I've just upgraded to 11.04 and really like it so far, everything seems to be running smoothly and I had no issues apart from a broken Emerald which I removed (and installed compiz-gnome and then made gtk-window-decorator the default, which fixed Unity segfaulting on Emerald).

My problem now is that when I use the Unity dash to search for something, it takes a while to search and then finds nothing. I'm pretty sure I should have things like "text editor", "gimp", "update manager", so I would think this is some manner of bug.

In addition to that, the following buttons don't do anything if I click on them:

- Media Apps
- Internet Apps
- More Apps
- Find Files

Ubuntu :: Chromium Application Shortcuts In Unity - Not Including Most Of Chromium's Toolbars

May 2, 2011

I often use the option in Chromium to create 'application shortcuts'. These are instances of Chromium that make a website look more like an app by not including most of Chromium's toolbars. I use it for gmail and google docs and spreadsheets and calendar. In 11.04 I have set up Desktop launchers and copied them across to the Launcher (what an odd way to add something to the launcher, why no right-click 'add launcher' option?)

The problem is that the launcher thinks all these apps are chromium (which they are really, but I would like them to be seen as separate apps). If I minimize my gmail window, a little triangle appears next to the chromium icon, not the gmail icon. To get the window back, I have to click on the Chromium icon. Clicking on the gmail icon launches a new instance of it (also tied to the Chromium icon).

Ubuntu :: Synaptic - Mark ALL The Results Of The Search?

May 29, 2010

Open synaptic. Type in the word "Game". Then you have to scroll down through the list of results and mark each one, individually. Is there any way that I can simply mark ALL the results of the search? There is an "Unmark all" button. Can we get a "Mark all" button? It would have to mark only those packages that currently appear in the right hand box.

OpenSUSE :: Apt-Get Search Yields No Results

Jun 5, 2010

I've just installed OpenSUSE. I've never used it before. I typically use apt-get to install applications when using Ubuntu; so I'd like to use it with OpenSUSE. I've read some documentation saying that I need to go to YaST -> Software and search for "apt" or "synaptic." However, both of these searches yield no results. Additionally, using the Software Manager to search for these yields no results. What can I do? When I search for something in OpenSUSE and there are 0 results, I get HTML bold tags around the search criteria where it says there are no results (as in, I can actually see the code for the bold tag).

Ubuntu :: Bash - Open Mlocate Search Results?

Mar 22, 2011

Upon a while of searching, I think I failed to find the correct terms and I'm posting here. I often use mlocate to search for files. For example, if I say

Code:

$ mlocate temp_2.pdf

I'll get two results:

Code:

/home/kmc/Documents/latex/temp_2.pdf
/home/kmc/Documents/latex/test/temp_2.pdf

Now if I want to open one of them, I'll have to either open Acroread and browse to their locations. Or select and copy, and call acroread in terminal like

Code:

$ acroread /home/kmc/Documents/latex/temp_2.pdf

This is tedious to me. I'm thinking of a way of quickly open its search results, I've tried pipes like this but it doesn't work:

Code:

$ mlocate temp_2.pdf | acroread

maybe it doesn't work this way. So what does the trick? What's the name of this trick? I've googled for

Quote:

Linux bash catch output, pipe output, open mlocate results And is it possible to handle multiple lines of output, e.g., can I choose which line of output get forwarded to relative programs?

Ubuntu :: Unity Keyboard Shortcuts For The Four Screens?

Apr 27, 2011

I really like the Unity system in 11.04 Beta 2 and it is so very well behaved - on my desktop. However, there is one area where I am not quite so happy with.

I liked the Gnome tabs along the bottom right where I could click and change windows.

(a) Is there a keyboard short cut to do this? and (b) can I increase the number of screens from 4 to 8?

Ubuntu :: Modify Unity Keyboard Shortcuts?

Apr 30, 2011

However, after upgrading to 11.04, that key now acts like a "Super" key, even though the shortcuts haven't changed. I tried modifying the keyboard shortcuts, but that doesn't seem to do anything for me. I can't figure out a solution.

Ubuntu :: Unity Launcher Not Keeping Webpage (prism) Shortcuts?

Dec 13, 2010

I have recently upgraded my netbook from 10.04 LTS desktop to 10.10 netbook as I really like the new unity feature.Anyway, I have a couple of prism shortcuts that I use for both my personal and work webmail (both are google apps). When I open them I select them to stay in launcher so they are always accessible. Problem is - as soon as I reboot my machine the prism shortcuts disappear from the Unity launcher. All my other shortcuts like chrome, file browser, open office etc all stay...it's just the prism shortcuts.Has anyone else found the same problem? I have searched the forums and can't find anything.PS Just in case any of you don't know, prism is a tool that lets you create a shortcut to any webpage, with a custom icon and a cut-down version of your browser (i.e. no tool bars cluttering the page) so the shortcut almost works like it's own application.

Ubuntu :: Unity Launcher Number Shortcuts Have Disappeared While Holding Super In Natty

May 10, 2011

I've just noticed this morning that the number shortcuts that normally appear when holding the super key to show the Unity launcher are not there. The s, a and f shortcuts remain however. Also, just pushing the numbers that should be there doesn't do anything.

I've just upgraded from Maverick to Natty and things were mostly working fine until this. I'm not sure what changes have happened between now and then and I don't remember any major changes in that period.

I just tried to take a screenshot and opened GIMP to save it and I checked again and they have reappeared. So, I guess the new question is why did this happen? How can I solve this problem if it happens in the future? Should I mark this as solved? I don't really understand what happened either way.

Ubuntu :: Add Shortcuts To Application Menu?

May 7, 2011

I upgraded to 11.04. A app called Pytrainer did not work when downloaded through Ubuntu Software Center. So I downloaded the latest version from their website. It works! However, it did not add a shortcut to the applications menu. Instead, I copied the executable file to the desktop, which is more convenient. But I'd also like it in my applications menu.

How can I do that?

Ubuntu :: Can't Find Application In Unity

May 10, 2011

I just updated to 11.04 today after deciding I couldn't just read about Unity anymore and wanted to experience it for myself. I'll save my thoughts for the Experiences forum; suffice to say that so far I think that it's organized and, for the most part, intuitive.

That said, I am having a problem finding an application that I know is installed. I use Crossover Games to run Steam, and though Steam is running just fine (just played a quick game of TF2 to make sure) I cannot for the life of me find Crossover. In 10.10, it was under Applications > Games. In Unity, it will not show up no matter how I search for it (Steam, however, does with no issues). I have searched for Crossover, codeweaver, cross, code, games, etc, to no avail.

Any tips or comments on how I may find this application? It shows up in my Installed Software in Software Center even!

Ubuntu :: Application Lauch Commands In Unity?

Jul 28, 2011

Back in the good old days of Gnome it was easy to know what commands were executed when an icon was clicked. By editing the application menus one could navigate the tree and check it at each application properties window. The question is: how can that be made with Unity?

Knowing the commands executed for LibreOffice applications, for instance, would be very useful, so I can create shortcuts with XBindKeys. Another thing that one could configure at the application properties window was the icon.

Ubuntu :: Adding Indicators To Unity's Top/Application Panel?

May 1, 2011

I like Unity, and I appreciate Canonical's work in making the desktop cleaner-looking and more intuitive.I think that being able to customize the top/application(?) panel would be very powerful. By this, I mean both adding and removing indicators.I guess the developers are aware of this, and it's easier said than done. I don't know.Personally, I miss the weather and CPU temperature applets of the old Gnome layout.I tried to apply the best guide I've found to modifying the top panel, to no avail.

After I followed the instructions for the addition of three different indicators (weather, cpu frequency and CPU and RAM % usage), my top panel remained the same.I don't know whether the indicators should show up right away or only upon restart. I did restart, though. For both the weather and CPU frequency indicators, the terminal said:Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/fr.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_sour ce_Sources Hash Sum mismatchI don't know how to get around this

Ubuntu :: Change Width Or Size Of Application Launcher In Unity?
