Looking for Offline English-English Dictionary for ubuntu.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI know probably not so many people here need a English dictionary on Fedora box. But it's worth to documented since the other guides are Ubuntu specific and not usable on Fedora. Due to the old Flash 9 embedded in the Linux version of ldoce5, various problems happen. I came across the following from F11 to F13:
1. Chunky sound (F11)
2. Hang down the pulseaudio server (F12)
3. Completely silent (F13)
I tried installing the legacy libflashsupport with pulseaudio patch however it was deprecated from F10. The simplest and probably ultimate solution is to install the alsa-oss wrapper to re-direct the sound stream to alsa emulated by pulseaudio.

I need a English dictionary to search meaning of words. I have done google searches as well as searched this forum but was unsuccessful in finding one. I am trying to find and install an offline dictionary i.e. it should work even if there is no internet connection. It should not be online dictionary.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI recently discovered that I could not get gnome-dictionary to perform word look-up on ANY of my Ubuntu systems. I discovered that the problem is not with the app at all, but with the default source; dict.org has stopped functioning as gnome-dictionary expects (and trying to get to the web site just brings up a blank web page; page source is empty). One of the threads I saw in my search provided a different source that is working. It is not as extensive as dict.org's service, but it does work.
Open the Dictionary app, then open the Preferences dialog.
Go to the "Sources" Tab and click on the "Add" button.
In the dialog that opens, change the Description to "Chemnitz Server" (at least this is what I did).
Change the hostname to "dict.tu-chemnitz.de".
I did not mess with the other options.
Once you have done this you can click the "Close" button in that dialog.
In the remaining dialog, you will see a new option for "Chemnitz Server".
Select that, and you will have a working dictionary.
dict.org can soon be returned to its proper functionality.
I don't know how to add a new server to gnome-dictionary,so I want to remove it.I can't find the package in the Yum Extendor.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe instructions in Evolution say
Quote: 8.5.3. Spell Checking To choose a spell-checking language, select it here. You must install gnome-spell, aspell, and an aspell language package (like for example aspell-en for english language) for spell-checking to be available in Evolution. Additional dictionaries are available through your package manager and are detected automatically if you have installed them. To have the composer automatically check your spelling while you type, select Check Spelling While I Type. You can set the color for misspelled words.

For a month or two I have been trying to install a en_NZ dictionary for Libreoffice. It is available from the openoffice extensions page - which I am directed to by selecting Libreoffice > Tools > Language > More Dictionaries Online.
However for the past month or two this page has had problems. Every time I click on any of the extensions I am taken to an error page that states "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading."
Does nobody maintain the openoffice extension pages any more?
I am a rookie. Yesterday, I intended to install a dictionary with the command sudo apt-get install dict-xdict, but it turned out to fail with the error. Then, I quited with Ctrl+ c, and I did not care much till today because when I want install something else today, the error keeps coming out. Therefore, I think I would better remove dict-xdict first, so I use sudo apt-get remove dict-xdict, but the error still appears:

I have already tries sudo apt-get -f install dict-xdict and it doesn't work out. I am hoping to install some other applications now, but I have not idea what I could do to fix this problem or just circumvent it
New to ubuntu but have use Suse 11.2 a bit. I downloaded a Spanish dictionary to Openoffice on suse with no problems. Under the tools in Openoffice word it says Languages "other dictionaries available". Click on it and it takes you to a site with all types of foriengs language dictionaries. I found the mexico spanish dictionary and it said get it. On suse it downloaded it and it auto installed it with a program in Yast I believe. Anyway the dictionary was in there when I opened office the next time.
Ubuntu is a different story, I can download it but do not know how to install the Spanish dictionary file to the OpenOffice. Is their a program included with ubuntu (gnome) desktop that will load this file and set it up in Office?
Just installed 10.04. When I'm using empathy, the spell checker says all sorts of correctly spelled words are incorrect, such as "eventually" and "examples".Does empathy use the system's dictionary or it's own? Is there a way to download a better dictionary?

If you use that, why would you bother collecting packets? Using a dictionary is basically guessing the encryption-key isn't it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedBefore anybody says it, no, I am not doing anything illegal. I have a problem. I have about 50 rar and zip files. Each of them are locked with one of four passwords. I know the passwords, but I don't know which password is for which archive. Since this is a repetitive task that I will have to do again in the future, I want to write a script (or find one) that will try each of the four passwords for all of the .rar or .zip files in a directory.
I believe the technical term for this is "dictionary attack" - however, my dictionary would only contain 4 words. I know some rudimentary Python. Would it be best to use Python for this or would Bash (which I don't know at all) be more suitable. Does anybody know of a script/app that already does this? I am not interested in bruteforce solutions.
I have a strange question (maybe not a strange question for some people though). I am currently running ubuntu 10.0.4 on my notebook and have noticed that when I am typing up documents, emails, the spell check gives me a lot of red markings indicating that the spelling is incorrect. I have done some tests and it seems that a lot of words (even some well known words which I have confirmed the spelling) does not seem to be included in the standard dictionary.
This causes the applications to think that the words are incorrect and to make some strange suggestions as to what it thinks the words should be. Does anybody know if there is a later version of these dictionaries and if so how to install them?
Do you use any offline dictionary? Someone recommend a dictionary for linux/openSUSE.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI can launch it with gnome-dictionary, but that is not a package in aptitude.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi just got a new internet connection from the local service provider. While installation, he insisted that i use my mobile number as the wpa password for the wifi. From what Ive heard, this is company policy. Im a little skeptical about this as ive read wpa is crackable using a dictionary if the password is in there. So i looked around and found the air-crack suite to test the security for my access point. As my password is only numeric, i couldn't find only a numeric dictionary to use with air-crack.
So, i would like to create a dictionary that has only 10 digits, and the first two digit should be "05", because thats what mobile numbers here start from. I would be really grateful if anyone could point me to a way to do this easily.
When we compare openoffice with ms office, though the auto spell check is enabled openoffice is not recognising the errors. In OpenOffice Presentation it isn't totally and in gedit it is even showing errors though they are right. How can I update the dictionary of these. It must work as efficiently as MS Office ones.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI read books using a PDF reader and I'd like to be able to easily look words up that I don't know. I see that the ipad has an easy to use dictionary built in and that's the type of thing I'm looking for. Perhaps being able to right click a word and select "look up in dictionary".
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got a bit of a problem. I'm looking for a English wordpower dictionary, which is up to date. I am already using Stardict (CZ-EN, CZ-RU, acronyms).
I have tried google, but he didn't show anything specific.
I'm running OpenOffice.Org 3.1.1 out of the Fedora repositories. I'm using the UK locales and settings where possible. I can't seem to get the interface in en-gb, and my dictionary keeps recommending the Americanisation of words to me.
Also finally, is there not a grammar checker in OpenOffice.Org? I'm looking in the Language Settings - > Writing Aids and there isn't anything listed under grammar?
Finally, I might as well ask this in case anyone knows why. In the Writer settings I changed the default fonts to the Liberation font family however OpenOffice keeps attaching the Windows equivalents to the end e.g. 'Liberation Sans; Arial' it's really annoying and I don't know why it's doing this.
The dictionary keeps hanging and then fails with the message Error while looking up definition
Connection failed to the dictionary server at dict.org:2628
I am using Fedora 13, 64 bit version.
Also, firefox can't seem to get into dict.org.
Is there some problem with the site?
Is there some alternate dictionary source I can specify for the application?
I did a previous search before coming here, and I found some alternatives but in very old threads. Though, one of the most mentioned was one called StarDict. What do you think about this one? Is it still good nowadays or are there other alternatives?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm basically wondering if anyone knows where I can find a good dictionary to use with Aircrack-ng or Backtrack 4 with Aircrack or any other program like Aircrack. I am pretty fluent in the Aircrack command line, but cannot seem to find a true dictionary. I would like to not use word lists that don't use all characters, but if anyone has any ideas on creating a word list that actually works I'd love to learn. Also I have heard that some dictionaries are built into Backtrack 4, so I'm wondering if anyone knows how to find those and use them.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have this dictionary file that has this format:
SUBSTITUTE_VALUE, Real Value
SUBSTITUTE_VALUE_2, Real Big Value
SUBSTITUTE_VALUE_HECL, Hardware Abstract
SUBSTITUTE_V, Valley Mem
I want to sort this file so the LONGEST Substitute Values are listed at the top ( so SUBSTITUTE_VALUE_HECL would be first in the list). Obviously I want to keep the related values tagging along with them, so the whole first line would be
SUBSTITUTE_VALUE_HECL, Hardware Abstract
Playing with sort This has me pretty close: sort dict.file -k1.1n,1
How does one remove the Dictionary listed under Applications/Office? It's not obvious - I could not find a way to do it either through the Ubuntu Software Centre or the Synaptic Package Manager route.
