Oct 24, 2010I recently discovered that I could not get gnome-dictionary to perform word look-up on ANY of my Ubuntu systems. I discovered that the problem is not with the app at all, but with the default source; dict.org has stopped functioning as gnome-dictionary expects (and trying to get to the web site just brings up a blank web page; page source is empty). One of the threads I saw in my search provided a different source that is working. It is not as extensive as dict.org's service, but it does work.
Open the Dictionary app, then open the Preferences dialog.
Go to the "Sources" Tab and click on the "Add" button.
In the dialog that opens, change the Description to "Chemnitz Server" (at least this is what I did).
Change the hostname to "dict.tu-chemnitz.de".
I did not mess with the other options.
Once you have done this you can click the "Close" button in that dialog.
In the remaining dialog, you will see a new option for "Chemnitz Server".
Select that, and you will have a working dictionary.
dict.org can soon be returned to its proper functionality.

Sep 1, 2010I have made the choice to go with the LXDE desktop and want to completely remove Gnome and KDE. I know that you can just pick which environment you want at login, but I want to remove Gnome and KDE because they are both quite large and I am trying to optimize my system's drive space and memory.
I have issued the following command to remove KDE, my question is. what packages do I really need? Is this process wiping files and apps that I need? See results below. What command do I use if I want to remove only some of the packages and keep the others?

Oct 20, 2009I want to remove all of my panels, and i simply can't.I've removed the bottom panel, and when i right-click the top panel, the "Delete this panel" option is disabled. I've googled around extensively and can't find a solution that works.

Jul 14, 2010I created a new panel in Gnome (Fedora 12) and it wasn't showing up right. So I just told it to make another (with the same results), and finally one more. So with the two that are there by default, that's 5 total panels... None of the newly created panels where displaying at all. But after creating the last one the system froze up. Now when I try to boot into fedora my system locks up as it's trying to load GNOME...
Is there any way for me to remove those panels through BASH? So I can just boot to a prompt and get them removed. After that I imagine GNOME will load correctly again...

Nov 6, 2009I'm running OpenOffice.Org 3.1.1 out of the Fedora repositories. I'm using the UK locales and settings where possible. I can't seem to get the interface in en-gb, and my dictionary keeps recommending the Americanisation of words to me.
Also finally, is there not a grammar checker in OpenOffice.Org? I'm looking in the Language Settings - > Writing Aids and there isn't anything listed under grammar?
Finally, I might as well ask this in case anyone knows why. In the Writer settings I changed the default fonts to the Liberation font family however OpenOffice keeps attaching the Windows equivalents to the end e.g. 'Liberation Sans; Arial' it's really annoying and I don't know why it's doing this.

Sep 24, 2009When I'm typing something on a site the spell checkers (dictionary or whatever) leaves a lot to be desired. Sometimes I am forced to type the word into google's search engine & having it give me the correct spelling. So, is there a way of making this thing "smarter"?
To clarify, say I type in goverment, the checker isn't smart enough to know that I need the "n" - government - (this is just an example word & is not actually the case with it as I can't think of any right now that is) & gives me a bunch of meaningless, non-related words to choose from.

Mar 28, 2010I know probably not so many people here need a English dictionary on Fedora box. But it's worth to documented since the other guides are Ubuntu specific and not usable on Fedora. Due to the old Flash 9 embedded in the Linux version of ldoce5, various problems happen. I came across the following from F11 to F13:
1. Chunky sound (F11)
2. Hang down the pulseaudio server (F12)
3. Completely silent (F13)
I tried installing the legacy libflashsupport with pulseaudio patch however it was deprecated from F10. The simplest and probably ultimate solution is to install the alsa-oss wrapper to re-direct the sound stream to alsa emulated by pulseaudio.

1) Run an FTP so I (& my mates) can access files anywhere wit ease(no dramas).

Now I have successfully Installed Ubuntu Server (Finally) but then messed up cuz I installed the Gnome GUI and now cant find any place where I can type any sudo commands. vsftpd should work for me right?

Is there a meta-package that I can remove "yum remove" and it will remove all the GUI dependencies, or perhaps something like "yum groupremove"?
