I got this information of creating raw devices and then starting the service service rawdevices start.But there appears to be no service 'rawdevices'. Please can anyone help me with this?Is there anyway I can create an disk /dev/sda7 and then link it as a raw device?
View 5 RepliesI have a Corsair R60 ssd disk which is a disk with both sata and usb connectors. But the usb thing seems to be a bit non-standard, or maybe its just my fedora linux.When I insert the disk using a usb cabel to a running Fedora 14 linux system, a device called /dev/sg3 is added but that is all. No new /dev/sd* device is created so I can't mount the disk.
If I look at
cat /proc/scsi/sg/device_strs

So the disk is there. (The last entry) but my linux will for some reason not see it as a usb hard disk. When I insert other usb disks they work fine. It is only this specific disk which causes problems. I have tried on 3 different computers with the same result.
A hint to the problem may be that if I add the disk to a windows system(With usb) the disk is called "A fixed disk" and not a portable disk as expected. The disk works fine with linux If i connect it with the sata cabel, but I would really like to have it working with usb too. (To mount it on computers without sata).
Added:I did try to mount /dev/sg3 but mount say that its not a block device. (File say Its a character special device).

I found an other guy with exactly the same problem [URL] so I think its beginning to look like a bug in the drives firmware or in the linux kernel.
Final update:Corsair have said that the disk design is broken and there does not seem to be any way to make it work.
I try to configure openvpn under Fedora, using TUN/TAP device. I configured it under windows without the problems. However in windows this device is TAP-WIN32 device with the name VPN-urs. It set set in client.ovpn file as:

I have just bought 4 1TB drives and set up a Software Raid level 5. Using Disk Utility tool I have created a GPT partition table and now when I want to create a partition, I get:

it does say nothing about creating an partition on the /dev/md0, although Gnome Disk Utility allows to do that - if I just run mkfs.xsf /dev/md0 - it works fine, yet Disk Utility tells me that disk has not been partitioned, see image:

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am working on an embedded system, which is an USB MSC device that supports some vendor specific scsi commands. I am using FC10 laptop as USB host for testing, and it runs some small apps based on sg3. All has been well for ~ a week. The FC10 laptop is able to communicate with the device and retrieve data. Suddenly, starting from today, the laptop is not able to properly detect the device. When plugged-in, the MSC device is detected as input device (I thought). This is observed from "dmesg" output and changes in "/dev/input/".The device under development is running at full speed. When I connect to winXP, no problem. A windows file explorer pops up, showing the content of the drive.Also, the FC10 has no problem with other USB flash drive (high speed).

The system told me since a while, that a lot of the sectors of one disk of the (software) RAID compound are failed already. So tried to disconnect each of the disks and start them separately. Unfortunaltly this is not working (for one its is not working at all, the other wents the same far as with both), when I tried to recover the system with the Fedora DVD, it said no distribution found. I am quite new and do not know so much about linux system, so i do not know what further information you could need. Maybe it can be important, that both disks are encryped (the system wents so far, that I can type in the password).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have xp/fc8 on an older ide drive and just installed a new sata 1T and planned to put fc10 on it but in the process I killed my fc8 installation. I told the installer that the other disks were off limits but it was somewhat confusing at the bootloader page. So, I suspect that I told it boot off the fc8 disk. If that is the case is there a way to restore the fc8 install by somehow rescuing the /boot partition on the fc8 disk?

Can I create live disk using my hard drive installation? If yes then, can I restore the fedora from the live disk to the hard drive. I mean to say that from that live disk can I install fedora again in my hard drive.
Second question is, if I create the disk image of my hard drive( including ntfs & FAT32 partition) , can I restore it in a blank drive. If so , then can os will be restored also?
I did a horrible mistake due to lapse in my concentration. Here is the 80 GB IDE disk geometry:
=> C: Windows XP SP2 15 GB partition
=> D: NTFS parition - 10 GB
=> E:F:G:H: NTFS partitions on the Windows Extended partition.
=> On the same Extended partition, there exists Linux /swap and /root partitions.
What happened was:
a) I wanted to delete the H: parition which was residing adjacent to Linux partition
b) By mistake I opened the Explorer and clicked the Mouse on H: partition and left it like that (forgot)
c) I opened Add/Remove program list but did nothing, to do few uninstalls after partition deletion.
d) Now I opened compmgmt.msc for Disk Management then deleted the H: partition!
Then XP reacted strangely and got almost hung
e) Then I switched OFF and ON the PC.
f) Most shocking was GRUB screen vanished (crash console appears) which means that Linux partition got deleted instead of H: partition!!
It's important to share with you that Fedora Core 12 possess the default BOOT flag. I thought that it's nothing big deal, only a case of Boot flag toggle with DOS bootable CD but am shell shocked to find after hitting the fdisk from DOS it says Error reading the disk!!! I felt like collapsed for a while, don't know how I did such a mistake. how to boot into my Windows XP. I can't afford to loose data or bear the expense on Data recovery
I installed ZTE MF 626 modem in my F10 with kernel 2.6.27.12-170, i run usb_modeswitch and so far things happened normally. Watching through /var/log/messages it says that F10 detects two port device for this modem: ttyUSB1 and ttyUSB2, and in the sequence it disable port ttyUSB1 BUT Network Manager still set this port.I mean, when i connect via wvdial appointing to ttyUSB2 i get connection, but Network Manager fails to do it appointing to ttyUSB1. How to change device port in Network Manager?

I get an error message saying that the print queue cannot be started and it asks me to restart CUPS. I tried restarting CUPS and adding the device. It did not work. The printer is on my home network wirelessly. I can add it through the CUPS web interface and print, but then I cannot access the scanner. I tried adding the device after it was already added through CUPS, but that did not work. I would like to use the scanner; I don't really care about the fax.

Trying to create a ks file to install all packages (fedora 12 of course). The file have in it:

which used to work in RHEL, but in here, I get the message on screen: "You have specified that the group 'everything' should be installed. This group does not exist. Would you like to continue or abort". so what's the group name/code to install all packages?

S.M.A.R.T.tells me my primary fedora drive has lots of bad blocks,so I ordered a used identical drive from ebay.I want to do the very basic process of making a full backup of my existing drive - so as to replace it with a more or less identical replacement. Logically identical - not necewsarily sector to sector identical.im not literate in unix and its children - and seem to find a plethora of descriptinos of how to do what I want to do. which is
1. format the drive - what you may call low level format - ie op sys independent.
2. create a partition system compatible with my existing disk.
3. copy everything from my existing disk to the new disk.
4. put existing disk on the shelf as a backup and start to use new disk.
I am on F15 32-bit with GNOME 3. I keep getting "A Hard Disk Is Failing" warnings from the Disk Utility, very frequently. Is this a serious issue? Because I knew this to be a bug in Palimpsest DU back in F13/14. Also how can I disable any notifications from this application?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI created 3 primary paritions using GParted Live CD and kept each one of them for Fedora 12, Fedora 14 and swap respectively. I first installed Fedora 12 to sda1 and Fedora 14 to sda2. Both booted well with no problems. Then I reversed the order. I first installed Fedora 14 to sda1 and Fedora 12 to sda2. The system won't boot Fedora 14. Only Fedora 12 will boot.

Error- completely broken BIOS detected, last attempt with drive = EF. Then I tried again by installing Fedora 14 to MBR and Fedora 12 to sda2, but still the same error as mentioned above. What do you think is the problem here? Grub version 0.97 is there with Fedora 12, I remember. Do you think Grub is causing problems? Despite installing them on two completely different paritions, what could go wrong?

I am completely new to Linux in general, and have recently downloaded Fedora 15 KDE spin. I tried dual-booting between Windows 7 and Fedora by shrinking one of my Windows partitions (I have two, this partition not containing the Windows installation). I tried shrinking it to 30 GB less than the total space available on the partition, and after pressing continue, received an error (which I unfortunately dismissed quickly and can't remember). In the file manager, Fedora showed that my partition changed from 1.3Tb to 1.2 Tb, but I couldn't access it. Upon rebooting into Windows, I still can't access it, receiving a "format drive before use" popup and then error stating that it is possibly of a different filesystem or corrupt.
Unfortunately, I stupidly didn't backup any of my data (which I will be sure to remember to do in the future). I installed EASEUS Partition Master 8.0.1 Home Edition, which states that my drive is still of NTFS filesystem and has the total space it should. However, upon clicking "check drive," it states there are no errors and when trying to "explore files," it doesn't find any (yet it shows the correct amount of used and unused space). I then tried running TestDisk, but only allows me to check my media drive E, which is my dvd drive that has my Fedora Live CD in it (which cannot be ejected manually or through Windows, an error stating it cannot be ejected). I didn't go through with TestDisk for my DVD drive because I needed to verify the type of partition (which to my knowledge shouldn't even exist). It shows 700 something MiB / 600 something MiB. Although I have decent general knowledge about computers, I am a complete novice when it comes to doing something like this.
Is there any C function that will translate UUIDs into device names? I have a little graphical mount tool that can read user-mountable device names from /etc/fstab and lets you cycle through the list and mount or unmount them. But it doesn't work with UUIDs, which are preferred these days. Is there any way around this?
