Fedora :: Copying Core 10 To An External Drive?

Jun 20, 2009

I am thinking about using aida to nuke my drive and then I'll re-partition it with gparted. I don't want to lose my 15 GB installation of Fedora Core 10 in the process and have an external 80 GB drive. How could I back up Fedora to this drive with the intention of copying it back to my internal drive?

Fedora Hardware :: External Drive Permissions - Error While Copying

Aug 7, 2011

I've got two external drives that are using ext4 that for whatever reason, I just can't seem to write too. I've changed the permissions on the drives using chmod so the permissions are "drwxrwxrwx". I can even right click within the drive and click "Create New Folder" but then it tells me, "Error while copying to "sdc1". The destination is read-only." I thought the destination permissions were setup so anyone can read/write to the disk? I haven't been using linux that long and have only recently started to feel comfortable to move over all of my stuff to Fedora.

General :: Copying Files From One External USB Hard Drive To Another?

Jul 30, 2011

I have two USB 2 external hard drives. I want to copy about 30 gigs of data from one to another. What command line command do I use ? I was thinking of using cp with the -R and -n options, but I have no idea what devices to refer to. I can't find any external hard drives in /etc/fstab and I'm not sure what /dev device each USB external hard drive uses. I just want to copy the files and the directories that they are in just as they are. There are no links and I do not want to do a backup.

Fedora :: 13 Copying Data Very Slowly To External HDD?

Jun 23, 2010

I have Western Digital 1 TB external HDD. I had slackware 13 and it could copy data to it with speed around 30 MB/s (copy from machine to HDD) and it was cool. It's usb 2.0 as KInfoCenter says. But now in fedora 13, it's like 1 MB/s or even less (KInfoCenter still says usb 2.0). Any special mount option to set in fuseblk to speed it up? I mean something like blksize or like that?

Code:

/dev/sdc1 on /media/My Book type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096)

Fedora Hardware :: Unsupported Operation While Copying - External HD?

Jul 25, 2011

My USB ntfs external hard drive mounts fine when I plug it in and I can often copy files with no problems. However, I have some large folders on my machine (~10 GB with ~ 200,000 files) which begin to copy to the external drive but then stop with the error "Unsupportes operation while copying <filename>." The file currently being copied when this happens appears to be random. Does anyone know what the issue is and/or how to fix it?

Fedora :: Copying Data From A (western Digital) Usb Drive (ntfs Partition)?

Feb 20, 2009

I'm actually not a Linux newbie, but I'm DEFINITELY no expert either... I'm trying to copy all my data(approx 50 GB) from a usb drive(western digital 250GB) with ntfs partition in one go... The problem is that it only fails for big transfers... works fine for smaller transfers like 1Gigs or less... I have just one internal hdd partitioned into two ext3 partitions.. so I have sda1(Primary.. mount pt /), sda2(swap) and sda3(mount pt /piyush)... The usb drive comes up as sdb(sdb1).. just has one ntfs partition... I've also installed the ntf-3g drivers.... but doesn't seem to work... I've also noticed that when the machine hangs and I try to shut down, it fails and I get a message again again... (sdb1- no sense detected) or something like this... don't remember the exact message... will post the exact one if no one is able to figure out what's wrong...

Ubuntu :: Does 1TB Core External HDD With DES Lock Will Work?

Sep 1, 2011

I want to buy a new external USB hard disk drive, and my eye was drawn by the 1TB CORE External Desktop USB 2.0 Very appealing was the comment "Plug n Play - no software to install". But then I noticed the sentence: "Includes DES lock - Protect all your important files." This set the alarm bells ringing. If the drive comes with a DES protection lock, is this likely to work with Ubuntu? Or is it going to be a Windows-only thing, locking me out cos I don't use Windows?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Reformatting External Drive - Error "drive Doesn't Show Up At All Via Df -k"

Apr 15, 2011

I need to re-format an external drive. All the instructions I have found start with figuring out where the drive is mounted (sda, hda, etc.). However, as soon as my RH Linux machine sees the drive's format (ntfs) it decides it won't even mount it in the first place. Gives me an error message. Also, the drive doesn't show up at all via "df -k". how to convince RHL to be a little more accepting?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading From Core 4 To Core 10?

May 20, 2009

I have created a virtual machine of a system running Fedora Core 4 and I need to upgrade it to Fedora Core 10. Based on what I have read, it iis possible so I started theupgrade process. I get an error message saying that /dev/hda6 (my root paritition does not exist) even though it does.

Does the installer need to read a label from /etc/fstab? I executed tune2fs -L / /dev/hda6 amd ,and added LABEL=/ for the corresponding entry for fstab. but the FEDORA CORE 10 is still giving the same problems for the installation process. Should I upgrade to an intermediate verson like Fedora Core 7 first?

Debian Configuration :: Copying Video Setup From Ubuntu - External Monitor

Oct 15, 2015

My laptop has a dual boot Debian + Ubuntu installation.

In particular I am using Debian 8.0 with stock kernel 3.16.0-4 (or equally 4.1.10 custom compiled, I tested it and it does not make any difference for the subject of this post).

Ubuntu is 14.10, with stock kernel 3.19.0-15.

In both installations I have nvidia nouveau drivers and intel integrated graphics drivers installed and loaded. This is the default for both installations.

In both installations I have xorg automatically configured (no xorg.conf file present in /etc/X11). In both systems the content of /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d is the same for what moitors are concerned (differences in mice and trackpad entries).

Unfortunately, the video configuration in Ubuntu 14.10 works out of the box. In particular I can plug in an external monitor/projector and it will fire-up the nvidia card (nouveau drivers) to power that monitor.

Debian 8.0 on the other hand does not even detect the external monitor.

I don't know where to start to solve the problems.

The hardware is as follows: the laptop (lenovo W530) features both an Intel integrated graphics card and an Nvidia K1000M. The VGA port is connected only to the Nvidia card (this is according to my online research, as I don't know how to check this).

Fedora :: External Drive Seen In Mint But Not 14?

May 15, 2011

I have a computer with an Asus M2N68-AM plus mother board running Fedora 14 that will not show external usb flash drives or hard drives when I plug them in. I used to run Linux Mint 9 on this computer and switched to Fedora because of easier LVM support out of the box. Mint would mount these devices just fine.

To simplify the issue and rule out anything I did since the installation, I tested this on both the Mint 9 live DVD and Fedora 14 live cd (both 32-bit versions, if that makes a difference) with the same results.

Just to be clear, I'm still somewhat new to Linux. I'm reasonably sure it's an issue with seeing the devices in the first place and not just an auto-mounting problem.

Fedora Installation :: How To Install Fedora 11 On External USB Drive With Anti-virus?

Sep 28, 2009

I have a Western Digital Pasport 320 GB hard drive. I wanted to create a live installation on it like a USB stick. I wanted it to serve as a portable OS that I could use to boot any other computer off of, and use it for diagnostics and anti-virus scanning on Windows based computers. The additional space is for my own personal use, kind of like having a mobile desktop where I have all of my documents in one place. What I need to know is how to set up Fedora 11 so that the hard drive will boot on most PCs regardless of their architecture. I also need to know what's a good Anti-virus to install onto it for the sake of fixing Windows hard drives.

Please keep in mind I'm a noob when it comes down to a lot of things, so if there's an antivirus I have to install manually, please included a step by step.

Fedora Installation :: Running Fedora 11 On External Usb Hard Drive

Aug 3, 2009

Background is this: Laptop has an internal h/d (obviously) so I removed it from laptop. Then set Bios to boot from external h/d. Installed Fedora 11 on ext. h/d no swap partition as drive already has 4 partitions. Fedora ran lovely!! I then replaced internal hard drive but left bios to boot from external hard drive. Boot screen for fedora came up, hit enter and fedora started loading. The little balloon started filling up, got to a quarter full and then screen went black. Had to reboot to get going again, same thing happened. Can anybody tell me what may be causing it,i.e. black screen. Fedora boots up and runs lovely with internal h/d removed. Any help very gratefully received. M/c has intel dual core processor, 3 gig of ram.

Fedora :: LVM On External USB Drive - Recovery Console?

Jan 17, 2010

I'm having an issue with LVM on an external USB drive. When booting, the system drops into a recovery console if the external drive is not powered on because it cannot find the volume group and members. The setup is one system drive with fedora 12 installed, one internal data drive; LVM volume group vg1 with 5 partitions and one external backup drive LVM volume group vg2 with 5 partitions. Both the data drive and external backup are the same size and identical layout.

I use an rsync script that I wrote to execute backups (mirroring actually).
fstab is set 'noauto' on the external partitions.
I am new to LVM and I'm stumped as how to make the system 'ignore' the external drive at boot, if not powered on.
