I know it sounds easy but I've googled it and found nothing

I've enabled root under Ubuntu (i know frowned upon), I'd like to change the default behaviour of sudo so that rather than requesting my password (the password I logon with), it requires the root password.
Have searched the forums but can't find the answer.

How can I show the gnome 3 launcher on the left of the screen and maybe hide it (I dont really need the hide option though), the same way the unity launcher does.
The only way I can see it now is by clicking the super button to put the laptop in the activities mode view (shown in the picture) so I can see it. I need to change its behavior. any alternative behavior?

I wanted to know how can I change the name that appears in the upper right corner on the top bar. I set it up in the first install with my dad's name, but now I'm using the laptop so I want it to display my name. I managed to delete his profile and make a new one with my name, but the top bar still displays his name.
I want to change it from Guy (my dad) to Mike (yours truly)
I'm running Ubuntu 9.04.

Every time I invoke gedit from the root terminal I get:-
[AnOther@FSLServer ~]$ su
Password:
[root@FSLServer AnOther]# gedit
(gedit:6447): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
followed by 33 occurrences of:-
GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL]. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)gedit opens fine but it seems really odd. My exposure to linux is not vast but this has never happened before Fedora12 It doesn't happen if I just use the terminal as an ordinary user.It also has nothing to do with the Bad & Ugly Gstreamer plugins as this happened from the moment the system was installed from the DVD and before the plugins were loaded even after removing them and rebooting I still get the ream of GConf errors if I start Gedit after su,

I'm running fedora 10 with enabled desktop effects on an ati card. It seems to have included an effect similar to OS Xs active corners and expose where the top right corner gives me an overview of every window. I have ccsm installed and tried to disable every feature enabled but it doesn't seem to come from there.

Code:
[root@localhost kostia]# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 12)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor PCI Express x16 Root Port (rev 12)
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset HECI Controller (rev 06)
[Code].....
1. It shows root@localhost kostia, but during the installation of Fedora 13 DVD x86 I renamed localhost.localdomain into baikal as my laptop name. Very strange error. On static PC I used amour name and it works without localhost.
2. Above you can see my list of initial cards. I wish to know where is it my ethernet card? The bug #2 is that after Fedora was installed, I can't see any connections in my Network Manager. So I created Wired one myself. After that I still can't see the icon in the top-right corner to restart the connection as usually we may do that. So, what is wrong? How to make my laptop going to the Internet.

I want to get rid of this effect and modified following key in gconf-editor as suggested in [URL]apps/compiz/plugins/scale/allscreens/option, change initiate_edge from TopRight to None. but nothing happens on the effect. The top right corner effect still there

For some reason the mouse curser starts out in the middle of the screen after booting as normal but as soon as i move it, it gets stuck in the top left corner of the screen. It still responds to clicks and i can sometimes see it "wants" to move but itets repositioned into that corner.he problem exists in the live-cd session as well as in the installed session.I looked into the Xorg.0.log file and it said something along the lines of:Code:HID XXXX:XXXX: failed to initialize for relative axesI suspect this to be the culprit, yet i've never had any problems with the mouse in any other operating system (writing from kubuntu 9.10 right now) and i've used most of the popular ones.Is there anything i can do about it? Seems that X is doing things differently in Fedora... There's got to be some switch or something.

1) What is the window effect called that adjusts all open windows into a viewable position while darkening the backgrounds?2) Is there a source or an already made list of packages ready so I can install it on a different operating system? I'm sticking with F14 as my main Desktop Os, however, would like to use this on a Live USB with Archbang Linux.

When I installed fedora 14 when moving mouse to the top right corner I would get all windows arranged one next to another on the desktop so I can choose between them. Now I don't have that feature any more.
Does it conflict with compiz, or is it one of compiz plugins? Which package is responsible for it and how can I get it back?

I finally got around to installing Fedora 15 on my HTPC. I noticed that the mouse cursor starts in the upper left corner of the screen as soon as the login screen appears. This means that after login, if I only used the keyboard so far, the Gnome Shell overlay starts immediately. This is at most an interesting quirk until I try to set XMBC to automatically launch. Now I have to press <Esc> or move the mouse to de-activate the overlay before I can use the program. Is this mouse cursor thing intended behaviour, is there some software fix, or is it a hardware quirk? I have a Radeon HD 4650 graphics card (Smolt profile).

I might get harassed for making this windows/linux comparison, but i'm seriously wondering why i cant find any application that can display a quick little notification on the bottom right hand corner of my screen whenever there's some intrusion attempt.
For example, sometimes I can see that in my /etc/logs/secure (or something like that) there's someone who's trying to attempt to connect to me using random usernames/passwords from different servers. The only time I know this has happened is when i actually open the file with gedit. Is there anything like (norton for windows) that can display little notifications (with or without eye candy)??

I have re-installed Fedora 3 times, each time, after a little while of use, when I am botting it up, it loads up, and before the login screen appears, the screen just goes black, and I end up with just a black screen and a white line in the top left corner flashing, thus resulting in me not being able to log in. The exact same has happened a number of time
Could it be something I had installed? Also, whilst using it, on the third install, a few times a message appeared telling me there was a kernel error, could this be linked to the problem? I was running Fedora in GNOME, but I had KDE installed too.

I just installed the new Fedora 11 and have used earlier versions in the past a few times before. I am trying to figure out if there is anyway to automatically allow root access to everything once an administrator logs in as admin. I am extremely tired of having to type in my password EVERY single time I want to do something. Especially having to use the terminal for something as simple as copying a file from one directory to another.

I'm an inordinate amount of trouble getting F15 to run without NetworkManager. If I boot with the NetworkManager service enabled, my NIC presents as expected at /dev/eth0 (I'm using biosdevname=0). However, when I stop the NetworkManager service, /dev/eth0 disappears from the filesystem. If I boot without NetworkManager enabled, /dev/eth0 is never created. Reviewing dmesg, udev is loading an ethernet driver.

I am not sure if this is a bug or not: I have disabled updates in System/Preferences/Software Update Preferences (set to Never/Nothing/Never) and yet when there are updates I get the icon on the Gnome panel announcing bugs or security updates. The reason I have disabled updates is that I prefer to check for updates manually with Yum, also to prevent lock conflicts between manual Yum and PackageKit.
