Fedora :: Different Behaviour When Invoking Gedit From Root Terminal

Every time I invoke gedit from the root terminal I get:-

followed by 33 occurrences of:-

My exposure to linux is not vast but this has never happened before Fedora12 It doesn't happen if I just use the terminal as an ordinary user.It also has nothing to do with the Bad & Ugly Gstreamer plugins as this happened from the moment the system was installed from the DVD and before the plugins were loaded even after removing them and rebooting I still get the ream of GConf errors if I start Gedit after su,

Everyone is wondering why we can't run gEdit and other tools from a terminal by logging in as root(e.g"su-"), I understand that by making changes they are trying to force us as users of Linux to learn better habits that are more secure, but the issues are driving people nuts!
I for one really like being able to log as root and open gEdit to make drive changes without having to login as root, I would normally still have access to all my things like email etc. So changing Linux to force everyone to not use tools like gEdit as root is becoming more of an inconvenience than they realize, there must be a safe way to do this!

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and I just installed mythtv to turn it into a PVR. However now I have to type my root password everytime I click reboot. I was thinking maybe it was a user group thing but I couldn't find anything.

Just did a fresh install of fedora 14 (laughlin). I want to run gedit as root ... that's my prefered way for creating and adjusting system config files. Now I'm very stuck ... can't even access yum.conf to set keepcache. I get:

I'm trying to use gedit as root to edit some config files, but everytime I try to open it, I get this mess. I had a similar issue with debian, and someone solved it by telling my to run gksu nautilus. I tried to run gksu gedit, but apparently that doesn't work on Fedora. I really like Fedora, and I want to stick with it, but if I can't edit these files, I'm going to have issues.

I get error when trying to open files with gedit from terminal, here the esteps:

1. Open Terminal
2. Show: [tgp@nobocanuser ~]$
3. type: su
4. password: ******
5. Show: [root@nobocanuser tgp]#
6. Type: gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or another file to edit)

i want to install skype and have to do it maually, but when i type gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/skype.repo in terminal i get this error:

when i press Alt+F2 then type "r" it rebuilds the gnome shell but when i do this twice it crashs with "oops something has gone bad" or similar to it. i press Alt+F2 then type "lg" to see what is the problem and in the error tab there is "Error : Error invoking Gio.make_directory_with_parents Cannot create directory : filed already exist".

I searched the menu-bar of gedit, i searched the web, i searched the help of gedit.(try a search on "change background to black for gedit" and similar and you know what i have gone through).If i use the embedded terminal in gedit (the only reason i use gedit at all) its background color is set to white.I barely can read it and it is useless.This is not a gnome-installation. Perhaps i miss a package needed ?

I am trying to use the gedit command to edit my smb.conf file. It was originally working and all of a sudden it has stopped working. I have typed.. 'gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf' but it is a no go. I used the chmod command to set permissions as.. 'chmod 744 smb.conf' However I am still unable to get the file to open. If I do the 'more smb.conf' command I am able to read the contents of the file, however I am unable to edit them.

I am having an error during my Oracle 11g R2 installation on Fedora 13 that I couldn't get rid of or fix it, and I just continued the installation by clicking on the continue button to skip this error. The error message on the alert window is:

how to get a shortcut for opening a terminal as root? I mean something I could put in my gnome panel and then just click and get a dialog asking for the root password. Or maybe just open the terminal and automatically do "su -" (maybe this is easier actually). In Debian/Ubuntu this can be achieved doing "gksu gnome-terminal". In F10 I got it done using beesu, but it doesn't work anymore in F11:

When I upgraded to the latest Wicd, it wouldn't load automatically in the startup as it did before.
So I removed the startup entry and am currently having to enter the following commands to get Wicd loaded and get online.

I'm running 2.6.35.14-95.fc14.i686 on Gnome 2.32.0. I've been trying to assign a keyboard shortcut to Suspend the system when activated, but it doesn't work because to suspend the system you need to be root. The command I've been using for the shortcut is terminal "pm-suspend".I don't wanna set up the working user as root. Is there any way to get around the root authentication while suspend to make the shortcut work?
