Fedora :: Change Desktop Mode In 15
Jun 15, 2011
The first time I started F15 the following notice appeared (approx.: I have translated it from spanish):
Quote:
Unfortunately GNOME 3 failed on having started and it is now in alternative mode. It probably signifies that your system (graphic hardware or controller) is not capable of executing GNOME 3 complete.
Computer data: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2,01GHz; 1.5 GB RAM; ATI Radeon 9200SE. Fedora 15.
How can I change from "alternative mode " to another more friendly not 3D desktop?

FC9 - Sulphur, x86, nothing fancy
Did an update (damn the unofficial repos!)
Found a problem with pam_passwdqc module.
Like the title says, I'm unable to change root's password.
I boot into singleuser mode, run passwd, get the
Code:
Boot into multiuser mode and I'm still unable to login.
Two questions:
1) Anyone have a 'default' /etc/pam.d/system-auth that I can replace with the system-auth that was obliterated by the pam_passwdqc update?
2) Any other ideas?

How can I change the window focus mode in compiz in F14? I prefer point focus rather than click focus, but the 'system -> preferences -> windows' cannot run in compiz environment.
Also, can I save the position of the terminal in compiz? I don't want to adjust the terminal positions manually after each logging in.

I compiled a code on a Linux cluster machine with mpich and ifort. A test run shows that the program works fine. However, it seems that the program is running in serial instead of parallel mode: reducing the number of CPU's from 32 to 3 does not increase the time it takes to run the simulation. Infact, the simulation is slightly faster with 3 compared to 32 CPU's. Unfortunately I have very little experience on the subject.
My questions are:
(1) How can I be 100% sure my code is running in parallel and not in serial mode?
(2) If the code is running serial, what do I need to do to make it run in parallel mode?
Details:
For submission I use a jobscript which includes the following lines:
Red Hat 4.1.2-46

The mouse was working fine until I pressed the 'lock' button right above it. Since then I have not been able to move the mouse 'once' I get logged in. The mouse works fine when in the login screen. I have tried resetting several times. The keyboard seems to be working, but I don't know where to go to fix the mouse, and I don't know many keyboard shortcuts
** Solved **It's been filed as a bug and has yet to be fixed:[URl]A code below was used effectively by many but made my system freeze when I started up. I ended up reinstalling. So just a general warning.
Code:

I'm trying to change the desktop to KDE so that it's persistent across boots. I did the usual thing of adding /etc/sysconfig/desktop and adding the appropriate parameters, but for whatever reason, whenever I reboot, it still loads Gnome. Now here's where it gets annoying: I can switch to runlevel 3, type startx, and then it will read /etc/sysconfig/desktop and load KDE properly. I've been banging my head against a wall over this one. Where is the call made to start gdm? I think I'll probably wind up changing the default runlevel to 3, but I'm still curious as to why those scripts are not executed on boot.

admit I don't know everything and right now I am at my wit's end trying to figure out this one.The system is: F13 x86_64; GNOME (compiz turned off); wine-1.1.38-1.fc13.i686 and nvidia er from RPM Fusion xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-195.36.24-1.fc13.x86_64The problem is: When I run a fullscreen app in Wine, switch virtual desktops and switch back, the fullscreen app has shrunk. This did not occur on F12 prior to upgrading to F13.The app itself seems to have not noticed it was resized; on checking its configuration panel it seems to still think it's running full screen. What I want to know is whether the problem is in Wine, the video driver, or the window manager, or somewhere else, so that I can report it to the right people (or just fix it).

After installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

I have a dual boot (WinXp, Ubuntu) on my machine. Unbuntu is installed in the same partition of WinXp. Evertime i have to access a windows file or folder i mount the windows drive using the following command
Code:
sudo mount -t ntfs -o nls=utf8,umask=0222 /dev/sda1 /media/c
This works just fine. My problem is that all the files are loaded with -rwxrwxrwx and the directories drwxrwxrwx. I cannot change the file mode bits using chmod even in su mode. chmod incidentally works just fine and does not give any error. But the file mode bits are still the same.

I know I have seen/read this someplace before but I cannot find it.
Just installed ver 10.4 -64 bit desktop, I want to make some modifications to the environment -- want to boot in terminal mode and not desktop (for fun and giggles), but if I open up a terminal, enter su- and password, then edit the (I hope) appropriate file it comes back and says that I do not have permission.
Is it because I installed the desktop version, or because I don't know enough linux to shoot myself in the foot yet? Should I go back to square one and install the server version then configure it so that it starts up the desktop?

But when I started using battery I noticed that internet connection is very slow(around 1-4 KB/s, normally ~128KB/s).I used Code:iwpriv eth1 set_pm 0(pm = power mode? And what means this parameter 0, 1 and 2?)and everything seems to be ok now.And my question is - where can I edit which power mode settings for wifi are used on battery?
