Debian :: Change Preferences By Direct Text Edit

Oct 22, 2015

How to change:

(1) My preferred File Management program, the one that kicks off when I use Places? and

(2) The amount of time before the display is put to sleep?

I DO NOT WANT TO USE A GUI FRONT END to do this. The reason is (1) my preferred File Manager, Xfe, is not listed as one of the options by Preferred Applications. And (2) Power Management Preferences allows 10 or 30 minutes before putting the display to sleep but I want 20 minutes. I need to know what files contain these configurations so I can edit them directly.

Debian Multimedia :: How To Change Simple Scan Preferences In Gnome Jessie

Aug 12, 2015

I had a hard time finding out how to change -- get to-- the simple scan preferences. There is no batten on the screen to open preferences window. I found two way to change the preferences on simple scan.

1. Easy way:
I found that when you run a program in gnome an icon of that application appears on top bar. If you click on that icon a window will appear and one of the items on that window is preferences, by clicking on that you could open preferences window, and change your preferences.

2. Hard way:
Go to applications and open dconf Editor
then go to org section click on it
then go to gnome section click on it
then go to Simple-Scan click on it
now you can change things

Ubuntu :: Click The Edit Button Next To 'Locations' The Clock Preferences Will Pop-up?

Aug 29, 2010

1. Where do I post reports of minor bugs?2. I think I found a minor bug...When you first install Ubuntu and log in. If you of the applet thing on the top bar and click the edit button next to 'Locations' the clock preferences will pop-up.Now if you click on the general tab you will see by default that the clock applet thing should show you the time, temperature and weather...Yet if you look and the applet there is no notification of the of the temperature and weather.I tried to see if un-checking them and closing then opening them up again and re-checking would work but that has no effect.I think this is a minor bug in ubuntu and/or gnome and I would like and update and/or for Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat to correct this.

I would then like to have the results from Cron be dumped into a small text file so I can read it later to view any issues.Right now my job is as follows:Code:01 18 * * * /usr/bin/shellscript.shAbove you see my script I want to run every day @ 6:01 pm. My question is what would the cron line look like if I wanted the results dumped into a random text file somewhere on my system?

Ubuntu :: More Direct Text Editor Replacement For Gedit

Jul 23, 2011

I use a text editor mostly for opening up and editing ascii text files that are used by the programs I write. For example, manually editing comma separated value data files.

I've been using Gedit for this, and it's been very frustrating because I started noticing new-line characters (hex 0A) were creeping into my CSV ascii data. It turns out that Gedit has an undocumented "feature" where it silently introduces a new line character at the end of any file you edit, and there is no way to turn this feature off! See this bug report. I installed GVim, and a quick test shows that GVim does the same thing.

I would like a recommendation for a more straightforward text editor, which:

1) Doesn't add extra bytes to the file (or if it does, this behavior can be turned off).
2) Allows you to force ASCII when opening a file (sometimes Gedit will make an incorrect assumption about encoding because of a stray non-printable character)

More advanced features would be nice, like regular expressions for search and replace, but I need this basic functionality first.

Ubuntu One :: Preferences Freezes - Online Account Login System Forced To Change My Password

May 2, 2010

Yesterday Ubuntu One stopped syncing properly: all files and folders were listed on the web site grayed out and tagged with "uploading", while there was "0 bytes Used". I could still upload files manually to the website fairly quickly, so it probably wasn't purely server overload. Anyway, a number of things happened after that:uninstalled the Ubuntu One client packages and reinstalled them in Account settings on the website, I removed my computer, hoping to make a fresh start the Ubuntu online account login system for some reason forced me to change my password (presumably it wasn't strong enough)

After all that, I can still login to the website (with the new password), but the computer can't login. When I type u1sdtool -s in terminal, the result is

Code:

When I open Ubuntu One Preferences from the Me menu, it completely freezes at the Account tab; I can't click anything or even close it (have to kill it in terminal).

I suppose the login failure has to do with the old password whcih was saved in the keyring. The removed computer from the account probably complicates the issue.

Debian :: Direct PC-PC Ethernet Connection?

Aug 19, 2011

So I have been struggling to make this happen for a bit and cannot figure it out. I want to communicate directly from my non-GUI Debian to my Puppy Linux PC. I have set up my Puppy PC for direct connection as per the instructions in the network wizard. I need to set up my Debian to do the same.

I have done the

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.100
netmask 255.255.255.0

in /etc/network/interfaces.

I still cannot ping the Debian machine from the Puppy one. Are there any other steps to the direct connection? (I already have the crossover cable in place)

I have also tried this with both PCs connected to a Netgear router. I CAN connect to the debian machine if it is on the router at the IP I assigned it and the Puppy PC is configured to use the router.

Is there a file I can edit or a process I can turn off? I think it's close I am just not sure what I am missing.

Programming :: Sed Regular Expression - Write Script To Edit Text Files?

Jun 29, 2010

I am trying to write a script to edit text files formatted like this:

Code:
(MCAL@Contig766:0.30207,CGIG@CVIR_Contig1014:0.13977,(HASI@HDIS_Contig573:0.16828,(CAPI@LCIN_5594371:0.36581,CFOR@FQH745302RIQ7Y:1.91244)0.160:0.00019)0.939:0.15648);
There are never line breaks or spaces in the actual files.

I want to delete all instances of the character "@" and everything between it and the next "," (including that comma) or the next ")" (including that close parentheses) whichever comes first. My desired output file would be like this:

Code:
(MCAL,CGIG,(HASI,(CAPI,CFOR)0.160:0.00019)0.939:0.15648);
I figured out how to do this using sed for either "," or ")" but both looking for whichever comes first.

Debian Configuration :: HP MSA2040 Direct Attach SAS

Jun 24, 2015

I have recently acquired a HP MSA 2040 san, which they say will work with Red Hat. But I'd much rather use Debian. It's attached to a Gen 9 DL360. I cannot get the OS to see the external drives. I hope it's just me mssing something.

I have told the DL360 to keep the external control in HBA mode, not RAID, not using the hosts RAID intelligence. I think I have set the MSA to offer a couple of disks as a virtual drive. I CAN see the drives in the BIOS boot menu for the DL360, though it doesn't show the virtual voilumes on the MSA, I cannot see the MSA virtual or physical drives once Debian is installed.

I have installed multipath-tools, and the SCSCi utilities.

But no luck seeing the drives.

General :: Disk Based Text Editor To Edit File Larger Than Memory?

Aug 2, 2010

I am using Ubuntu and looking for a good editor to edit a file that is > 4GB. I just need to put content at the end and beginning of the file. I suppose I could use something like

cat "text to add" >> huge_file

To append to the file. Is that the route to go? What about prepending? In general, what is the best route if I wanted to edit somewhere in the middle?

I've tried VIM and it fails miserably. I assume emacs and nano would be even worse. What else is there? I assume to accomplish what I am looking for, the editor would have to be specifically designed for this by not keeping the entirety of the file's contents in memory.

So I have a GoFlex NAS driver, which according the specs has a theoretical maximum performance of 100 MB [URL] .....

I mounted it with cifs:
