Fedora :: Yum Dependency Checking Broken By Security Update?

The problem is that yum is refusing to install gcc on a new SL6 install. As far as I can make out, a security update that I applied prior to my attempt to install gcc has caused problems. I did a new SL6 install (x86_86) a couple of weeks ago. This was a minimal installation, and I didn't install any dev tools, as I intended to install them later from yum. Since then, I've done very little; I installed a few packages (samba, xemacs, etc), and I let the system update itself. The update installed 'kernel', and updated 'kernel-firmware' [URL]. I now need to install the dev tools (g++, and so on), but I can't. I've tried this from gpk-application, and directly from yum. The complete yum output is below, but the basic error is:

On my opensuse 11.2 pc, the Decmber 3rd KDE 4.5.4 update proceeded to install all updates except libkdecore4 (and maybe others). libkdecore4 now has a dependency on liblzma5 which is not available. The result is an all white desktop with boxes where the widgets should be.

But I can't find liblzma5 in the repository that is listed in the 2nd posting.

i'm running debian lenny - latest stable i have recently installed smartcam (mobile phone as webcam over bluetooth) from .deb package , get errors of unmet dependency , but application works like a charm, unfortunately broken dependences block my aptitude , i cant fix them either as latest stable use older versions of dependences even in backports... how do i mark smartcam package as not broken and release my apt?

I recently upgraded to Fedora 14 from F13 using Yum, it worked to my amazement except now yum appears to be broken because of a massive amount of dependency issues. It appears the old F13 packages are still around and yum is unable to get ride of them because their dependency with F14 packages of the same name. I tried yum distro-sync, and I tried yum resolvedep $(package-cleanup --orphans) --skip-broken but to no avail. Package--cleanup--orphans identifies all of the left over F13 packages.
I also can't install or upgrade anything using Yum, does give me a reason except the massive amount of dependency issues with the left over F13 packages. When I use the graphical software update it tells me among other things that Yum and RPM have updates but of course it won't update. I did follow the instructions and used yum update yum before I upgraded to F14, maybe it didn't take? Anyway to resolve this issue other than a clean install?

Is there a way to find if a package is a dependency of some other package/s that you have installed it.
For instance, let's say there is a library called libkolabxml1
Now if I just install it and ask :-

Unable to find a reason to install libkolabxml1.
But I remember it being useful/needed somewhere.

I'm not necessarily gonna do this, but I have to know. Is there a way to make the system not complain about every single freaking password you try to use? Make it so that any regular user could make "hello" their password without complaint? Like I said, I won't necessarily do it, but I have to know if it can be done.I did some searching and found the su -c "passwd username" trick, which is working for right now (I have root access but a user account I made for a friend doesn't)... it's just irritating when it won't even let him use something like "snuh123" because it seems to think it's based on a (reversed) dictionary word. I am running Fedora 12 64-bit on a MacBookPro5,1 system. After two weeks of not running Fedora on the system, I boot into it and check for updates with Yum Extender. It only finds a small handful of updates despite the fact that my other system running Fedora 12 32-bit has installed several update over the past two weeks. I cannot update perl due to a missing dependency.
Installed perl:
[kbs1@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep perl-5

perl-5.10.1-112.fc13.x86_64

downgrade also does not work. I just updated F12 to F13 using DVD and this occured. Also prevents me from doing "full" yum system update, these packages always fail. I do not understand the problem, it says that perl-libs 5.10.1-112 requires perl-libs 5.10.1-112, but I have that installed.

I am not having a lot of good fortune with Xfce, this time. The LiveCD had a kernal error, and after doing an install, the update chokes on dependency errors. I tried unchecking the problem update files, but then I ended up in a loop that I couldn't find what else was causing these problems. This doesn't seem to be a big problem listed in this forum, so how do I resolve this?

But it is needed by thunderbird update in the course of "yum update". yum exits with RC 1.Is "--skip-broken" the right way to exclude the thunderbird update ("Resolve depsolve problems by removing packages that are causing problems from the transaction")? I found a behavior of iptables on FC12 to be different and suspect it's broken somehow. Here is what I did
# iptables -F
# iptables -A INPUT -s 127.0.0.1 -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
I don't have a shell on FC12 with me to show the output of iptables -L -n but it looks good after above 2 commands. However, after issuing the following third command iptables -L -n gives "wrong" result
# iptables -R INPUT 1 -s 127.0.0.1 -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
Namely iptables -L -n gives extra "/0" after 127.0.0.1 in the output I have checked on Ubuntu 9.10 and centos 5.4 and they don't give extra "/0"; iptables is not supposed to do that. Of course, I didn't invent these examples but they are abstracted from actual real life scenerio of trying to build rules on our servers.

I have recently upgraded from FC12 to FC13, and last week I updated all packages using YUM. The system is running as a VM inside CentOS 5.5 using KVM. SELinux is enforcing, using the targeted policy. Bugzilla is version 3.6.1 and was NOT installed using RPM or YUM.
Bugzilla was working OK on this machine until SELinux was upgraded last week from 3.7.19-28 to 3.7.19-33, and is still broken after testing 3.7.19-37 from the testing repo. With SELinux in enforcing mode, apache returns error 500 when I browse to the main bugzilla page. The apache error log shows this:-
