Sep 7, 2009When I log in to linx and connect to my University's public wifi, it disconnects or if it stays connected, I cannot ping anything or load any webpages. But when loggod in to windows I can write this message now. Signal strength is 28% Can anything be done to still use wifi in linux and not have to log in to windows?

May 12, 2010Before going too far it may be simplest to answer the question "Does Live USB Creator create a working system for Windows 7?" If not then don't bother reading further. I have installed Live USB Creator on a 32-bit Windows 7 computer but when I run it I can't for the life of me get it to recognize any type of drive. I've read and tried the instructions of using the command line with the --force [drive]: but that has no effect Maybe I am misunderstanding this whole program. From what I read about it, this program will create a working Windows system, place it on a USB stick and then run Windows on a different computer. In my application I would like to run it on my work computer which has Windows XP. If this application should work then will I have complete access to all my computer drives and files and the network/internet? I imagine I would need to install all necessary programs so that I could use them in Windows 7 and would I need to install those programs on the USB stick or could they be on a local hard drive?

May 18, 2011I have a DSL connection attached to a wireless router at home which at the moment working fine on my windows laptop. However I have problems connecting to the internet via my desktop which has fedora on it and TP-Link PCI Wireless card. The connection with the wireless network keeps restarting, disconnecting and reconnecting and when it is connected either no internet or very slow sluggish internet barely loading the webpage title.
I installed Ubuntu and the same problem is happening.Yesterday However everything was working fine even on the desktop.
When I first installed Fedora about 4 days ago I had the same problem but when i restarted the computer everything worked fine. Restarting the machine does not seem to solve the problem now.Please help me diagnose the problem here as it's really hard for me to extend a cable from my desktop to my router. And I need to internet on my Desktop.
OpenSUSE Network :: Windows 7 And Windows LiveID Sign-In Assistant Working With SAMBA?
Dec 10, 2010I have 3 computers. One running openSuse 11.3 with SAMBA and the other 2 are Windows 7 Professional boxes. I have the same user name and passwords for all three boxes.
From the Linux box I can access one of the Windows 7 boxes but the other won't accept my user name and password. The one that won't accept has Windows LiveID Sign-In Assistant installed. Apparantly that's an automatic install now.
I've read that there is a bug with the SAMBA libsmbclient [URL].
I tried updating via YAST but still end up with version 3.5.4-5.1.2 and this doesn't work.
Ubuntu :: Windows Preview Working Only For Open Windows?
Sep 18, 2010I enabled the windows preview effect from CCSM but it seems to be working only for the open windows. For the windows that I have minimized, no preview is shown when I hover over them in taskbar
Is this an expected behaviour ?? Can I change it to be shown for all sorts of windows irrespective of open/closed states ??

Jul 17, 2009I have a strange problem for internet. My clients (winxp - S2) can't get internet.Let me explain my scenerios. Fedora 10 with lan (eth0) having direct internet from dsl model, client (XP service pack 2) can use samba shares using dhcp (wlan0) installed in Fedora 10 box. client can ping my linux box.Now problem is: client (dosbox) can ping the google ip address (i.e ping 74.125.39.106) but can't use 'ping www.google.com'. That means ping with ip works for internet from my client. My linux box can. I can use internet from FC10 but can't use iexplorer from my client to have internet. I have enable ipmasquarding in Firewall and dhcpd is running on wlan0 for dynamic ip address of my clients.Can someone suggest me what kind of problem having I? What should i do to success iexplorer for internet? what possibly am i missing?

Feb 27, 2011I have a simple home network consisting of 2 laptops - one is a linux box and the other runs windows and linux with a dual boot setup. I have tight vnc server running on both machines so that I can look inside one machine from another. I can successfully use the Remote desktop viewer (Ubuntu) to access the linux OS of the other machine. However I cannot access the same machine when it booted into windows the windows OS does not seem accessible at all using tight vnc FROM a linux box.

Mar 30, 2011I can't use cd-rw's or dvd-rw's that was previously burned in Windows. I have a lot of them that I still have from my Windows days and want to re-use them. But my Ubuntu can't delete the rw's so that I can use them again. I tried both Brasero and K3b. Both I just get "erase failed". It happens on both my desktop pc and my laptop. Is there a way or and app that will be able to erase these rw's that I can re-use them with Ubuntu ?

Jul 2, 2011i am having some issues with dual booting my SL6.1 and Windows. The situation is that i recently acquired an old hard drive from a non-working computer of mine with Windows already installed (i know the windows is functional, as i tested it on my new PC with SL6.1 currently installed & everything runs fine)
The problem is that after editing the grub.config to include windows, windows will no longer boot after an attempt to install a legit version of McAffee anti-virus software which coincidently was only after the first attempt at running both OS's in a dual-boot fashion. Except past the windows start up screen before the dreaded blue-screen.
Which is weird because SL6.1 OS will still boot & works perfectly fine like always, so it doesn't really make sense.
My current setup is:
Disk 1: Solid-State:
Boot Partition
SL6 LVM1: Root Partition
Disk 2: Hard Drive:
SL6 LVM2: User, Temp & Swap Space Partitions (Different LVM to Root)
Disk 3: Hard Drive:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
My guess is its windows MBR. The reason i say this is because the Hard Drive contents of the Windows software still appears intact when accessing the drive from the Linux OS. I don't won't to go through the rigmarole of re-installing both OS's. So hopefully their is a relatively simple solution.

May 2, 2010I was using before in dual-boot both Win7 and Ubuntu9.10. I've upgraded yesterday Ubuntu to v. 10.04 and since then a strange thing happened. My (wired) network works fine under Ubuntu. Internet connection is all right, download speeds seem normal,etc. I booted back into Win, and it informed me that my cable is not plugged in. Very weird, because in Ubuntu I had no problems. I disabled the device, rebooted, Windows re-installed the driver for me, but still, the same problem. As I was planning to do it, I even re-installed Win, but STILL, the same problem.
So now, I'm in the strange situation that I have internet connection under Ubuntu and a "please plug in your cable" message under Windows.

May 1, 2011I have recently upgraded to 11.04 and everything works except for compiz and emerald, every time I enable compiz to be the window manager the borders either do not work or they do not appear. I switched the window manager to metacity and now the borders work but I can not get any effects at all. Also emerald never replaced the window borders either.

May 9, 2011I somehow managed to screw up my 'switch between windows shortcut' when changing the settings for compiz. Now I cannot get it to work at all, despite trying to solutions on this and other forums. I removed compiz with the software center and my alt-tab shortcut still didn't work--although it IS enabled and set correctly in the System Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts menu. I reset the alt-tab combo so something else (alt-space, which works for its normal setting of bringing down the window's dropdown menu) but it still did not work to switch between windows.

Apr 8, 2011I have Nagios working and the check_logfiles plugin installed on my Ubuntu box and NSClient ++ installed on my windows box. My end goal is to be able to get the check_logfiles plugin to flag certain words in Windows Log Files. I can call the check_logfiles from the Ubuntu command line and it works fine when I look at a local log file on the Nagios box. If I try to do something similar but point to a remote windows file the process fails. I have NRPE enabled and I think working on the Windows machine. Before I post Config files etc can someone tell me if my approach is correct? Should I be calling the check_logfiles plugin from the Nagios box or do I need to install the Windows version of Check_logfiles on the remote machine and then make some sort of reference to it in the NSC.ini file on the Windows box.

Jan 23, 2010I am trying Linux with the mint cd rom install. I have two hard drives and bootit ng on hdo, with windows xp. I installed mint the first time on hd1 using the install cd. When I booted up I could run the linux but not the windows. I reinstalled bootit ng but had not luck. I reinstalled Linux again and this time tried to get it to install grub on a certain partition but still no luck. I reinstalled it again and this time disconnected hd0 and it worked again and I could run the linux with no problem. But when I connect hd0 I can boot windows but not linux. Bootit sees the other hard drive and can see all the partitions on it but every time I try to boot it just says the partition is not bootable.
I have fiddled with various settings and tried setting the embr and hard drive swap but nothing works. Bootit web site had some help pages that said to run grub from a bootable cd and then type grub> find /boot/grub/stage1. I have tried this but always get error code 15 file not found. grub> find /grub/stage1 same thing I install mint using the following partitions. /boot is about 300 megs. / is about 3 gigs and /home is 8 gigs and /swap is 1 gig. I feel that if some knew bootit ng then they could tell me what to do in five minutes. The hard drive is there and recognized and the partitions are there the system works but I just can not boot to it with out disconnecting the one hard drive

Server :: Samba Credentials Not Working Through Windows 7?
May 2, 2011I have installed a Samba Server (Ubuntu 10.10 Server) detailed config below. The server is up and running but clients running windows 7 cannot connect as their credentials are not accepted. The pop window for credentials keep coming back up on the clients and no connection is issued. I have tried to change the policies on windows 7 as such:
Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Send LM & NTLM responses
Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption
But to no avail. I am in doubt as far as where the issue is coming from. Meaning is it coming from my Samba conf or something in Windows I am not doing right.

Slackware :: 3D Windows Compiz Plugin Isn't Working
Jan 1, 2011I've just finished installing slack on my new computer, and after about 20 minutes of hair-pulling agony, I've gotten compiz working properly except for one plugin; the 3D windows plugin (windows hover over cube on rotate). I think it might be a corrupted ccsm- whenever I check the box next to the plugin, then try to rotate the cube, it is unchecked. Anyway, I know my graphics card (Geforce 6200 256Mb pci-e) is powerful enough to handle it since the driver installed properly and the effect worked on the knoppix live disk I used for partitioning. I'm running xfce and using emerald as the window decorator if it helps at all. It does the same thing with both animation packs.
