Ubuntu :: Network Not Working In Windows After Installing 10.04?
May 2, 2010
I was using before in dual-boot both Win7 and Ubuntu9.10. I've upgraded yesterday Ubuntu to v. 10.04 and since then a strange thing happened. My (wired) network works fine under Ubuntu. Internet connection is all right, download speeds seem normal, etc. I booted back into Win, and it informed me that my cable is not plugged in. Very weird, because in Ubuntu I had no problems. I disabled the device, rebooted, Windows re-installed the driver for me, but still, the same problem. As I was planning to do it, I even re-installed Win, but STILL, the same problem.
So now, I'm in the strange situation that I have internet connection under Ubuntu and a "please plug in your cable" message under Windows.

I have 3 computers. One running openSuse 11.3 with SAMBA and the other 2 are Windows 7 Professional boxes. I have the same user name and passwords for all three boxes.
From the Linux box I can access one of the Windows 7 boxes but the other won't accept my user name and password. The one that won't accept has Windows LiveID Sign-In Assistant installed. Apparantly that's an automatic install now.
I've read that there is a bug with the SAMBA libsmbclient [URL].
I tried updating via YAST but still end up with version 3.5.4-5.1.2 and this doesn't work.

I used to have my print server with cups in openSUSE 11.1 and it used to work perfect. I was able to print from both linux machines and windows. But since I Installed openSUSE 11.2, I'm only able to print from linux machines. In windows XP I'am able to find the printer and install the drivers, and everything seems to work, but when I send the print command, it creates an error. I have three XP pcs that were running perfectly, and now neither one of them print, so I know is a problem with the server itself. I have all the samba and cups services activated, and the firewall is set correctly, but can't figure out why it is working with linux machines and not with windows.

Total Newb here, sorry. I am pseudo-IT at work and have set up a desktop with Debian 5 (accidentally overwrote Windows in the process, but there you go). We are set up with network printers here (all Windows), and I was wondering how to go about being able to print to one of the network printers from my Linux desktop. Can I even connect to the Windows network with this desktop (it is hooked up)? Understand, I do NOT want to screw up anything on the network - they won't let me play anymore if I do. If I download the Linux driver, what do I do next?

I had an Ubuntu Server 32 bit installation and everything was working fine. Now that I installed Ubuntu Server 64bit on a new drive in the same machine, the ethernet card is not working!! This is insane cause when I put the hard disk with the 32bit installation back and booting from it, the ethernet card is working without any problems but in the 64bits installation it is not shown at all using "ifconfig -a"
lspci output:
Quote:
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications AR8151 v1.0 Gigabit Ethernet (rev c0)
How can I check which module is being loaded in the 32bits installation to try to load it manually in the 64 bits installation?

I have a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 network card on my server at work.Everything works fine for a few weeks, then randomly the network connection on the server will stop working. After it stops working, I will try to reconnect with the network manager, it shows a wired connection available, it shows the "connection in progress"animation, then the "connection disabled" icon.
I uninstalled the network manager and used manual configuration, but do you think the network manager was the issue? I can't have the server disconnecting randomly every few weeks with no way to know what the real problem is. Was there an issue with the network manager with 10.04?

I enabled the windows preview effect from CCSM but it seems to be working only for the open windows. For the windows that I have minimized, no preview is shown when I hover over them in taskbar
Is this an expected behaviour ?? Can I change it to be shown for all sorts of windows irrespective of open/closed states ??

OK so I set up a server yesterday and got ndiswrapper loaded on it with the appropriate driver, I edited the /etc/network/interfaces file to contact my router with it's MAC address, WEP Key, etc... So the problem is I can ping addresses like Google and Ubuntu Forums but I can't use apt-get to install or update packages. When I try sudo apt-get update I get a whole bunch of Code: W: Failed to fetch <address>Temporary Failure resolving <address>My Wireless interface is wlan0 and also I can ping my server from my other computer running Linux and my server can ping that computer too.

I'm new to SuSe and lateley I was trying to establish a Network, when some weired problems occured. I was able to establish the network and i have connection to the internet. The suse-machine is rechable by ping from all the other computers in the network. If I'm tryiing to ping the other computers from the suse-machine, nothing happens. The router responds without packet loss, but every other ping occurs in:
From 192.168.2.6: icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.2.6: icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.2.6: icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable

I've been searching for some ideas to solve this problem but couldn't find any.

I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.

It was said that Win 7's Virtual PC is not suitable for installing Ubuntu 10.04 Is there any method at all that it will work? The following is the scenario I ran into: The first time Ubuntu 10.04 installation CD-R boots up, it asked for the Language, and "Install Ubuntu" and then the screen has vertical green bars and then the VPC just closed. The 2nd or 3rd time it booted up, there is no asking of Language or "Install Ubuntu" and just shut down the VPC, sometimes with vertical green bars. I even created another new hard drive and same thing happened. And created VPC 02, and same thing happened. Created VPC 03 with a fixed hard drive size of 60GB and same thing happened.

I've asked this in another forum, but I'm not sure I phrased it very well. I have a desktop and a "server" at the house. The "server" is sitting across the room, with no keyboard or mouse. If I were to boot the server from a LiveCD, could I then get in with SSH and kick off the setup remotely? I'm getting "Connection refused" when trying to ssh in, so I'm guessing that the service is probably not turned on.
I checked into Reconstructor, and I think that may be the way to go, if I can figure out what I need to do. I'm thinking all I need to do is install an SSH key and start the service, then I can get into it from my desktop and proceed with the install.
Is this possible to do? Or is there a better way? I know I could lug the keyboard, mouse and monitor over to the other machine to do it, but that would mean that I couldn't do anything on my desktop (since that's where the keyboard, etc. would come from).

On my desktop having a NIC 3Com, connected to the company intranet and correctly working, I have added a second NIC ( Realtek RTL-8139) to connect a second small network ( three devices, instrumentation) using static addressing. The new board seems to be rekognized by Ubuntu, indicating "auto eth1" in the Network connections dialog. When I try to configure the connection, the "Apply" button is always disabled, therefore I cannot activate it. The command lspci shows that the board has been recognized but when i sent the
lshw -c network
the response is:

Windows XP Pro, VMware and Kubuntu as the guest. Tried several different ways of adding LAMP server, via the Konsole and also via Synatpic and although I can get into localhost and it says "it works" doesn't actually take me to a list which includes the links to Apache and phpmyadmin like some tuts show. Also if I make the php test page that also works, but I cannot get phpmyadmin to work. When I look in the var/www folder there are only 3 files there and not the apache2 and phpmyadmin folders as shown on a lullabot tutorial.

I have installed Ubuntu onto a old Dell Dimension 2400, with a Intel Celeron and i845GV chip. I am trying to install Processing and it says:
"If you set up a launcher (e.g. in Ubuntu), be sure to set the working directory to the folder that contains the shell script. It's not smart enough to find its own path."
How do you set up a launcher and set the working directory? Also, I have no idea about the chips in PC's but processing.org says it should run on. Ubuntu Linux 9.04 (on i686 and x86_64). Can i845GV support processing?

When I bought my computer from a friend, he told me that it had 60Gbs in it. Well, when I began to install Ubuntu Linx 9.10 I came to the point of decission of whether or not to delete Windows XP or run Ubuntu 9.10 along with Windows XP. I had a decision to make and I honestly thought I had enough free space to run both. I kept on having problems bringing up Ubuntu. It would go so far and then it would freeze. Well I updated GNOME and I was able to login and try a few things. I of course downloaded and installed the program that I needed to run the program that was running my online radio station. I also downloaded a scanner for to check virusus. I then tried to download some other softwear but I deleted them and kept the scanner and the other program that plays my radio station. Since I did that I logged out and shut down the computer. I haven't been able to get to the point to where I can login again. It freezes. How can I add more memory of free space to run Ubutu. If there is no way of doing that how can I delete Ubuntu and start all over again so that I can again install Ubuntu Linux 9.10 and take off Windows XP so I can run Ubuntu. I really do like the Ubuntu's system. It is so very quick bringing up websites. I have a 32bit download on the CD. I found out the computer was only 16Gbs.

I have an Acer laptop, on which a I have Ubuntu installed with no disk partitioning. I may need to install Windows 7 on this machine but have no desire to stop using Ubuntu for normal use. Is it possible to create a partition to install Windows on, without changing my Ubuntu set up? Also, whilst I'm at it, I'd like to create a third partition for general data storage.
