When I log in to linx and connect to my University's public wifi, it disconnects or if it stays connected, I cannot ping anything or load any webpages. But when loggod in to windows I can write this message now. Signal strength is 28% Can anything be done to still use wifi in linux and not have to log in to windows?

Looks like I am not alone with Wireless issues Through searching and reading today I think the problem lies with the fact that the wireless on/off switch is not working. Under Windows, when I press the wifi toggle switch it starts flashing orange. I haven't managed to get it to do anything under Fedora.

My system hangs within a few minutes after I turn on the Intel Pro/Wireless 2915ABG interface built into my motherboard or if I boot with the interface turned on. I have been having this problem for a couple of years and tried to fix it myself from time to time. (I think that I even asked for help in the Forum once.) In previous version of Ubuntu, the messages just before the hang used to complain about the firmware in the interface being buggy. I intended to send the output from iwconfig and "sudo iwlist eth1 scan" as well. But I can't turn on the interface without hanging the system and thereby destroying this post.
I just upgraded from the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 10.4 to 10.10 over the network using the Update Manager. But when I chose the "About Ubuntu" option from the System menu, I was surprised to see it say that I am running Natty Narwhal 11.4. My system is a Linux Certified LC2464T [URL]
Since I originally started using Ubuntu (10.04) I have had problems with my wireless card. Now I have updated to 10.10 and it has stopped working entirely. I am using a "Dell Vostro 1520" with an "Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300 AGN" wireless card.Here are the details: 10.04
In this distribution version, if I had the wireless switch on my laptop activated at startup my wireless card would refuse to activate. There is a light to show when it is activated and this was off, but I checked anyway and wireless capabilities don't work when it is in this state. It didn't even resolve the problem when I switched it off and on again (although this caused the wireless indicator to blink on for less than a second when switched on).This was manageable because I found two workarounds:
1. Wait until my laptop had logged into Ubuntu, then activate the wireless card which would start and work as it should.
2. If I had already logged into Ubuntu I could put my computer on standby, switch off the card, come out of standby and reactivate the card while Ubuntu was running.As I said, this was completely manageable, and I got used to it. 10.10
Now that I have upgraded to 10.10 all workarounds fail, I can't use a wireless connection in Ubuntu, as my card won't activate, I cant even get the light to blink as I could before. The only way I can use WiFi is by switching to Windows.I tend to use Ubuntu for my university programming work.

I've got a Dell precision with Kubuntu 9.10. Wifi worked fine on that machine for months, but stopped working last week. I don't know what happened, but I recently did an "apt-get dist-upgrade". That might have something to do with it.
When I boot in Windows, wifi works fine.

I'm using a Vaio TT, which seems to use an Intel 5100 WiFi chipset, and a Linksys WRT54G2 (firmwares 1.0.1 and 1.0.4), ubuntus 10.10 and 10.04.
Wifi works fine out of the box. However if the other vaio tt in our office (running windows 7) comes online, my laptop stops being able to make new connections. It WILL stay connected to chat servers, and downloads SOMETIMES continue to work. However all new HTTP requests / ssh connections / rdp connections / pings fail. The laptop still appears to be "connected" to the wifi network.
This may also happen after an undetermined amount of time without the extra vaio. It is not solved by reconnecting or rebooting. Once the extra vaio leaves the building, everything works fine again. This problem does not happen at all if I boot into windows.
I'm dual booting windows 7 64 bit and Ubuntu 10.1 64 bit on my Dell Inspiron 11z with an embedded WiMAX/WiFi Link 6050 series wireless card made from Intel. I only use it for wifi, not 3g or wimax. I installed the latest driver from intellinuxwireless.org, iwlwifi-6050-ucode-41.28.5.1, but it still doesn't seem to work. I ran these terminal commands from another thread:

In the ubuntu help section it tells me to flip a manual wifi switch to enable it, but pressing my windows wifi button, F2, doesn't appear to do anything while in ubuntu. The only experience I have working with linux is typing some terminal commands on my android phone to root it.
I have some serious trouble getting the Wireless connection working, using Fedora 13 on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop which has an Intel Pro Wireless 3945 ABG adapter. I have previously tried an earlier version of Fedora I think it was version 10, where it worked flawlessly out of the box, but all versions since then, simply wont work properly. I got the Fedora 12 64 bit working at some stage, after using hours and hours trying to get it working, and suddenly it did. Don't know what suddenly made it work, since I haven't made any new changes, just re-checked the old ones. But I needed to use Skype which is only in 32 bit, so I had to reinstall to a 32 bit version, and then couldn't get it working again.
I can get it to work with any Windows version, no problems. I have also tried with PCBSD version 7.x, 8.0 and today I tried the new 8.1 just to see if that worked to, an no problemos, it works perfectly out of the box, I could set it up in 5 minutes, even though I don't have any previous knowledge of PCBSD, other than a few short trial installs.
It has to be said that I am a newbee to any Unix/Linux, so I don't know how to troubleshoot properly, and have only tried a few things which I have picked up from other forums. But unfortunately nothing seems to work. The first thing I did after a clean install was I looked in the Fedora 13 documentation, that says I should check that the NetworkManager is controling the interface, I tried to start up NetworkManager but nothing happens, no reaction what so ever. I tried rebooting and then restarting NetworkManager, but no matter what I try, I won't work, not even if I am using the root account.
I noticed right after the install, that there was a choice of connecting to a hidden network in the lower right corner of the screen, but while I have been trying to get the NetworkManager to work, it has suddenly disappeared (I have disabled SSID broadcast on my Linksys router. I've tried to run lsmod and it seems like the right firmware is running, I think it was called IWL3945 or something like that. I think there were around 3 such modules running, plus a Dell module.
Another important note, before I even touched the the WIFI, I connected to the Internet via my normal fixed LAN connection, and installed all the updates that were available and rebooted the system. I am using an LinkSys WAG354G V2 ADSL router, where I have disabled SSID broadcast. Is there a kind soul out there, who has a good idea of what the problem is, or a good idea of how to troubleshoot it ? since a laptop without a WIFI connection is not of much use to me.

Installed ubuntu 9.10 dual boot with win7 yesterday. Everything working but Wifi. Wifi works fine with Win7. No Wifi in Ubuntu. Very confused. I have info from the wifi trouble ticket post.There does not seem to be a driver for this card anywhere.

I just installed Fedora 15 yesterday and can't get wi-fi to work. When I click 'on' on the Wireless label, it goes back to 'off' immediately. When I open the Network Settings menu and disable Airplane mode, the Wireless connection goes on and then off immediately. I took a look at /var/log/messages and it shows this:

I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

I was trying to update the drivers for my wireless card and it no longer works. I have a cisco pcmcia card that I got working to use as a backup, but I would prefer to use my internal card. The card is the Intel Pro 2200BG. Please let me know what information is needed to diagnose and correct this issue. I've recently bought a Dell Latitude E4310 off ebay. Wifi chipset is Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6200 AGN. I'm using Debian 8.2 with Gnome 3 and I've installed firmware-iwlwifi.
Wifi shows up in Gnome upper bar, it correctly scans the networks and seems to connect successfully to my home router but internet doesn't work, it doesn't seem able to load any page.

my bcm 4312 wifi card gets disabled after each reboot, now that ive installed compat-wireless patched for mac 80211 frag attack... in order to get my wifi card fired up again i have to browse tom my compat-wireless source folder in /home/user/Downloads/compat-wireless and issue the commands sudo make wlunload and then reload my wifi driver via sudo modprobe b43. is there any way to fix this problem? or furhter troubleshoot here is what dmesg says on boot:

After a reboot it all loaded and worked fine, just remember to make sure the little light on the f12 button is blue, not red. This guide should work for other laptops and other distros as well (though obviously you'll likely need a different driver file to start off with).
I have an old Toshiba Satellite A30 Notepad. I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto it and everything but WiFi works. I've installed wicd and several other network tools but just can't get Ubuntu to let me use the WiFi connection (the option is greyed out).I know the card works because the last OS (Windows XP) used it without any problems. I have been trying to get my laptop to share its wireless connection to my older, wireless-less, computers through its ethernet port. So far, I have not been able to make it work. As far as I know, what I am trying to do is called network bridging. The method I have been trying so far is to run these commands as root:

im using fedora 10 with gnome on a laptop, i want to increase power to my wifi adapter as im only getting 40% connection strength to the nearest wifi AP (about 20 feet) in windows under power management there is a slider with best performance against battery life, is there a similar setup in fedora 10? ps, if explained fairly well, i dont mind shell scripting (bash) and compiling.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIve been using fedora 11 fora few months now and suddenly today after I booted up fedora network authentication(the little icon that lets me choose wifi networks) isnt showing up in the upper right hand corner which isnt that big of a problem but the fact that its on start up applications and its not wondering is what Im wondering about but on top of that my internet doesnt work at all.It will work for a little bit after boot then die and when I go to network authentication and network manager no wifi networks show up and I have about 5 around my house not including my own which is also what ive been wondering.

I've just converted from Mandriva. With that, I was able to disable the wireless adapter so that it did nothing at all on boot - and only started on my instruction. This made a dramatic difference to battery life! How to achieve this in Ubuntu? The file attached gives all the info about my wireless set-up as it stands.

I have a HP Pavilion dv6-2155dx Entertainment Notebook with Broadcom Wireless Lan Driver.
I didn't want to bother anyone with this, but I just could't find a solution. I was happy using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition, because the wifi was working fine, but I messed everything up dealing with networking in terminal.
So formated and now I have Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition, but that didn't solved my problem at all, because my wifi driver still unfunctional.
Before anything, I tried commands like "dbus restart" and "network restart".
So after reading that I can install by getting ndisgtk and the .inf file, I downloaded the right driver from HP Support's page of my notebook. Extracted the package with Wine (got some error because I wasn't running Win7, of course, but that doesn't matter.).
