Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop With No Monitor?

Feb 11, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I can do remote desktop into the system with a monitor attached but when I reboot the system without a monitor attached I am unable to do remote desktop into it.

I want to use this system as a headless system and only use remote desktop to control it.

So I guess I need to start X and gnome without a monitor attached.

What do I need to do to get this to run?

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Without A Monitor (10.04)?

Jun 20, 2010

I have been trying and trying to get remote desktop to work without using a monitor connected to the server. I have the server set up to where it can be rebooted and everything perfectly fine remotely (as long as it has a monitor). Unfortunately, I need this to be not connected to a monitor-PERIOD. I would think this would be something to be working out of the box, but I guess not.

Ubuntu :: Remote Machine Should Be Third Monitor In Xrandr?

xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1680x1050
xrandr --output VGA-1 --mode 1680x1050
xrandr --output VGA-1 --left-of VGA-0

This gives me dual head. I have a second machine on the same 100mbps network that is also running Ubuntu. I want to run X on that machine and have it's X session as a monitor in xrandr, so I would add something like this :xrandr --output REMOTE-1 --right-of VGA-1Is this possible?

Fedora :: Unable To Set Remote Font Server With XSet

Nov 19, 2009

I recently did a clean install of Fedora 11 (from Fedora 10). In Fedora 9 and 10 I used a remote font server so that I could launch HP OpenView over a VPN tunnel. The procedure would go something like this:

*connect to VPN
*xset +fp tcp/<hp_ux_server>:7000
*ssh -X user@hp_ux_server
*launch OpenView

OpenView requires the fonts that are installed on the HP-UX server, hence the need for the xset command. Now since the installation of Fedora 11, I cannot get the xset command to work.

xset fp+ tcp/<hp_ux_server>:7000
xset: bad font path element (#23), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

I have turned off the firewall to make sure it wasn't blocking the request. But to no avail. I have also had two other people with Fedora 11 machines try this, they get the same error. Were there major changes in the X server from Fedora 10 to 11+?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Bash Script To Monitor Server Load / Mail From Command Line

May 4, 2010

I am attempting to write a very basic script that monitors a server's load and automatically emails an administrator upon the load reaching a certain threshold...

1.) `uptime | awk -F ' ' {'print $10'} | cut -d ',' -f1 | awk -F '.' {'print $1'}` -- the output from this command results in a decimal figure, so when that value is parsed and placed in an if statement, the value is not seen as a number. load-monitor.sh: line 9: [: 4.96: integer expression expected/How can I allow a number like "4.56" to be seen as an actual number within the if statement and be compared to 4, for instance?

2.) I am running a cPanel server on CentOS 5.4 -- when I run mail -s "SUBJECT" $EMAILADDRESS the command just hangs, and stracing the process shows it stuck on a read syscall.

3.) If I wanted to write this script in PHP, I have one primary confusion -- how can I mimic the functionality of obtaining the output from uptime via awk, etc. so that I can determine what the server load is at a given time? Which PHP function(s) would assist in that regard?

Server :: How To Do A Remote Download To Remote Server

May 5, 2011

I have a low powered headless box (DLINK DNS323) running linux that I keep in a back room at home to handle large file downloads. It does not have X installed. Everything is handled at the command prompt through an SSH link. In the most common case, I log in from a remote location (perhaps a coffee shop), start the download, then disconnect and go about my business.

If I try to download from a free account of rapidshare, filesonic, or some another file service there is a manual handshake process (decode a captcha, wait for 60 seconds, etc) that requires a graphical client to complete.

I would like to somehow navigate through the handshake using my laptop (running Firefox) (perhaps through a proxy on the DNS323), but direct the download directly to the DNS323 (i.e., not routed through the laptop) so that I can disconnect and expect that the download will complete without further involvement from me or my laptop.

Is there anyway to direct a download to a remote path? Any other suggestions for solving the problem?
