Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop (VNC) Resolution Without Monitor?

Oct 19, 2010

Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 boots with disconnected monitor with a screen resolution of 1024x786 ... which in fact is great - other distributions won't even boot ...

How can I change this resolution? ... cause I'am operating my system via VNC and preferably set it to something higher.

Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop With No Monitor?

Feb 11, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I can do remote desktop into the system with a monitor attached but when I reboot the system without a monitor attached I am unable to do remote desktop into it.

I want to use this system as a headless system and only use remote desktop to control it.

So I guess I need to start X and gnome without a monitor attached.

What do I need to do to get this to run?

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Without A Monitor (10.04)?

Jun 20, 2010

I have been trying and trying to get remote desktop to work without using a monitor connected to the server. I have the server set up to where it can be rebooted and everything perfectly fine remotely (as long as it has a monitor). Unfortunately, I need this to be not connected to a monitor-PERIOD. I would think this would be something to be working out of the box, but I guess not.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Monitor - Resolution Of The Kde Desktop Is Always The 1024x768

Jun 15, 2010

The monitor is a dell 2009 w (16:10 with around 1680x1050 IIRC) I have a fujitsu desktop with the intel core i5 CPU. the crux is the i5 has an integrated GPU. hwinfo says 'clarkdale integrated graphics controller' and yast tells me the same too, knowing the monitor model as well (with correct resolution) So we have an intel GPU ... but the resolution of the kde desktop is always the 1024x768. sax2 do not accept any other resolutions - he knows only threee, one larger at 1280x1024. But even if i try to turn it on he falls back to 1024x768. this is independed from runlevel 3 or 5. the /etx/X11/xorg.conf knows the monitor and the two modes 1024 and 1680 - but everyhwere else it seems that it is unknown, using default vesa mode... the gfx tools seem to ignore the ability of the higher resolution.

Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop Login To Gdm After Remote Restart

Feb 6, 2011

I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine. There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.

I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sony FP - No Display But Desktop Accessible Via Remote Desktop?

Mar 18, 2010

I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything. However nothing on the TV itself. How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

Ubuntu :: How To Freeze Monitor Resolution

Jul 25, 2011

Just installed 11.04 on a box that it is on a kvm switch. As long as the switch is connecting the monitor to the booting Ubuntu box, the resolution of the monitor is detected OK. However, if for some reason I am working on a different box and the KVM switch is routing K V and M inputs to the other box, then Ubuntu defaults to what seems a botched VGA setting (i.e. it chops off top and left sections of the display). While in this "VGA" mode if I log out and log in, it re-detects the resolution ok.Is there any way to force Ubuntu to use a specific resolution no matter what? In this way, if I am working on a different box while waiting for Ubuntu to load, when I switch the resolution will be OK.I tried the only thing I can think of and this is to set the "good" resolution as "default" for "all" monitors, but it has no effect.

Ubuntu :: Increasing The Monitor Resolution?

Aug 14, 2011

I was playing around with the NVidia settings control panel today and I saw that its Resolution dropdown was giving me options for

1680*1050
1920*1080

My monitor supports up to 1440*900. When I selected one of the higher resolutions, it didn't look very sharp, and the text was somewhat fuzzy and lacked clarity. Was this rendering being done by the graphics card but 'compressed' by the monitor?

The status said 'switched to metamode'. I tried searching but found nothing - what exactly does MetaMode mean? I'm more interested in understanding what was happening, only experimenting with the higher resolutions. What monitor and resolution do you have?

Since earlier versions of Ubuntu did it, this should also, but..

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To Set Monitor Resolution?

Jul 16, 2010

I just switched monitors to a Viewsonic VX2025 and I am unable to get beyond 1280 x 1024 using the nvidia x server settings. My graphics card is a GeForce 5200. These are connected with a DVI plug. I would like to be able to set my resolution to 1920 x 1080. (Also, the card and monitor worked at 1920 x 1080 in a previous windows machine.)

I have done a fair bit of searching and it appears that my issue is either the x configuration file or EDID. After 2 days of working with this it's gotten confusing to say the least. So, I'm looking to see if others have had a similar problem and how to solve it. I have not altered an x config file before, so not exactly sure of where to begin.
