I have installed fedora 13 on my laptop and when I try to update the system using update manager system gives me the following error. code...
View 7 Replies View RelatedHello, i recently update the kernel in fedora through the GUI update manager and after restarting the new kernel wouldn't boot and i had to reboot into the old one. it freezes right after Plymouth finishes and the login screen should show up it just completely freezes, i do have proprietary nvidia drivers could it be that?
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter updating to kernel-2.6.33.6-147.fc13.x86_64 (and updating all kmods) VirtualBox guests no longer boot.
I had a Windows guest (from now on refereed as Crapdows) that worked normally. After the update, I could get to the "Start Windows Normally" screen, but then Crapdows refused to boot. At first, I thought it was a crappy M$ bug, but after creating another VM (Doublecrap), and starting from scratch, I was able to get to the "Windows is loading files" screen, and then the guest hangs again.
This problem is generalized to all OS'es I've tried. In Ubuntu, I can get to the language selection screen before the installation freezes. The same applies for Fedora and SUSE guests.
Is it time to get my hammer?
Using hd3200 on a lenovo edge 13.
followed this guide to install catalyst 10.12 and everything went fine and drivers got loaded.
Just updated the kernel to the latest version(2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64) and after the reboot, the screen is just blank.
I wireless network card is Broadcom Corporation BCM431, but is doesn't work after I update kernel from

Seems like the latest Kernel (2.6.40-4.fc15.i686) update screwed with my setup a little bit.
This is what happened:
I had about 100 updates to my F15 pending in my taskbar's update notifier.
I let the system update itself.
Reboot and desktop effects don't work.
Takes a long time to open up Dolphin.
electricsheep (OpenGL screen saver) doesn't work.
I'm assuming it's a problem with OpenGL or my nvidia video drivers which I tried reinstalling from mjmwired's guide.
That didn't fix anything.
I'm looking for a point in the right direction or a way to revert back to my previous state before the system updated everything.
So this is what happen i was updating the system and electricity went out so i cancel the download and close the update manager..when electricity is back i re-select some of the packages for update everything went fine and when installing the updates one error message is generated saying somthing like it is being used my other something and i click cancel and it says restart the system now or later i restart the system and after some time it says--- ubuntu running in low graphics, nvidia kernel fail to load and there is this OK button but nothing work neither the touchpad nor the keyboard i cannot click ok and continue using ubuntu in low graphic mode also.
i tried recovery mode lots od thing happen but it also stuck after this
Begin: running /scripts/init-bottom
Done
and then it get stuck....
one more thing in the update package there are 2 x-server packages...

Today I downloaded an update (can't remember which ones they were exactly) and afterwards I was told I needed to restart my computer. But once this happened I couldn't even get to the GRUB menu. before the grub menu was supposed to appear I got this error message
"error: no such device: /ubuntu/disks/root.disk" and
"error: no such device: /ubuntu/install/boot/grub/grub.cfg"
afterwards I get to some command line version of grub where I can type in commands like "reboot" but i don't have my old menu where I just selected the kernel I wanted. I have a dual boot with Wubi if that makes any difference. Does anybody have a way I can recover my copy of Ubuntu, or will I need to reinstall?
Update manager reported some updates including kernel update to version 2.6.31-19.
after update system won't boot. it crashes into bash shell. I've manually loaded kernel version 16 with following command code...
same thing happened when version 17 came up. I definitely NEVER again going to update kernel. What do I need to do now? should I uninstall latest kernel...if that is possible?
At some point in the last week, my webcam on 10.10 64bit mysteriously stopped working. The OS no longer recognises it as being there. It's an internal cam on a Clevo laptop and before this it's always worked perfectly.
Is there a way I can force the OS to recognise it? Or find out what broke it and fix it?
I am a newbie in Linux and have only been recently using it. I have faced a problem with my the firefox browser launch. Recently there was a update (to generic version 2.6.32.24) after which the browser fails to start. It gives the message starting Firefox web browser and then dies off. I tried searching for some already posted answers but couldn't find much.

I can't update or download software.
After the bunch of updates with current, my custom kernel (2.6.33) can't boot.
The error is:
/sbin/e2fsck: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda6
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate
superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
The /dev/sda6 is ext4 and is ok since it can boot with official huge smp kernel 2.6.33.
My custom kernel can boot before this bunch of updates in current.
What i missing in kernel?
I just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.
I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.
Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.
So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.
What options should I use when I'm using the sort command to sort the top 5 CPU processes (ps -eo user, pid, ppid,%cpu,%mem, fname | sort ??? | head -5) showing max to min usage?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs, and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix. For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:
if sort-sequence = "descending" then
'sort -t~" -f +3.0f -4.0 +5.0r -6.0 -f '
else
'sort -t~" +3.0f -4.0 +1.0f -2.0 -f'
I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.
I tried a number of times to install dual boot with Win2k. I keep getting errors at the stage of setting up the partition for the install. When I try to choose ext4 it says Fedora cannot be installed on a bootable drive, fix the problem. I don't see how to fix it...it does not say what to do or change.
I have had other linux installed in the same partition without a problem. What gives?
150GB drive for both OS's Separate drive for data, not involved in the install.

I recently installed GTK-Recordmydesktop to record my desktop, and it doesn't play correctly in Totem. So I installed VLC. It won't open at all no matter how many times I click it. I tried in a Terminal, I got this code...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just come around to KDE4, and I'm still getting used to it. I still don't like the new Kickoff menu, so I switched to the classic style. How the fartmonkey do I tell K to always sort the entries in the launcher menu alphabetically? Right now they seem to be in some random order that I can't even decipher. This is going to keep driving me mad until I figure out how to sort the stupid menus!
