Server :: Frequent Broken Pipes From SSH Connection After Power Loss?
Apr 19, 2011
I have three machines networked to my desktop which run a bunch of simulations in parallel. As they're running, I connect to them via SSH and screen to keep an eye on the runs and look at the output. They stay usually connected for days at a time. The SSH servers and client are running Fedora 14. Yesterday one of my coworkers accidentally yanked the plug on one of the servers while it was running. When I powered it up again, I started getting some odd connection problems. I couldn't connect to it via SSH initially because I got the Remote Host Identification Changed (RSA host key changed) error. I deleted the key in .ssh/known_hosts, which allowed me to connect, but it denied my password. I then logged into that machine locally, restarted sshd, and removed .ssh/known_hosts again. Now I can log in via SSH without problems. However, the connection dies with a "Write failed: Broken pipe" error every few minutes (as opposed to the other two machines, which stay connected indefinitely).
So my questions are:
1.) why would a power loss affect the behavior of the SSH server?
2.) why do I keep getting broken pipes now?

I have been having this problem for about two weeks now where Debian's network and internet connection randomly fails. It works perfectly fine and hosts all the services I need for a while, and then without warning all network connectivity fails. I can't ping any other network device. Regardless of how much I try to fix it, the only thing that works is restarting the computer. First, the server went 7 days without a problem; then 5 days; now it lasted 2 days. Judging from my Teamspeak server logs, it crashed today at 12:31. I grep'd through my log files and found this information:

I run a Laptop (Mint 17.1), which is connected to a Debian 8.1 server over a LAN. The systems are connected through a router. Both of them show no problems when working independently and when doing work on the internet. Also, ping works fine (no lost packets, no delays!) from Debian to Mint. However when doing a ping from the Laptop (Mint) to the Debian server, I experience frequent packet losses and timeouts. In fact, a "first" ping may lose the first 20 to 30 "tries". Thereafter, if I repeat pings immediately and quickly one after the other, they might in geral not lose packages or show delays. Ping to and from the router also works perfectly in either direction!
Of course, functions such as ssh or samba-sharing are hampered as well by this behaviour. Also, if I DO in fact manage to connect to the Debian server via ssh, my console (KDE 14) is freuqently "locked" (i.e. - doesn't show my input for a while) but in the end DOES show the characters entered and gets processed o.k. (eg. when doing an "ls"-command). Both systems are at the latest software-level and I just finished installing Debian 8.1. The situation was the same on Debian Wheezy, however.

Today, I was upgrading my desktop from Jaunty to Karmic (a little behind schedule, I know). All packages downloaded successfully, and then the computer began the process of applying all of the updates. During this period, at some point, it lost power. Now, of course, it won't boot.
Fortunately, I have a separate /home/ partition, and it was unmounted during the upgrade process. So, my personal data and settings are fine. But the OS is useless.
I'm guessing that I'm completely buggered here, and there is nothing that I can do except re-format the Ubuntu partition and clean install Karmic from an install disk.

I'm wondering what my alternatives are when I lose power to the external hard drive where I have Debian installed. I realize that the best answer may be a battery backup UPS for the external hard drive. It seems that I recall that when a similar scenario happened on my SunOS Sparc workstation, I would simply hit [Stop-A] and then type in the "sync" command. I now have a laptop and am running Debian off of an external harddrive that has its own power supply. When I lose power, my laptop obviously continues to keep running but my session is essentially and understandably hosed because the main filesystem is not accessible. Gnome desktop goes away and I am thrown to the main console login. When power resumes, I cannot login to attempt a remount or anything. When I hit [ctrl-alt-del] thinking that that is less forceful than just holding down the main power on the laptop, I get cannot execute "/sbin/shutdown". Is there a [STOP-A] sync equilavent or some way or keyboard sequence to get to GRUB to issue a reboot command?

recommend any utilities that would check the hard drive and its contents (if they are still good) following a power outage?

After a power outage my external hard drive that I use to serve a DLNA server with content lost all the files.
The parent directories are still displayed, but there is nothing inside them, and I cannot write anything into them. (creating any file in them does not work.)
I assume that I have a corrupted drive but I was hoping to find a way to recover the content. Most of it is backed up, but I have become a bit lazy in the past month, and have not backed up so there are a number of videos I don't want to lose.
It seams odd that the directories show up, but the files don't. The drive properties also show that the correct amount of the drive space is taken up (for the videos to be present) so I haven't reformatted because I assume that will wipe out all traces of the data.

I have observed a problem twice now with Apache trying to restart but hanging somewhere in the process. This happens after a power failure; the machine comes back just fine, but not the web server. The machine is on a UPS, but occasionally it runs out of "juice" before someone can get to it (we have a generator for emergencies). When this happens, a ps indicates about three processes running that are trying to start Apache, but they just sit there - this time for three days since the power failure was on a Friday. I can fix this by killing those processes and doing an Apache restart - but that takes human intervention, which is not acceptable.
I suspect this may have to do with SSL, since when I do a manual restart it asks me for the SSL password. There must be some way around this so the system can recover on its own. This system's web site runs under SSL since it maintains medical information that must by law be protected. But it also could be life-threatening to someone if the system can't come back and as a result a person can't get help.
So I would appreciate some guidance as to what I could change that would allow for system recovery without intervention. I'm happy to provide any configuration file info, if you tell me where to look.

I am attempting to write a server application in C on a linux machine which listens for TCP connections and transfers data. I am trying to detecton the server side when the connection is broken. The closest thing that I got to work was looking at the return value from sending data. For example the servers job is to mainly read data from the socket but to test if the connection is still up the server sends data periodically back to the client. I look at the return value from send() to determine if the connection is broken e.g.
Code:int ret = send(session->clientSocket, &data[sentCnt], count - sentCnt, MSG_NOSIGNAL)I found that this does not immediately return an error when the connection is broken. The reason for this is because even though the connection is broken send() is still successful because it is able to put it on the network buffer. To fix the issue I did the following things;
Code:
//set send timeout
struct timeval timeout;

I logged on to one of my servers and ran a yum update, while the update was in progress my SSH connection got disconnected.
I logged in through a new connection when connectivity was restored and looked at running processes. It looked like yum was hung so I killed it (big mistake and one I won't repeat).
Now, when I try and run yum, I get the following:
Quote:
yum update: There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was:
Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly.
It's possible that the above module doesn't match the current version of Python, which is:
If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to the yum faq at:[url]
I have tried hunting around for the correct version of libelf without much luck.
Is there anything I can do to get yum working again?
The server is running Centos 5.2

I have a new Toshiba Satellite L450, and decided to run Ubuntu, which is new to me. I am running a 64 bit Karmic, and there is no driver that works. So, to make a long story short: a friend helped me get a driver on my Desktop, namely: rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0100.1012.2009_64bit.tar.gz We had it working, but when I let in the first large batch up updates, it kicked the driver out. I found instructions, installed it again. I let in the next updates, and it kicked out again, and this time the instructions don't work. So, I have two sets of questions:
1. Will updates always undo my wireless? Are there certain updates I should avoid if I want the wireless to stay up and running? (I just assumed the thing to do is just get the updates -- though I am guilty of having no idea what they were about.)
2. Did the updates cause one of my instrucitons to no longer work, or need to be modified?
They were as follows:
sudo apt-get install build-essential
cd ~/Desktop
sudo tar -xvzf rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0100.1012.2009_64bit.tar.gz
That 'sudo tar -xvzf...' operation is the one that stops me. Is there something to change in that line? It goes on:
cd rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0100.1012.2009_64bit
[Code]...
this worked the first time I tried it. I posted this earlier under 'hardware', and do not know how to get that post off, so I typed it here once I realized.

Loss of internet connection after upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 Like the title says, I lost my internet connection after upgrading my Ubuntu system from 8.04 to 8.10.I used the downloaded automated method. It appeared to work fine on its initial reboot into 8.10. But I noticed the internet icon indicated loss of connection. Even so, I was still able to browse the net through Firefox. But then when I rebooted the next day the opposite was true: the connection icon indicated connection, but Firefox would not actually connect, nor would update manager. It has been like this since. This is a dual boot machine, and the Windows XP Pro side still connects to the internet as usual, no problems. So how can I make my new 8.10 system connect to the internet?
I use a Motorola SB4200 cable modem

For most of today I had my internet connection dropping out on me intermittently. I assumed it was a provider issue, as it has been unreliable in the past. After it dropped out for good, and I could not print through network, I realised it was not a provider issue. All the other computers in the house were connected, including another ubuntu box. Only the MacBook Pro 5,5 was not able to connect. The network manager indicated I was connected to the network, throughout the whole time.
A number of restarts with the kernel I normally use (2.6.31-19) including one in recovery mode, yielded no change, but a restart with the 2.6.31-20 kernel resulted in connectivity. Finally, perhaps by chance, wireless started to work again on the 2.6.31-19 kernel, after I once booted into the Mac OS, and then back into Karmic. How I might go about diagnosing, obviously in hindsight, what happened? I suppose I should look in the log files, but I have no idea where exactly, and what to look for.

I experience X crashes on a frequent level. First it happened with the current stable nvidia 180 driver, and the nonfree flash player (....., vimeo, etc). I replaced the stable nvidia driver with the 180-dev driver which fixed the flash problem. However it still happens that the X chashes without any reason or pattern. One time it crashed the moment I wanted to save a PDF file to my HDD downloading it with Firefox, another time it crashed while idling. I use an Alienware M15x with a nvidia 260M. Compiz is installed and active. Which other data or logs do you need?

Does your icon have code that that I can use or can I find the file somewhere and create a link? Alsa mixer works ok and nothing is muted and I have sound so as to play music. The Internet connection and the power connection icons also don't appear.

I am having issues with Gnome Power Manager. My wife and I have identical computers, with Linux Mint 8 installed on both. My Linux Mint 8 is a fresh install, whereas her's was an upgrade. Anyway, when I click suspend or hibernate nothing happens, not even an error. On my wife's computer this works just fine. sudo pm-hibernate, sudo pm-suspend, and sudo /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh do absolutely nothing.

I'm building a replacement postfix email server and I'm getting intermittant loss of sent emails; where: sometimes mail ends up at the recipient (a hotmail address) and sometimes not. Having an offsite relay (or posting directly to the internet) doesnt help either. (Although using hotmail itself as a relay always works despite logged complaints about unchecked ssl certs) Most dissapointingly the log files for the smtp transations are the same for successfully received emails as for the "lost" emails.

Linux printing appeared to be working fine up until yesterday. Today typing lpq gives the following: lpq Printer 'sdst@other.domain' - cannot open connection - Connection timed out Make sure LPD server is running on the server
The /etc/cups/printers.conf file is properly set, the printers appear in localhost:631 and they are printing test pages. However, all command line print commands seem to be trying to print to sdst@other.domain I don't know why printers.conf is being ignored and why and how sdst@other.domain was added. Seems like it might have been auto-discovered?
# dit: sdst@other.domain was mentioned in /usr/local/etc/lpd.conf I'm not sure why lpd.conf is being used instead of /etc/cups/printers.conf

Dell Precision Workstation running Suse 11.1 & KDE 3.5 as default O/S, with Suse 11.3 KDE4, Ubuntu 10.04 & Win XP Pro as secondary O/S's.Medion PC with Win XP Pro for those windows apps I have to use (against better judgement but because my clients require it!)
On Friday 6th I was having a play with Apache2 running on the Dell Precision on Suse 11.1. I have had a local development webserver for some time to test websites before uploading them a host server. I had wanted to test the DHCP & DNS functions for some time, and this seemed like a good opportunity. But I ran into some problems and decided to un-install the DHCP & DNS. I intended to install a VM and re-install the Apache server on it, to make it easier to troubleshoot.Unfortunately my internet connection on that box is now broken, but only with the Suse 11.1 install. The other 3 O/S's all work fine, and the rest of my machines are all good. In fact the Suse 11.1 install can communicate across the LAN, and print to both the network printers, it just won't connect to the Internet. Turning off the firewall doesn't do anything, and reconfiguring the NIC in YaST doesn't help.
I suspect that there is a config file somewhere with faulty info, but I can't find it. If searched everything that was changed on that date.I have been searching this forum, LinuxQuestions forums, and Googling for 2 days with no real success. I found some interesting threads which I thought would help but so far no luck. I can ping all the interfaces on my LAN, but anything outside is blocked. I thought it might be in the BT HomeHub but that works fine and all the boxes can connect except with the Precision running 11.1.
