Ubuntu :: Using PS3 To Create Thumbdrive Boot?

My computer will not boot up and I have no boot disc. I believe the hdd may have failed. I am able to connect to the internet using my Playstation 3 but it will only let me download files directly to a thumbdrive. Everything I've seen so far needs a computer to extract the files to the thumbdrive which I can't do. Is there any place that I can download a linux distro directly to my usb drive without any intermediate steps?

General :: Thumbdrive Installs Work A Few Times Then Password Changes/can't Log In - Distro

Jan 12, 2011

I've tried to do the installs using Unetbootin, LiveUSBcreator, and Startup Disk creator and the Install program from within the distros themselves, regardless of installation method the same problem returns. So I do not think the problem is related to method of installation.

Maybe it's hardware? I've tried a total of four different motherboards, (an MSI, 2 Gigabyte and an Asus) all with updated BIOS, all 4 of which work perfectly fine with normal Linux installations to the HD. I have no troubles running any of the above distros when installed to a hard drive.

The problem comes when I install to a thumb drive. Which thumb drive? Take your pick. I've used Sony, SanDisk, Kingston and a handful of cheaper brands in sizes from 2G up to 16G. The problem always returns regardless of the hardware involved. Therefore I do not think the problem is related to hardware.

I want a fully functioning installation of Linux on a thumbdrive. (I do not simply want a Live CD copied to a thumbdrive.) This will allow me to make changes to the software/settings and have those changes remain after rebooting. I'm able to do this just fine, and everything works perfectly until the third, fourth, or fifth reboot. At this point I enter my password and my password is no longer accepted. Sometimes the screen flickers a little, sometimes it just reloads the prompt. But it doesn't let me in. At this point it's Game Over. All the hard work installing and tailoring the install is down the drain. Yes, I've searched and found threads of this similar problem. Many of them go back to 2005 or 2006. The vast majority of them are people begging for help, receiving a few suggestions, finding no resolution and then the thread just dies. Honestly I've spent many, many hours following outdated advice that has, on occasion, worked, but only temporarily. The problem always returns. Something is seriously screwed up and I can't be alone.

So here I sit with a brand new 4Gb Sandisk that up until last night had a beautifully running Ubuntu 10.10 installation. And yet, voila, my password is now no longer good enough. It simply will not let me log on. I enter it, hit enter, and the log-in screen simply reloads itself.

Debian Hardware :: HDD Not Recognized In BIOS But Recognized Upon Boot

Sep 18, 2014

I have a backup HDD with a different distro for my laptop and i can boot into it via external usb or if swapped into the laptop. This HDD/install in question is debian testing and was working fine, the issue arose suddenly. I was first suspecting a failure of hardware somewhere on the motherboard, but the hdd i was using with an external usb adapter also works when installed into the machine. also, the HDD is recognized once i have booted using the external HDD and distro, but it is not recognized by the bios. so i dunno, my first guess is something became corrupt within the testing install, but i guess its also possible that there is some wrong with the HDD but thats not immediately apparent as all the data is still accessible.

Should also note that the HDD with testing on it is also recognized when connected via the external usb adapter, while booted from alternative distro/HDD.

Also. just tried this, but i can get the testing HDD/disto to boot if connected externally. it was going pretty quick, but there i did catch a line about a corrupt filesystem. any commands to run to see what might be going on?? log files to look at?

Fedora :: Devices Recognized In F11 But Not Printing

Jun 12, 2009

After the usual mild annoyances inseparable from a Fedora release (installation from the LiveCD worked OK, but generated a requirement for 162MB of day-one updates, followed by something like 150MB of downloads to install OpenOffice - which comes as standard with Ubuntu/Mint/Mandriva and, no doubt, many other distros) I have been able to get the system working reasonably well. If there are major performance gains from the use of ext4, I have been unable to detect them. However, the only really frustrating issue from my perspective has been the difficulty in getting my two printers (both of which worked straight out of the box in the other distros mentioned above) to actually print. The devices in question are a Brother 2140 laser printer and an HP 2280 multi-function inkjet.

Both of these devices were properly recognised by the system, but neither would actually print (there were some initial signs that action was imminent, but no result - the printing processes were finally shown as having been stopped). I removed both printers, and started from scratch. The laser printer could not be persuaded to work, either with the recommended 2170 driver or the old faithful 2060-gutenprint driver. However, when I tried to add the HP, the printer utility advised that I needed to install "hpijs" before proceeding. This I duly did, and the HP 2280 then worked fine. On the basis that my only aim was to get the printers working, I decided to ignore the recommended drivers for the Brother 2140, and select the "2060-hpijs" version. This worked fine, and others may like to try this workaround.

Fedora Networking :: ZTE USB Modem Not Being Recognized?

Nov 20, 2009

I have installed the KDE spin and am liking it so far. Except for the fact that I cannot get onto the internet. I rely on this ZTE USB wireless modem for internet and that just would not get recognized in Fedora. Plus, my Windows installation is down and I would love to keep it that way if at all possible.

I have followed a few instructions on this particular problem. I have modified the menu.lst file to account for the usbmodserial and product. The usb_modeswitch program has also been installed and the usb_modeswitch.conf file has been edited with the values I got from the 'lsusb' command's output.

But the curious thing is that when I actually execute the usb_modeswitch command, I get a message saying that there are no drivers for the ZTE device. Which means that I cannot go onto the wvdialconf part of it at all. Basically at this point I dont have a modem, according to Fedora. But it does get recognized as a ZTE device. That tells me that there is something right about what I have done so far and may only need to do a few tweaks here and there.

PS - I am based out of India and this is a Tata Indicom Photon (NOT Photon Plus) connection for which I have a USB device which acts as a modem.

Fedora :: Openoffice Installed But Not Recognized

Oct 29, 2010

I have openoffice installed but when I click on .odt or any other file types associated with it, it opens the archive manager. For now, I have added the application using "soffice" which will open it. But I have to right click every time I open it, which I don't like, and is a little bit embarrassing when I show off my system to those poor prisoners of microsoft.

I had a hayell of a time getting it installed! I used the software manager which finally worked. But it never put any menu shortcuts in the applications menu, so I had to go on an easter egg hunt to actually find this "soffice" thing, which actually only opens up the general Open Office project manager. In short, what I need is for Open Office files to open with Open Office.

Fedora :: Drive Partition Not Recognized At Boot?

Jan 1, 2010

I have a weird problem with an sata partition. This drive is onle volume of an md raid set, and has one partition filling the whole drive. of type "fd" ( linux raid autodetect). When my machine boots, the drive containing this partition is present as /dev/sdc. However, the partition is not - there is no /dev/sdc1. If I look at the partition table in fdisk, all appears to be fine. If I do anything that causes the partition table to be rescanned (such as writing in fdisk, or running partprobe, ... ), the partition shows up fine at that point and all data is present and when I assemble the RAID using it, its in sync. This drive is attached to the same (motherboard) controller as my other drives which have their partitions recognized just fine.
