After upgrading from Fedora 12 ot Fedora 13 I now get this message when mounting a FAT32 partition in /etc/fstab: mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat' Does not Fedora recognized FAT32 partitions anymore ? Am I missing a package which adds 'vfat' filesystem support ? This worked without problems in Fedora 12 and the upgrade to Fedora 13 from a Fedora 13 installation DVD ran without problems or errors.

1. vfat 100GB
2. ext3 remainder
Both were formatted when I created them with qtparted. Windows 7 sees them, and says they are healthy, but does not recognize the vfat partition. Is it too big, perhaps? Short of moving everything off the vfat partition and recreating it with W7, how do I fix it? I think W7 uses some sort of extended fat32 now?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
I am running Fedora 14 with kernel 2.6.35.74 x86_64 and I am having an issue with a Vfat partition that is shared with Windows 7 on a dual boot setup. this partition contains my mozilla profiles and it occasionally mounts as read only in Fedora. I wont be able to write to it and root doesnt seem to be able to write to it when this happens. I checked this by trying to redirect an output of ifconfig. My fstab entry looks like this.

These two (fstab and ls -l) always look the same whether the partition behaves as read only or not.
Does anyone know if there's a way to create an ext4 image on top of a vfat volume? I know how to create a disk image file and mount it on the loopback device, but a vfat volume allows a max file size of 4 GB so is there a way to make a spanning disk image?For example you'd have disk1.img through disk3.img where each one is 4 GB, but when mounted via loopback it would appear as one complete 12 GB ext4 volume. Is this possible?

I've tried to CHOWN and CHGRP the mount point of /media/SHARED (its location), but that doesn't work. I should include the reason in case you have other suggestions that are alternative to changing ownership on the mounted VFAT drive:
In my old Fedora 9, I ran Eudora under Wine. The program lived on my VFAT partition. I could hence run Eudora under both Windows and Fedora, which was really nice - even though I hardly boot into Windows anymore. While I did notice the username and group name were the same as they are under Fedora 14 fstab mounting - daemon - it still worked without a hitch. To note, the partition was also automounted in Fedora 9 in fstab.I just upgraded to Fedora 14. When I automount the drive through fstab, Eudora will not launch. Yet when I manually mounted the drive (and I noticed that the username and group are my local username, not daemon), Eudora launches fine. So while my solution, mounting the drive manually when Fedora 14 starts, does in fact work, it is a bit of a pain. Luckily I don't reboot too often!
In any case, I wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions. Maybe it's just a mounting syntax issue; but as for mounting syntax in fstab, I used the same line as my F9 fstab.The line I used was: /dev/sda3 /media/SHARED vfat umask=0000,dmask=0000,uid=0002,gid=users,users 0 0

Under both Windows and Fedora 11, my USB flash drive was mounted using the volume label of "RBR Astro". Under Fedora 12, it now gets mounted as "RBR ASTRO". I like my old case. It's a small nuisance, but it also ended up breaking all my links to files/directories that I store on flash. How can I get the flash to mount while preserving case?

The first one(from a debian home/somedir directory worked perfectly) but the second one not. This second directory is a hard disk partionned on fat32(vfat in my /etc/fstab file).

I partitioned my drive to dual boot with XP, and I also added in a fat32 partition so both Windows and Linux can read/write to there to share files. I now have a problem with permissions (I know that fat32/vfat does not support permissions.) I can as my normal user read/write to this partition, but I want to set-up a CodeBlocks project on there and this is where I run into my permissions error.I can create it and the .cbp file is there ect. but I can not save any work, it will complain ('could not write', or sometimes with 'maybe this drive is write protected'.) I have a backup HDD with a different distro for my laptop and i can boot into it via external usb or if swapped into the laptop. This HDD/install in question is debian testing and was working fine, the issue arose suddenly. I was first suspecting a failure of hardware somewhere on the motherboard, but the hdd i was using with an external usb adapter also works when installed into the machine. also, the HDD is recognized once i have booted using the external HDD and distro, but it is not recognized by the bios. so i dunno, my first guess is something became corrupt within the testing install, but i guess its also possible that there is some wrong with the HDD but thats not immediately apparent as all the data is still accessible.
Should also note that the HDD with testing on it is also recognized when connected via the external usb adapter, while booted from alternative distro/HDD.
Also. just tried this, but i can get the testing HDD/disto to boot if connected externally. it was going pretty quick, but there i did catch a line about a corrupt filesystem. any commands to run to see what might be going on?? log files to look at?
When I try to boot to OpenSUSE I get the following error during boot-up: unknown filesystem type 'reiserfs' could not mount root filesystem - exiting to /bin/sh$
This only started happening quite recently - before this I could boot to Linux quite happily.
I am trying to mount a file image, like this

But I get the following:

I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:

I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.
First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.
Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04. The drive was formatted when I installed so it's 100% Ubuntu. The only major problem I have encountered is that Ubuntu will not recognize my SD cards. I really need to access these cards, all my film footage is on there. I think the internal SD card reader (If such a thing exists) would have been deleted during the installation process. I am a greenthumb to Ubuntu and have never used it before so I am rather stuck...
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.
View 5 Replies View RelatedDebian 8.2 .... Desktop is lxde BTW. It auto-mounts the drive, and sometimes it's writeable for a while, but then it all goes read-only out of the blue. su doesn't work. I tried installing autofs and it doesn't mount at all.

I'm not an lxde fan. The file manager always was crashy. But I'm on an Acer Aspire, and too many desktop managers just can't deal with the screen ratio.

But if fstab says mount /dev/sdb1 at /video it becomes owned by root and wont let root change owners. even if fstab says rw,user i still cant mount or unmount /dev/sdb1 at /video

How to mount vfat partition automatically after boot? After login it it will mount all vfat partition and the icon of those parition will be at desktop. How can it be done. udisks is installed. If i click a vfat partition from pcmanfm it prompts for password to mount.I don't want to click. It will be automatically mounted and i will get the icon of that mounted vfat partition at desktop

I originally had it partitioned as NTFS but I realized that my Xbox 360 will only mount VFAT filesystems. I believe that I partitioned it correctly with yast. However I am still having trouble mounting it. Below is the output of fdisk, mount and dmesg.

I just discovered that automounting a fat32 partition (which i keep for exchanging file between Ubuntu & Win) slows down my boot time, from around 25secs to 1 minute. It does not behave in the same way for a ntfs partition (the vista partition itself).

I have a vfat partition under RedHat RHEL5 that I currently must mount manualy after each boot. I would like it to auto-mount but I cannot find a way to do this without it becoming ro except for root. My other partitions auto-mount just fine. I have tried the vfat as a separate partition and as a VLM logical drive (as it currently is).
The fstab statement:
"/dev/VolGroup00/LogVolDos /dos vfat noauto,users 0 0"
allows me to mount it as a user. The statement:
"/dev/VolGroup00/LogVolDos /dos vfat defaults 1 2"
is what I use for other VLM partitions, but for the vfat it seems to only allow root access. Manually mount this partition is OK, it's just that I have sometimes forgotten and then it is not included in backups. What do I need to do to make the vfat auto-mount as accessible for a user?

I did not find the solution to my problem reading other posts so I apologize in advance if this question has been solved in a previous thread.I recently started having input/output errors when trying to access directories on my external HD. Today I moved the content of my external HD to a single directory before starting a backup. Since then I can not access this backup directory anymore although the external HD automatically mounts when I turn it on.
I tried my luck starting the external HD in Windows but it wont show up in the explorer. What should I do to be able to mount it in windows and is there any way this would fix the problem?I'm running xubuntu kernel v 2.6.27-14-generic and the external HD is an acomdata.

I am trying to format 4 GB sd memory using mkfs.vfat. I want to use the card both in linux and windows so I am formatting with Vfat filesystem. When I format the card from command line with "mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/mmcblk1" I am getting a warning message like
"unable to get drive geometry, using default 255/63" but the data in the card is erased.
But when I mount the card and checks for the size using df -h its showing 1 GB instead of 4 GB. how to format the SD memory card or any other alternate way to format the card.
