I'm using 11.4 KDE x86-64 on my Dell Laitude D620 laptop,I plug in my Corsair Voyager thumbdrive,it show the pop-up notice that an usb drive has plugged in,and showing option, but when I open it,it doesn't open, said that 'cannot open this usb device'.This thumbdrive is formatted into NTFS under Ubuntu 10.10 Disk Utilities, works well under Ubuntu,Debian & Windows OS,but not in 11.4.
Output of lsusb when the drive is plugged in :

I've tried to do the installs using Unetbootin, LiveUSBcreator, and Startup Disk creator and the Install program from within the distros themselves, regardless of installation method the same problem returns. So I do not think the problem is related to method of installation.
Maybe it's hardware? I've tried a total of four different motherboards, (an MSI, 2 Gigabyte and an Asus) all with updated BIOS, all 4 of which work perfectly fine with normal Linux installations to the HD. I have no troubles running any of the above distros when installed to a hard drive.
The problem comes when I install to a thumb drive. Which thumb drive? Take your pick. I've used Sony, SanDisk, Kingston and a handful of cheaper brands in sizes from 2G up to 16G. The problem always returns regardless of the hardware involved. Therefore I do not think the problem is related to hardware.
I want a fully functioning installation of Linux on a thumbdrive. (I do not simply want a Live CD copied to a thumbdrive.) This will allow me to make changes to the software/settings and have those changes remain after rebooting. I'm able to do this just fine, and everything works perfectly until the third, fourth, or fifth reboot. At this point I enter my password and my password is no longer accepted. Sometimes the screen flickers a little, sometimes it just reloads the prompt. But it doesn't let me in. At this point it's Game Over. All the hard work installing and tailoring the install is down the drain. Yes, I've searched and found threads of this similar problem. Many of them go back to 2005 or 2006. The vast majority of them are people begging for help, receiving a few suggestions, finding no resolution and then the thread just dies. Honestly I've spent many, many hours following outdated advice that has, on occasion, worked, but only temporarily. The problem always returns. Something is seriously screwed up and I can't be alone.
So here I sit with a brand new 4Gb Sandisk that up until last night had a beautifully running Ubuntu 10.10 installation. And yet, voila, my password is now no longer good enough. It simply will not let me log on. I enter it, hit enter, and the log-in screen simply reloads itself.

I am trying create a dual boot of Ubuntu and Windows 7 on my new 60 gig Corsair SSD drive. Windows 7 installs without a problem but when I try to install Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 it will not detect my SSD drive during the installer or when I start Ubuntu off the CD/USB. So I downloaded 10.04 and it will see the SSD drive but once it start copying files it gives me this error: " [Errno 30] Read-only file system: '/target/bin'." I have tried may different downloads of 10.10 and 10.04 along with many different burned disks burned at the slowest speeds. I have tried it many times off different flash drives with different downloaded isos.
I did MD5 test my iso and it was fine, I burned the disk at 8x using OSX 10.6 disk utility, and checked the CD before pressing install and came back with no errors. I ran a check on my RAM and it passed with no errors. I tired the alternate ubuntu 10.4.1 installer, hangs when installing the base system at 17% when extracting libacl1... Then I get the error "The debootstrap program exited with an error (return value 1). Check /var/log/syslog or see virtual console 4 for the details." This CD was burned at 8x, MD5 is okay, and CD had no errors. Windows 7 was able to see my SSD and fully install to it. My system is a custom built and here are it's specs AsRock mobo (I had an ASUS but it fried so instead of buying a good mobo I got a temp till I can upgrade)
AMD 5200+ AM2
2 gigs Corsair XMS ram DDR2
BFG Nvidia 8800 GTS 6XX of memory (I cannot remember off the top of my head)
ASUS sata DVD burner
Corsair Force Series 60GB SSD

is this a good combination to use with 8 GB of RAM and 2.6 GHz AMD Hex core? The power supply will be replacing a 450 watt power supply and the video card will be replacing an ATI 5750 1 GB (Which currently doesn't work without 10.9, so far) The problem with these is that it doesn't meet the AMP rating of 38A of the GTX 470.

I have made a startup USB from an Ubuntu LiveCD already, but I was wondering how I might take a high-capacity thumb drive and install a number of different boot disks on it, from an Ubuntu LiveCD to a bootable floppy, and choose one at startup of the disk, kind of like Grub?

trying to create a "local network" by directly connecting an IBM Thinkpad with Debian Linux installed on it to an Alix computer running Voyager Linux. I'm following a "how to" I found to create a music server, hence the requirement. My issue is I can't get a static IP address to be configured on the Debian machine.I've trawled the net and have found the instructions about editing the /etc/network/interfaces and have tried to do this. First I tried to get DHCP working so I could connect the Debian machine to the net and this proved successful. I edited the interfaces file to look as follows:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
Then I tried adding a static IP address to the machine. As this is a network purely between two machines I made up the IP addres and used 192.168.0.1 and used a NetMask calculator to give me a NetMask of 255.255.255.254 (I told the calculator there would be 2 machines on the network). I then edited the interfaces file as follows:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
[code]....
I re-booted the machine (ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0 keeps saying that eth0 hasn't been configured - a problem there that I don't understand), but during boot up time it failed to assign the Static IP address to eth0 and made me go into SU mode. To fix it I simply replaced the interface file with the static IP inputs with the file that had the DHCP entries (I'd made a copy of the DHCP file), and re-started the machine. Everthing came up fine. So the first question is how do I get a static IP address to be assigned to eth0 such that whenever I shut down and restart the machine the static IP address is always loaded?
The second question is around creating the network via the cross over cable. From what I've found via Google, all I should have to do is create a static IP address on the Debian machine and a static IP address on the Voyager machine. Once they're connected by the cross over cable they should see each other. Is that correct, or do I have to do anything else?

Configuration:
Centos 5.4
2 Corsair F80 RAID 0 Intel Storage Matrix
ASUS P6x58D-E
Stripe Size = 128kB
Tried to run Centos 5.5 in Dual Boot Configuration with Windows 7. Windows Y installed without issues within minutes (amazing performance with the SSD's). Installed Centos 5.4 several things that wouldn't work right:
- wouldn't recognize the NTFS partitions. So I decided just to install Centos on the box. Completed installation and rebooted but it wouldn't boot up after the installation. Even in NON RAID configuration it would not boot of the SSD. Replaced SSD's with 2 Seagate Barracuda's 1TB in RAID 0 configuration and all went well.

My computer will not boot up and I have no boot disc. I believe the hdd may have failed. I am able to connect to the internet using my Playstation 3 but it will only let me download files directly to a thumbdrive. Everything I've seen so far needs a computer to extract the files to the thumbdrive which I can't do. Is there any place that I can download a linux distro directly to my usb drive without any intermediate steps?

Can anyone suggest a good free Virtualization Software Package that work on OpenSuse with the KDE Desktop, as I need to use Windows for some applications that have not got a Linux equivelant, Namely Reserch In Motions BlackBerry Desktop Manager and the drivers for my Printer and Scanner, so I would also need something with USB pass through. Or if there isn't any free virtualization software that will dowat I want that's free then something that is not expensive that's paid for. I like the look of Parallels Desktop 4 for Windows & Linux but I'm not sure if I would be able to justify paying 54.99 for the ammount of use that it will get?

I successfully installed OpenSUSE on a 4gb pen drive using the instructions contained within this portal. However, for the life of me I can't figure out why the persistent feature doesn't work.
Here's my partition table map:
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

I installed opensuse 11.2 64-bit edition. I installed all of the software I wanted.I now want to clone the installation to 6 other workstations that are 100% identical to the first.I used clonezilla to create the image, but all of the new workstations will not boot. This is due to the fact of the fstab being 100% cloned and other boot volume problems.Does anyone know of a good, easy way to clone opensuse 11.2 that will work?

I upgraded to OpenSuse 11.2 and just about the only thing that doesn't work is my wireless internet. From my research, I should be using the iwl4965 or iwlwifi driver; however my system seems to be running iwlagn. I have no idea how to switch it as neither of the correct drivers can be found in my yast, and I've failed to find any information about this on the Intel® Wireless WiFi Link drivers for Linux* website.

I have vnc running, but I can't change the startup script to use a different desktop manager. I can't tell if it has anything to do with it being TightVNC or not. I can't find information regarding VNC (which I want) and guides are cryptic/don't work 100%.
I'd like to set the default to KDE and log in via internet which I can do via url. Unfortunately, I'm not exprienced with remoting in as well VNC is enabled and config script is listed below.
