Fedora :: Totem Plays Video Too Fast Since Kernel .40?
Aug 7, 2011Since kernel update 2.6.40 Totem plays video like in Fast Forward (no sound). Reverting to 2.6.38 solves the problem.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Plays In WMP But Not In VLC / Totem Or MPlayer
Feb 10, 2010My partner is a teacher and has downloaded some videos from a teacher's resource site but can't seem to play them in Ubuntu. They play fine in Windows XP using Windows Media Player but they only play a few seconds in VLC or Totem and then freeze. The files in question seem to be normal MPG (MPEG-1) video files but somehow VLC and Totem choke on them. I have installed all restricted video formats including w32codecs but still no joy. My partner is threatening to go back to Windows!

Oct 21, 2010I recently tried out recordMyDesktop (not the GTK+ frontend, just the CLI program, I wanted to Keep It Simple this time ), and found that the videos it records/encodes show massive motion-smearing artifacts when played back. This is without the "--on-the-fly-encoding" option; with it, the video looks fine (i.e. has no artifacts other than the typical ones found in any compressed video), but it plays back too quickly (the time-step between frames is too high, thus making everything go too fast when the video is played back, even though the frame rate is low). Here's a screenshot of the video playing, showing what the artifacts look like (they're nasty!).
I've searched Google and LQ about this problem to no avail: either there were no relevant results, or it was just a post on a different forum asking basically the same question, but with no answer. So apparently this problem is either really rare, or it's something specific to my configuration, and mine alone (highly unlikely).
System specs:
CPU: Intel� Core� i5 430M @ 2.27 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce� 310M w/ 512 MiB VRAM
RAM: 4 GiB

I've tried different options, such as --quick-subsampling, as well as tweaking the video quality and bitrate settings (--v_quality and --v_bitrate), all of which did nothing to change/get rid of the artifacts.

Jul 25, 2010SM player works yes, but how do i get the thumbnail previews. I did a fresh install of opensuse, i installed the updates they Yast told me to. I followed the guide precisely this time, using the command line method and encountered some problems. 4 files, asked to be broken or use obsolete at the point where i have to do the switch to packman repository. I chose use obsolete cuz i didn't want to break anything. When i tried to set an mkv to open in SMplayer the optionw asn't there, only banshee and totem. I opened Yast and it told me to install opensuse codec installer and another file can't remember) which i did. The option to open files in SMplayer, Xine etc came up then.
I'd like to get the thumbnails and I'd like to see Totem work as well. I know i don't need to, but considering that i downloaded the neccesary codecs, i expect it to work :/ or am i wrong with that assumption On a totally unrelated note, is there a way to increase the resolution of the bootloader? i'd like to be 1920x1200 to full my screen

Oct 14, 2010I am having some problems with recording with my laptop. When I try to record something through the laptops mic, usb webcam mic or with desktop recorders audio record feature all playback is too fast (sounds a bit like alvin and the chipmunks :L ) Is anybody else having this problem, or even better know how to fix it ?
Sorry if this has been asked before, I'm running 10.10 and had never tried recording before I upgraded to 10.04. I had the same problem in 10.04 though.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Totem Won't Play Wmv Or Plays With No Sound?
May 31, 2010I'm on Kubuntu 9.10, using Totem to play .wmv files, and certain of them cause the player to search for an audio codec (wmap?) that is never found. The video played without audio after that. So I followed advice to remove ~/.gstreamer-0.10, and reboot. A new .gstreamer-0.10 directory appeared, but now, Totem will not even play the video. It recognizes the audio codec however. The video codec shows up as "Windows Media..." but resolution is 0 x 0, and nothing ever appears in the window. I tried uninstalling and re-installing w32codecs and non-free-codecs, and removing the registry files under ~/gstreamer-0.10 and using gst-inspect to rebuild the database,
but nothing helps.

Jun 23, 2010I'm having a really random intermittent fault with video files... all kinds... and also happens with different media players... they lock up the entire system but when i reboot they'll play fine...could this be the graphics card? it's a Sparkle Nvidia Geforce 9500.... is there any reccomendations for a suitable replacement that doesn't cost the earth... I'm looking at starting 3D animation too, so was looking to upgrade anyway...there was some kind of error that randomly popped up once or twice when it was playing files...

May 30, 2011this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

Mar 1, 2011I have recently swapped over to debian (KDE 32bit) from linux mint, however vlc only plays audio, no video (This is for .avi's, .wmv's and rtsp streams, probably others but that what i have available to try). I've installed debian multimedia and dragon player will play .avi's fine, though crashes with .wmv's .

Mar 7, 2010I was setting up my Totem Movie Player on Ubuntu 9.10 and at first it wouldn't play dvds at all. So, I went online and entered these two commands into the terminal to play restricted dvds.
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
DVDs will now play on Totem, but now I don't have any video. I can hear sound and if click around the screen I can get it to play but I still don't have any video. I also tried both dvd drives on my computer and tried different DVDs. Still same thing.

Fedora :: "choppy" H.264 / AVC Video Playback In Totem
Jan 23, 2011When I play H.264 / AVC videos from my new camera in totem, the sound plays fine but the video looks like a slide show. I also tried it in xine, the video plays better, but the audio does not play. (the video seems to play in slow motion. the files are saved as *.mp4, and are the same resolution as the *.mp4 files from my old camera which play fine in totem. When I look at the properties of the files, the new ones say that the codec is H.264 / AVC and the ones from my old camera say that the codec is MPEG-4 video. the frame rate is the same for both files.

Ubuntu :: Video Playback Very Fast With Gtk-recordmydesktop
Aug 28, 2010I've been hunting around for some screen capture software in Ubuntu, for future screencasts and out of the handful I've tried I've gone with gtk-recordmydesktop. After initial problems with recording quality, I have managed to get everything working but have noticed that on playback of any captured video, is played back at a crazy speed, the frame rate is not the issue as it is on the default 15 FPS setting but still the play back is very fast.
I noticed before my tweaking that playback was normal speed, but the quality was garbage, and I found that this was because of Compiz being enabled, and I have to run gtk-recordmydesktop with "Encode on the fly" and "Full shots at every frame" enabled in order for the video playback to not be all cut up, however ever since encoding on the fly has been enabled, this has caused playback to be hilariously fast.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with Compiz enabled. With an nVidia GPU (8200 M)
