My partner is a teacher and has downloaded some videos from a teacher's resource site but can't seem to play them in Ubuntu. They play fine in Windows XP using Windows Media Player but they only play a few seconds in VLC or Totem and then freeze. The files in question seem to be normal MPG (MPEG-1) video files but somehow VLC and Totem choke on them. I have installed all restricted video formats including w32codecs but still no joy. My partner is threatening to go back to Windows!

I have 9.04 and I recently "got" a 13.2GB 1080p HD movie. When I try to play it, it's choppy and mosaic like. The audio plays fine, but the video jumps and I can't get a clean picture except for maybe 15% of the time. I have to hold down the spacebar so it plays and pauses very quickly for the video to even proceed. I've updates VLC and Movie Player and I've downloaded many codecs and I can't seem to fix it.EDIT: I can play it in Movie Player without the pixel/mosaic-like effect, but it too is extremely choppy.

I just installed Lucid Lynx RC 1 on my MSI Wind U100 netbook. When I tried to play a video on it I was informed of a lack of codecs, so I downloaded my video player of choice: VLC media player. When I tried to play the video, there was audio but the screen was black. The same thing happened when I downloaded to codecs and used the stock video application.

i want to connect two videos into one. let's take two videos from videos as an example. i want my final video to have the height = height of first video + height of second video and width = max(width of first video, width of second video). in the upper part the first video is played whereas in the lower part the second video is played.
do you know how to do it under linux, the best possibility while using mencoder, ffmpeg or any other command line command?

I was setting up my Totem Movie Player on Ubuntu 9.10 and at first it wouldn't play dvds at all. So, I went online and entered these two commands into the terminal to play restricted dvds.
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
DVDs will now play on Totem, but now I don't have any video. I can hear sound and if click around the screen I can get it to play but I still don't have any video. I also tried both dvd drives on my computer and tried different DVDs. Still same thing.

I'm having a really random intermittent fault with video files... all kinds... and also happens with different media players... they lock up the entire system but when i reboot they'll play fine...could this be the graphics card? it's a Sparkle Nvidia Geforce 9500.... is there any reccomendations for a suitable replacement that doesn't cost the earth... I'm looking at starting 3D animation too, so was looking to upgrade anyway...there was some kind of error that randomly popped up once or twice when it was playing files...

I recently tried out recordMyDesktop (not the GTK+ frontend, just the CLI program, I wanted to Keep It Simple this time ), and found that the videos it records/encodes show massive motion-smearing artifacts when played back. This is without the "--on-the-fly-encoding" option; with it, the video looks fine (i.e. has no artifacts other than the typical ones found in any compressed video), but it plays back too quickly (the time-step between frames is too high, thus making everything go too fast when the video is played back, even though the frame rate is low). Here's a screenshot of the video playing, showing what the artifacts look like (they're nasty!).
I've searched Google and LQ about this problem to no avail: either there were no relevant results, or it was just a post on a different forum asking basically the same question, but with no answer. So apparently this problem is either really rare, or it's something specific to my configuration, and mine alone (highly unlikely).
System specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 430M @ 2.27 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 310M w/ 512 MiB VRAM
RAM: 4 GiB
Command used to record:
Code:
recordmydesktop --fps 30 --no-sound --no-frame --overwrite -o /home/mrcode/Videos/capture.ogv
I've tried different options, such as --quick-subsampling, as well as tweaking the video quality and bitrate settings (--v_quality and --v_bitrate), all of which did nothing to change/get rid of the artifacts.

Essentially, what I am attempting to do is set up an older PC with a Radeon 9600 video card chipset in it with xubuntu 9.10. I would like to attach this PC to my rear projection tv (Sony KP-48S75) via an S-video cable and use this TV as the primary and only monitor for the system. At one point, I had Ubuntu 8.04 hacked onto this same hardware fulfilling this role decently. However, due to some carelessness on my part, the system became unstable and I decided to start anew (random crashes, lots of X freezes, dependency issues, screwing too much with my sources.list and so on). So, that said, I installed Xubuntu 9.10 on the PC and had it hooked up to both an LCD monitor and the TV via S-video. Upon boot, both outputs worked, though X only rendered on the LCD and not the TV. Thus, I dug and researched and found that by putting a bunch of xrandr commands into my gdm start script I could finagle the TV into displaying my output, mostly.
The commands I used to get the S-video out work (and, therefore, pasted into my /etc/gdm/Init/Default script) follow:
Code:
xrandr --output S-video --set load_detection 1
xrandr --output S-video --set tv_standard ntsc
xrandr --output S-video --set tv_horizontal_position -2
xrandr --addmode S-video 800x600
xrandr --output S-video --mode 800x600
xrandr --output S-video --rate 60
xrandr --output VGA-0 --off
You'll notice I do a few things in those commands. First, I set load_detection to 1 in hopes of enabling automatic S-video connection detection (this isn't working). The next interesting bit is my commanding the horizontal position. The reason I had to do this is, because, upon getting the S-video output to render, the picture rendered to the right-hand side of the screen, deprecating the furthermost bits (for instance, I cannot see the shutdown icon in the upper right hand corner). Setting the horizontal position to -2 allowed me to shift the display to the left a bit, but, to my surprise, the right hand side still deprecates and I am just left with a black column on the right hand side.
Question 2 has to do with the screen indexing. If I run a xrandr command with no options, I see VGA-0 indexed as Screen 0. I also see the S-video listed as disabled (even though I see it rendering on the TV right in front of me). Finally, I notice that, under the VGA-0 section, there is a screen size listed, as well as several resolution modes with many parameters following them (like 800x600 72.2*+ 75.0 .... some other stuff). However, under the S-video section all I see is one mode with one small bit after it (800x600 72.2*). This smacks of suspicion to me and makes me think it might be related to the right side of my screen being deprecated. My wager is that I need to tweak some modelines in the S-video output so that it is more in sync.
However, I do not know the syntax for modeline editing and, since the S-video screen isn't even detected, I am not sure I really can edit these options. Does anyone know why my S-video output would continue to be listed as disabled even when its running? Furthermore, can anyone tell me why no screen index is given to the S-video output (I only see screen 0 attached to VGA-0, no screen 1 for S-video)? I think I need the screen indexed properly in order to use the xvattr command later in order to allow xv overlays to function on the proper screen. Finally, I do have a xorg.conf file loaded in /etc/X11 that is mostly hacked together stuff I used trying to get this to work in the first place. Would this conflict with the xrandr setup? Which options override which?

I can't play video on any player (vlc, mplayer, totem), the files open, sound works, but video is black. I suspect something went wrong when I upgraded to VLC 1.1.4 using a ppa, I've read that the ffmpeg can screw up and then video just stops. Trying to play m4v, mkv, avi, none work.
Not sure what to do, reinstalling seems like a hassle. Already tried removing vlc and the new ppa, tried removing ffmpeg and reinstalling, removing ubuntu-restricted-extras.

-The Mkv video file cannot be opened by the Mplayer due to something that I don't know. I try to open it via the gnome-terminal and end up with something like this:
The, I try to play it with VLC media player. Everthing seems fine but after few minutes, I can see the lagging of the video and distractions on the screen.
Then, I've open my Windows 7 and play the mkv files with the KMplayer, everything is fine. No lagging, no distractions.
I've already updated the ubuntu-restricted-extras. I've already installed the libxine1-ffmpeg and nothings good appeared.
I've already installed the mkvtoolnix-gui (which is i don't know what is it) but similar prob appear.
how did play mkv files? With no lags or disctractions?

I am trying to get a listing of video information using ffmpeg or mplayer. I have found a way BUT it is only returning 1 piece of info..
Here is what I'm doing in PHP:
print exec("/usr/local/bin/mplayer -identify file.flv -ao null -vo null -frames 0 2>/dev/null | grep ^ID_");
But this will not provide an entire listing, it will only print out 1 thing such as:
ID_AUDIO_CODEC=mp3
I can specify what exactly I want to know something like:
print exec("/usr/local/bin/mplayer -identify file.flv -ao null -vo null -frames 0 2>/dev/null | grep ^ID_VIDEO_WIDTH");
but I want to just have all the info available at once instead of having to loop through like 20 times..

I'm just curious if anybody knows how to change the default settings in gnome-mplayer from it using video0 as the video input (which is my built-in webcam), to say video1 (which is my external usb tv tuner). There is no gui option for this.
My issue is not being able to use it for analog video, though it's not a huge deal because I figured out the same very thing for tvtime (video0 to video1). It'd just be another option.
